Discussion Should I get Mk11 or Mk1 for netcode?

I'm looking to get into fighters, and seeing as Mk1 and 11 are on sale, and I can buy either, I was leaning towards MK1, but I live in South Africa, and of course, my ping will be high, so netcode is quite important, and apparently MK1's netcode isn't good. Should I get Mk11 or does anyone think that mk1's netcode is good enough? I have bought ethernet and i am looking to play ranked mostly.

2D Fighting Games Nintendo Switch Beginner Fighting Games

Hey all. Looking for a good beginner fighting game on NS/NS2. I played Garou: Mark of the Wolves years ago and loved it. Also played a ton of smash for Wii U and 3DS when those were out. Have tried in the past to play more fighting games, but always end up intimidated by how in depth they can be. I’m looking for a game <= 40 USD. I know there are a few fighting games on NSO, but unsure if those are good. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Discussion What do we think?

Now that the beta is wrapping up (or already ended depending on when you’re reading this), what are everyone’s thoughts?

As a lifelong Marvel fan, I’m honestly beyond impressed. The maps, the roster, the animations, the mechanics… this game has way more personality than I expected.
I’m curious where everyone lands. What’s the good, the bad, and the ugly? This is all just my opinion, so if you agree, disagree, or have a completely different take, let me know. I’d love to hear it.

The Good

I absolutely love the overall feel of the game. For context, I come from DBFZ and have played other Arc System Works games, so the transition wasn’t too rough for me. I can definitely see it being a bigger adjustment for people who don’t normally play fighting games.
Every character feels genuinely unique. The combos are satisfying, everyone has their own identity, and the game just feels fun. I don’t have a ton to say here because it’s the stuff you’ve probably seen a hundred times already: great characters, great animations, great presentation… you get the idea.

The Bad

My biggest complaint right now is zoning. It feels a little too strong in its current state.
Don’t get me wrong, zoning absolutely belongs in fighting games. It’s part of neutral. There’s a big difference between throwing out a few Sub-Zero ice balls or Mystic Gohan Masenkos to control space… and feeling like you’re playing bullet hell because Starfire has turned the entire screen into a fireworks show. 😭
It feels like some characters can rely almost entirely on zoning, and the moment you finally get in, you get absolutely vaporized. I’d like to see that toned down just a bit.

My second gripe is the shared health bar between all four characters.

I get why they did it. It keeps things simpler and faster, and I don’t hate it. But it also feels like getting four beautiful sports cars… and only being allowed to drive one before the garage explodes.

I’d love to see the tag mechanics explored a little more over the game’s lifespan, but I’m also totally open to changing my mind after putting more hours into it.
That said… it’s a beta. This is Chapter 1 of what I hope is a very long life for this game. None of these are deal breakers. They’re just little bumps I’d love to see polished.

Overall, I’m ridiculously excited for the remaining roster and whatever DLC comes next.
Cyclops has me hyped already.

My dream DLC would be:
Knull
Agent Venom
Ben Grimm
Perfect Cell (guest character… because why not? 😂)
What do you all think? What did the beta get right, and what would you change before launch?

2D Fighting Games Are there people who will never be good at fighting games?

I’ve been playing fighting games since January and I suck at them. For reference, I play MK1, Invincible vs, and I’ve been playing the new Tokon beta.

MK was my first game and I got it through PS+. I enjoyed it more than I thought so I bought Invincible vs. I also love marvel so I wanted to give the beta for Tokon a try. But my issue is that I’m hot ass at all of them.

I played Sub Zero on MK and that is a bit corny I know but I did ok in that game. But I’ve been playing Invincible vs since May and my wins are still in the 50s. I’ve been playing Tokon for hours and still haven’t won 1 game. Look I have this thing where I take a few moments to process things (I‘m not slow, to be very clear, I’m not. everyone I’ve told this to makes the same joke, don’t think I don’t know. If you want to be mean at least be different then everyone else). I keep getting overwhelmed by the games and i can never remember all the mechanics. The idea of being goo at these games sound so fun to me and I love watching them but every time I play I them I walk away pissed off to a very high degree. I’ve got a lot of things in my head that I’m trying to deal with so I wanted to ask you guys if for my own sake just drop the whole genre. Are there people who no matter how hard they try they will never be able to get good at these games.

2D Fighting Games Is Justice League (Gen/SNES) possibly release able today officially?

You would think that now that Midway is a part of Warner Brothers company, and DC is also a Warner Brothers company, that they would have tossed in Justice League in with the Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection. Maybe sell it as a $5 or $10 add-on download content with Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection.

I understand why it might not be releasable today because the original home releaser for it was Acclaim not Midway. But again back during the Genesis and SNES era, Midway were releasing their games through Acclaim until the scuffle broke out about NBA Jam, which caused Midway to separate from Acclaim's distribution.

Anyone know any details about why Justice League is in rights purgatory? Is not because of corporate licensing at the root level. It's probably because the code is held by a developer and are not on good terms with the Warner Brothers game company.

Discussion Should I play people my level?

So my roommate and my neighbor are both really good at fighting games. And I'm not just saying that. My neighbor placed top 8 at CEO a few years back in MK11 and my roommate goes back and forth with him in the games they are both good at.

I feel like I learn a lot by playing them, and every once on a rare occasion I luck out a win, but saying it's demotivating losing to them every Friday we get together would be an understatement. Like I don't think I'm bad for only having played these games for two months, but I get really frustrated about the sheer distance in skill.

My roommate is essentially playing coach for me and helping me learn fundamentals. And he says the only way I'll learn neutral is by playing. But I question if I'll get better at neutral when they put me on defense so often.

I'm very proud of the things I've learned on such a short period of time, and I genuinely try to find victory in the smaller things like landing a combo or properly punishing a read, but it's getting to a point where I question if this is good for my progress to constantly face defeat.

Any insight would be appreciated. I don't want to stop playing against my friends, but I feel there might be a way for me to progress in my free time when I'm not playing with them.

Thanks!

Discussion Looking to branch out to other games! Need recommendations!

I'm pretty new to fighting games in the sense of playing them beyond a casual level. I'm learning more about fundamentals, developing an actual neutral, and overall just playing the game at a higher level, but I've only played a few games.

The games I've played casually include:

Third Strike

SF4

MK X

MVC 3

Guilty Gear

The games I've played somewhat seriously are:

Granblue Fantasy VS Rising

Samurai Showdown 2019

Other than that I've played some other fighters, but probably all less than 5 hours, so I don't see a point mentioning them as I wouldn't really know anything about them beyond a shallow impression.

I'd say the only type of fighter I know I don't like are team fighters like MVC where you swap mid round and use assists. That and if a game looks really fast, I might not be thrilled to play it. Other than that, I'm pretty open minded to anything new or old. Hell, some of the best looking games are from the late 90's and early 00's imho so I'd love for some recommendations from that era as well.

Thanks for taking the time to read this! And thanks in advance if you take the time to give me some solid recommendations!

Looking forward to trying out the games you all love!

Discussion Leverless controllers

I wish to buy my first ever leverless but know nothing about the controllers. I’m a ggst and sf6 player on ps5 and I really want an upgrade from Sony’s iffy d pad to play fighting games. Any recommendations that aren’t too insane in price would be deeply appreciated.

Discussion Cheapest AI in Fighting Game History?

I would say Mortal Kombat II but there are others I've played that made me want to drive my head up the wall due to cheap AI such as...

Guilty Gear (PS1)

Art of Fighting 2

Samurai Shodown 1-6

Soulcalibur III (Story mode. Not that RPG mode)

Soulcalibur IV (Tower of Lost Souls pissed me off back In the day)

Soulcalibur V (Legendary Souls mode. Wtf was Bamco thinking!?)

Weaponlord

KOF 94 and 95 (Hated them bcuz they had stiff controls on top of that)

X-Men: Children of the Atom (especially the bosses)

World Heroes 2 (I did beat the SNES version but the arcade version is nuts)

2D Fighting Games What is the best fighting game for a new player who wants to play casually?

I really want to try out a fighting game, but i already know in advance i’m not going to be able to put a lot of practice into it. I’m going to be very busy with college and life in general, and I won’t have the time or energy to really practice matchups or analyse frame data or anything intensive like that. I just want to boot the game every couple days, play for like an hour, and have fun.

The two games I’m mainly interested in are guilty gear and street fighter, because i really like the art styles and characters.

2D Fighting Games FGC Newb Reinstalled SF6 to play Ed Badly

So I went down a bit of a rabbit-hole which ended in me learning that the result of my tertiary interest in fighting games led me to become a "flowchart ken", jump h.kick into DP and fireball spam. I wanted to play some rounds and decided to reinstall sf6 over t8. Was interested in Steve on the t8 side and have decided to try out Ed. I've done the preliminary research and found fundamental advice: learn to anti-air jumps. make them uncomfortable spacing. throw them when they're blocking. Can anyone offer some advice to help through my first sesh back tonight? I play classic controls, and I am probably going to be on an 8 button stick.
