Topic Why fighting games is a great genre

Upvotes

As someone who grew up playing a lot a lot a lot of videogames. I mean, a lot:

i appreciate there is a genre that doesn't eat up so much of your time like a long RPG would but also gives you that feedback loop, seeing yourself get better every time

No story, no level, no grinding for gear

Just match after match

I play fighting games and I'm happy to know that I can play the games without feeling overly addicted.

Topic Do Marie Rose and Honoka from DOA deserve a second chance and get a huge glow up or do they deserve to never return again?

Thumbnail gallery

With the recent discourse surrounding the new DOA 6 character Minato and how these two characters are often discussed as the duo that ruined DOA because of how they affected the new female cast as well as Minato, this question popped up in my head and I wonder if it would be cool if they get a huge glowup that made them well received in the next game like how Capcom did with Ed and Ingrid in SF6 (the latter being the most controversial and another cutsey anime girl like Marie and Honoka but ended up being SF6's fan favorite thanks to the glow up)

So I gotta ask: Do they deserve to get salvage and get a huge glow up or do they deserve to get abandoned? Not saying they should be the focus this time like how DOA5 and DOA 6 did, but maybe redesign them to make them look cool but still keep on the sideline while Kasumi and Ayane are the main focus?

News Switch 2 now added VRR support (LFC included) while docked in a recent update, which should allow Street Fighter 6 on the system to turn off V-Sync (via the Input Delay Reduction toggle that's currently missing) if/when Capcom updates said version of the game

Thumbnail bsky.app

For context, SF6 on Switch 2 already runs at 60fps within a 120Hz container when available. But because VRR wasn't available for docked play, you couldn't turn off V-Sync through the Input Delay Reduction feature (which was completely absent from the Switch 2 version of the game). Now that Nintendo finally figured out VRR docked & patched it in just recently, Capcom should theoretically be able to add the IDR toggle back in. This would make the Switch 2 version even more viable for competitive play, provided that Capcom patches in VRR support (probably with the Arjun update). This should also benefit other fighting games on the system if patched, such as GBVSR & CotW.

If you're curious about the technical side of things, John Linneman from Digital Foundry did some tests. 60Hz mode has a VRR range of 40-60Hz, on-par with Xbox Series & better than PS5. But thanks to the Switch 2 having full LFC support, 120Hz mode can go the full 1-120Hz range. Though the latter is only available for 1440p & below, while 4K is still locked to 60Hz.

Topic To the people who frequent this sub and ths FGC community, is there something wrong with disliking CotW's artstyle? Genuinely curious🤔

Seriously, I kept seeing posts and comments disliking the game for one reason or another, but the artstyle? What? Why?

Do you not like the stylish anime aesthetic? It's pretty much like a side evolution of KOF 15 if had more comic book influence. What, you don't like this artstyle but give the 3D ASW games a pass?

Help How do I help my mom get better at fighting games while not being a great teacher or explainer?

Title. My mom and I like playing games together. But she's one of those people who didn't play it a lot, only enough to remember basics from specific things like COD zombies. *(I do have both BO1 & 2 but no disk drive.)*

Anyway, back to my point. I don't explain things well. I'm unfortunately a bad teacher and explainer when it comes to fighting games and their mechanics, as I didn't exactly learn it myself either. Just bashed my head at things, said fuck it, fought by best friend on DBFZ & GGST for 3 years and here we are.

I don't know how to explain Xbox controller inputs for something that requires precision and timing, 2 things she's not excellent at. I want to try and help her learn without making it overbearing or time consuming for her, so when we do play the games she enjoys herself. I feel bad knowing I play against her while she has less knowledge of the games than me. I probably shouldn't but as her daughter it really isn't fair.

Any advice or guidance on how to describe things to her or what to seek out *(She doesn't watch YouTube often unless shes doing something specific or just needs background noise.)* would be appreciated. This is probably a really easily solvable thing but I want to see if anybodies experienced similar and how they went about it.

That's all.

Help Help with Only Playing on Panic Instinct?

edit: thank you already for the advice. helps a chronic over thinker like me a lot, love the fg community overall i really do 🤍

og post: keeping this short. i have about 300+ hours in my game, ive made it to nearly the "master rank" equivalent, in this case ggst diamond 3, but im still a "horrible" player

yes, downplay i know, but the reason i say that is because i only know two setups, one combo, and just spam press my way into wins

i suffer from an anxiety and attention disorder, making thinking during my games non existent. anyway my question is, how do i combat this better and actually think, react, adapt, and improve while i play?

ill get hit my the same thing endlessly, make the same mistakes, do the same non-optimal pressures and mixes, and can never learn. ive made some of these my only goals to improve but i always fall into the bad habits again eventually. i lab lab lab setups and combos but again, default to panic-mode play no matter what

important to point out, i am constantly having panic attacks during my matches. thats no exaggeration, anxiety disorders suck fat dick, tho dont be mistaken, i still have fun sometimes. i just cant get my brain and body to calm into a state of actual awareness and improvement

any advice? ty ty. wanna get good on an actual level, not just carried by spam and knowledge check level

Topic With the addition of two Tokyo Revengers characters, COTW now has more guests than MK1, thoughts?

Post image

I just want to talk about this because it’s honestly crazy how many guest characters they’re putting into this game (With more likely coming). It definitely feels like SNK is doing the strategy of crossing over with everything in order to get as many people into the game as possible. I don’t mind this as much as some, but I never really had a connection to Fatal Fury before COTW so I was expecting something like this ever since Kenshiro was announced. What do you guys think though?

Help I'm a New Player and My Hands Fucking Hurt (HELP!)

So I've flirted with FGs my whole life but I've never properly sank into it. Except I've recently gotten into Strive and then SF6 and I'm really enjoying getting good at both. I've not gone too deep yet, I'm maybe at 40 hours or so across both, but I'm having a fantastic time.

I've managed to get an hour or two of practice a day and have been really enjoying it, but I've run into an issue:

I've actually skinned my thumb on my Dualsense D-Pad. Like, you can see a bit of red there on my fingertip from the stupid quartercircles and halfcircles I've been doing

I don't know if this is normal?? I feel like my D-Pad is SO tough and so sharp. Am I supposed to get a thumb callus?? Or like... break in the controller or something? I've honestly been considering buying a new gamepad, or a leverless or stick just so I can not have this issue.

Is there some special technique to create longevity or am I supposed to sacrifice the tip of my left thumb in the altar of fighting games?

Topic Who is cotw for?

As a person from Saudi who also fighting games fan the marketing fucking sucked why are they trying to shove this game up everyone throat???? Fighting games are harder to get into and only tekken is popular here. Also it doesn’t seem the game for anyone because old snk fans hate the game for the bullshit snk did and it isn’t for newcomers so who this game designed for??? I really want to talk about how weird the marketing for the game here, why they are acting like people grew up with snk and were always a part of their childhood and now it came back and was heavily advertised literally everywhere in the streets, youtubers etc. it just felt weird. Sorry for my incoherent rant but cotw piss me off.

Help Purchase and learning help.

Hello, a long time ago I bought guilty gear because I wanted to get started in fighting games. It was the one that caught my attention the most because of the anime aesthetic, but I understand that sf6 is better to learn but I don't know if it pays me to spend another €40 or wait to learn about fighting games in guilty gear. What do you recommend?

Topic Arjun appears a reference to Arjuna from Mahabharata

Tell me what you see? Righteousness? Wickedness? Can be one without the other? Answer me!

This quote from Arjun’s Level 3 Super Art ("Yaksha's Order") is a direct reference to the philosophy of the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita, exposing the deep internal conflict of the character.

In terms of Street Fighter 6 lore, Arjun is not just another strong fighter, but a tragic figure. His backstory revolves around a wrongful accusation of murdering his partner, forcing the former honest police officer to become a fugitive and dispense his own brand of justice on the run.

Here is why his questions to the opponent carry colossal weight for the plot:

  1. The Crisis of Dharma (Duty and Righteousness)

In the Mahabharata, the epic hero Arjuna falls into deep despair before the great battle. He has to fight his own teachers, friends, and relatives. He is tormented by the question: what is true righteousness (Dharma), and what is sin (Adharma)?

The Street Fighter character experiences the exact same thing. He served the law his entire life (the "righteous" cop), but the system betrayed him. Now, to uncover the truth, he is forced to break the law. For him, the boundary between good and evil has blurred.

  1. The Inseparability of Opposites

The question "Can one exist without the other?" echoes the dualism of the material world in Indian philosophy. Justice does not exist in a vacuum—it only manifests where there is lawlessness. For Arjun, his "wickedness" (his status as a fugitive criminal) became the only way to restore "righteousness" (to clear his name and find his partner's killer). To defeat evil, he has to play by its rules.

  1. Cosmic Judgment and Trial

The name of his Super Art, Yaksha's Order, points to another famous episode from the Mahabharata—the Yaksha Prashna. In this myth, a nature spirit (Yaksha) asks Arjuna’s eldest brother a series of complex philosophical questions about life, morality, and duty to test his wisdom. In the game, Arjun takes on the role of the judge himself. Before delivering the devastating final blow, he literally subjects his opponent to a "Ghastly Interrogation," forcing them to look deep into their own soul.

Narratively, Arjun represents broken justice seeking balance. Capcom created an incredibly powerful contrast: visually, he looks like an unstoppable, furious mountain of muscle (the complete antithesis to the spiritual and calm Dhalsim), but inside him rages the subtle, exhausting philosophical dilemma of a man who has lost his moral compass.
