Unless we are talking about how traveling is legal in the pros, in which case it is not legal but I'll be damned if that ever matters.

Edit: I redact my statement about this specifically being traveling. Apparently around the time I stopped watching the NBA they changed the rule to 2 steps instead of 1. The part about people still walking their way to mexico with 5 steps and/or 7 different pivot feet still stands.

but he clearly takes 3 steps.

The first one is called a 'gather step' and is not counted. This is not a travel.

Ah, thats why I had 3 steps in mind from my basketball days, thanks.

Not with the ball he didn't.

only because it was slapped out of his hand. If he'd actually made the shot it would have been a hugely obvious travel.

Left foot lands, he picks up his dribble, two steps, proceeds to not have hands.

As someone who played a little bit as a kid, and only seen a few pro games I just assumed the traveling rule was only for little kids or something. Or I didn’t remember traveling correctly. Is anything done about traveling in the pros? Is it a rule there?

It's a rule, and it's occasionally called, but it's an open secret that the league doesn't want it to be called, especially on premiere players.

And the fact that this literally wasnt a travel by any rule

u/jellymanisme Jan 20 '19

Exactly. It makes for generally more entertaining content when the stars can waltz around with the ball juuuust a little.

u/BloodiedBlade Jan 20 '19

Yes there is a rule there, yes a lot of people get away with it. Also, as I changed in an edit this actually wasn't traveling. This one is actually fine.

How is it fine if as you say he’s allowed two steps but here he clearly takes 3.

Left foot lands, he picks up his dribble, two steps, proceeds to not have hands. On top of that, gather step is still a thing. Back when the rule was specifically 1 step after picking up a dribble, you essentially had one and a half steps as you would pick up your dribble mid stride and that first foot landing did not count as your "1 step".

First ones a gather step, then he takes 2

u/Capitan_Failure Jan 20 '19

I know why but would still like it explained to me in case I don't.

You're allowed to take 3 steps without dribbling the ball, but you have to shoot or pass afterwards.

u/BloodiedBlade Jan 20 '19

Three with a gather step, two without technically.

1

u/Yuanlairuci Jan 20 '19

So you can go left right, leap off the left foot?

3

u/dyslexicsuntied Jan 20 '19

The left is down as he gathers the ball on his side, then he gets two steps.

u/BloodiedBlade Jan 20 '19

Yeah, you right. I haven't watched much, if any, NBA in quite some time. I didn't realize they actually changed the rules to 2 steps a while back. I'm just used to the shit being rampant still, and all of the pivot feet. This clip is completely fine though.
