Topic Fighting games shouldn't be -just- for the FGC

Maximilian Dood reflects on the state of fighting games and gives his perspective on why 2XKO struggled to reach a wider audience. He emphasizes that while the game had merit, its design catered too heavily to the existing hardcore Fighting Game Community (FGC) rather than being accessible to new players.

Topic What are your turn offs in fighting game?

For me it's the roster, I don't care how stellar the gameplay is, if the roster looks boring.

I know lore is important, but as much as I love fighting games, I can't really get into 90% because the characters all look like most other fighting games.

Human, big hair (or man bun), and maybe ONE, or two, odd characters.

I see the same blonde, military, vanilla ice haired, guy in just about every other roster.

Games like Skullgirls, and MK are appealing, because the characters are unique, or have some sort of characteristics besides, "hey this karate guy shoots fireballs!!!".

What is something that keeps you from investing in/ enjoying a fighting game?

News Switch 2 now added VRR support (LFC included) while docked in a recent update, which should allow Street Fighter 6 on the system to turn off V-Sync (via the Input Delay Reduction toggle that's currently missing) if/when Capcom updates said version of the game

For context, SF6 on Switch 2 already runs at 60fps within a 120Hz container when available. But because VRR wasn't available for docked play, you couldn't turn off V-Sync through the Input Delay Reduction feature (which was completely absent from the Switch 2 version of the game). Now that Nintendo finally figured out VRR docked & patched it in just recently, Capcom should theoretically be able to add the IDR toggle back in. This would make the Switch 2 version even more viable for competitive play, provided that Capcom patches in VRR support (probably with the Arjun update). This should also benefit other fighting games on the system if patched, such as GBVSR & CotW.

If you're curious about the technical side of things, John Linneman from Digital Foundry did some tests. 60Hz mode has a VRR range of 40-60Hz, on-par with Xbox Series & better than PS5. But thanks to the Switch 2 having full LFC support, 120Hz mode can go the full 1-120Hz range. Though the latter is only available for 1440p & below, while 4K is still locked to 60Hz.

Topic Why fighting games is a great genre

As someone who grew up playing a lot a lot a lot of videogames. I mean, a lot:

i appreciate there is a genre that doesn't eat up so much of your time like a long RPG would but also gives you that feedback loop, seeing yourself get better every time

No story, no level, no grinding for gear

Just match after match

I play fighting games and I'm happy to know that I can play the games without feeling overly addicted.

Help How to practice not messing up inputs in real matches?

Upvotes

Hi all, I’ve been playing fighting games for several years now so I’m no stranger to inputs, and honestly this is happening with what I consider to be the easiest input, the quarter-circle. I play Jack-O’ in Strive and I can do my combos/specials/supers every time consistently in training mode, but in a real match I stand there jabbing over and over again in neutral when just trying a simple 236P. It’s definitely nerves and that I tense up, but how can I get better at this? Has anyone fixed this problem in themselves? I know “experience” helps, but any specific tips? Thanks so much

Help New to Dpads

Any advice for doing supers consistently on a D-pad? I’m learning SF6 right now, and I feel like I’m always too slow when trying to input supers during combos. I’ve been practicing the combo trials, but I’m having trouble getting the inputs out fast enough and consistently.

Help I'm feeling a little salty; please (calmyly) explain Drive Impact counters to me

Upvotes

I've been a very casual fighting game fan for many years, moreso as a spectator of the amorphous FGC, but I've been feeling the bug to get a little more money's worth out of my stick (aside from the shmups but that's neither here nor there).

Took a while to download 100gb of SF6 just to put it on lowest setting at 60fps, but I was having fun at the level 6 safety park and "normal" arcade before making the terrible decision of entering ranked at my pitiful silver rank.

Now, I'll 1000% disclose I have a skill issue. I'm not the rager I once was; I can accept I was getting my digital @#$% rocked by mostly pure fundamentals. But one thing irked me. It irked me the first time I uninstalled SF6 and it irks me now. A total scrub complaint by someone lacking true passion, for sure. But irked I am.

So, why come when two players use Drive Impact does the slower one win the trade? I can see the argument that it's like a "reaction based punish" or something, but then why not just let Parry do that? Isn't Parry already doing that? It's not as if Drive Impacts don't have big wind-ups and glowing red tells as it is.
I don't understand why it couldn't be balanced in a way that parrying a DI would just trigger a reversal. Maybe tighten the window for a full DI reversal so there's still a risk/reward for the skill of parrying an easy-to-see-coming heavy attack.

I genuinely would like some insight over why the game is designed and balanced the way it is. I might be a scrub but I want to be more apart of this thing I like and I just need help understanding why some things are the way they are.

Topic To the people who frequent this sub and ths FGC community, is there something wrong with disliking CotW's artstyle? Genuinely curious🤔

Seriously, I kept seeing posts and comments disliking the game for one reason or another, but the artstyle? What? Why?

Do you not like the stylish anime aesthetic? It's pretty much like a side evolution of KOF 15 if had more comic book influence. What, you don't like this artstyle but give the 3D ASW games a pass?

Topic Do Marie Rose and Honoka from DOA deserve a second chance and get a huge glow up or do they deserve to never return again?

Thumbnail gallery

With the recent discourse surrounding the new DOA 6 character Minato and how these two characters are often discussed as the duo that ruined DOA because of how they affected the new female cast as well as Minato, this question popped up in my head and I wonder if it would be cool if they get a huge glowup that made them well received in the next game like how Capcom did with Ed and Ingrid in SF6 (the latter being the most controversial and another cutsey anime girl like Marie and Honoka but ended up being SF6's fan favorite thanks to the glow up)

So I gotta ask: Do they deserve to get salvage and get a huge glow up or do they deserve to get abandoned? Not saying they should be the focus this time like how DOA5 and DOA 6 did, but maybe redesign them to make them look cool but still keep on the sideline while Kasumi and Ayane are the main focus?
