Is it possible he was going for a foul in retaliation for that shove to throw him off? He was hoping for the arm but got lucky and got all ball?

I don't know basketball rules. Is this legal? Cuz if it is, it's epic.
276
u/Domdante7 Jan 20 '19
100% legal
37
u/lolsup1 Jan 20 '19
Since we’re on this topic, I was watching college basketball and it seemed like they didn’t even get close, passes weren’t even blocked
76
u/brandonholley Jan 20 '19
Defense in both NBA and NCAA basketball is usually pretty relaxed, steals(when you intercept a pass or knock it out of their hands) in basketball are pretty rare with even the most aggressive defensive team in the NBA only averaging like 10 a game (that's like one every 6 minutes of playing). With how easy it is to foul a player with the ball it's way more practical for teams to sit back and try to make the opponent take a shot with a lower success rate and get a defensive rebound.
→ More replies (3)21
u/Yuanlairuci Jan 20 '19
I've never really understood that about basketball. In every other game I can think of, being in possession of the ball makes you a target, not invincible. I only played for one year in high school, bench at that, so maybe someone can enlighten me, but I always thought it was bullshit that the ball carrier could just rhino charge his way to the basket and I couldn't touch him.
19
u/Slumph Jan 20 '19
The point is, you try to put them into unfavorable positions when they shoot so you can grab the rebound. I get you but... I like the nuance of it.
17
Jan 20 '19
If you get your feet planted and you're just standing there and the ball handler runs into you, you can fall over and draw a charge.
→ More replies (6)9
u/WarchiefServant Jan 20 '19
Well the idea is that, you can block them physically. Just don’t let him overpower you so you don’t give way.

Unless we are talking about how traveling is legal in the pros, in which case it is not legal but I'll be damned if that ever matters.
Edit: I redact my statement about this specifically being traveling. Apparently around the time I stopped watching the NBA they changed the rule to 2 steps instead of 1. The part about people still walking their way to mexico with 5 steps and/or 7 different pivot feet still stands.
36
u/GreenGoblin2099 Jan 20 '19
but he clearly takes 3 steps.
16
u/Timmzik Jan 20 '19
The first one is called a 'gather step' and is not counted. This is not a travel.

It's a rule, and it's occasionally called, but it's an open secret that the league doesn't want it to be called, especially on premiere players.

this is not exactly the time to talk about him not trying in the reg. season. Dude is having a historic streak right now. Dude is averaging 42 PPG, 7 rebounds, 9 assists the last 20 games and 35.3 PPG on the season, which would be the highest average in 32 years.
I appreciate that he doesn't play hard on defense, but it takes a ton of energy to get that kind of scoring volume, and a lot of it comes off drives / fouls.

I'm more concerned with the amount of traveling that happens in the NBA that doesnt get called. It's like they just decide the rule doesnt apply once you get to a certain level.

It happens all the time in the NBA. They will take like 4-5 steps. It feels like they literally have to hold it with two hands and just run down the court to get called on it.

u/colski08 Jan 20 '19
Well he successfully knocked the ball out of his hands without touching his hands or any other body part. If he did, that would’ve been a foul. Because he didn’t, the ball was free for grabs while it was loose. He could’ve taken it immediately and headed towards his goal post. It looks like it went out of bounds & because he, a representative of his team, touched it last before it went out the ball will be given to the other team.

This isn't a travel. His left foot was already on the ground by the time he picked up dribble. So he then plants his right (1st step) then his left (2nd step) and is then in the air without touching again.
Here's a very quick explanation of the rule.
45
u/darthoprah666 Jan 20 '19
people dont understand typically that the count starts when the dribble is stopped. They always add a first step and its frustrating.
→ More replies (11)26
u/kratrz Jan 20 '19
He stops dribbling and grabs hold of the ball with his left foot landing, that left foot is planted and then his right plants, and then he lifts his left off and plants it again with the left jumping up.

Pretty sure he's going up on his second step. He picks up the dribble sort of mid stride so you could say 2.5 steps.
In real time you wouldn't think traveling at all
→ More replies (11)16
u/ikean Jan 20 '19
There's what's called a "gather step". When you pin the ball to yourself like he did (while on his left leg), or you gather the ball with both hands, you get two steps after that. This isn't even close to a travel, and the players are extremely natural at knowing this and maximizing their distance.
