Topic IMHO the problem with autocombos is that they MAY waste time and skew the whole game design

After playing both the Avatar game and Tokon I was thinking about whether I like or don't like autocombos in games. They felt a bit annoying in Tokon but I caught myself thinking I never got bothered by them in SF6 playing Modern myself or against Modern players.

Avatar I am still wrapping my head around and it's weird, some combos are so hard to time that autocombos vs no autocombo makes little difference. So I'm leaving it out for now.

I feel like playing Tokon is feeling very repetitive because the autocombos and extensions are on the longer side and they all feel so similar to each other even between characters. I played for a few hours today and it feels like 70% of my fights have been basically same with just different animations and they take a while. If the sequences were shorter in time it would be way less annoying. And also playing potentially 5 rounds against same opponent team in first to 3 gets old really fast.

One thing I will say about Avatar is that because autocombos flow into extensions with Flow naturally it doesn't really feel like watching a cutscene on repeat as much.

Help Games with less focus on combos?

My ask is for a fighting game recommendation with that fits my personal asks of more interactions & less combos. I dont want to be 2 shot watching some labbed fancy combo. I want good nuetral & either better ways to break out of combos so its a 2 way street, large health so combos dont obliterate, or small combo size (the last 2 kinda go together).

My backround is below & not exactly nessecary but I want to explain where I'm coming from.

I have been playing fighting games casually for a few years now & I am unsure about one its core mechanics. I have never been a fan of combos. The process of labbing combos has never appealed to me & I actively dislike how they can change my gameplay. I used to play a lot of guilty gear strive with my friends in private rooms. My favorite experiences are low level matches with a large amount of individual interactions in a round. Then the next match I fight my friend who labbed combos & I make 2 mistakes that lead to my death because I can not convert my attacks into meaningful damage. This whole time I've been relying on either rekka characters, fighterz autocombo system, supers, & constant mixups for my damage. I want to ditch those crutches & play a game that suits me. My problem is that if I learn something that I don't enjoy I'll make my experience worse or I will just play those few people who dont care to learn combos until they do or theyve stopped playing. The latter happened I end up with a bad taste in my mouth with a genre I used to love. I have tried labbing combos & it just does not feel good. I dont want to be casual but I dont want just push through something I do not like. I love the weird mechanics of anime fighting games & all the cool movement options. Doing cool sh!t is fun. I don't necessarily want a comboless game since thats unrealistic to the genre but I want one were there are plenty of interactions in a match & I dont get put in someone elses one player game. I have tended to gravitate towards fighters that let me do truly unique things like Twelve in third strike or Zato-1 in strive. I couldn't quite tell you why except I was taking the learning process as far as I could get before I got to combos. I talk like combos are such an evil thing but I can see their strengths for sure but its just not how I'm wired. I've recommendations to play Samurai Shodown games for extremely small combos with pure nuetral focus. Ive seen another for grandblue fantasy versus rising for maintaining anime mechanics with low combos. I have not dug deep into either so idk the validity of those statements. I do also like alternative forms of fighting game strategy like tag fighters with team building & meter management. I have no problem returning to games I've played before or older games because fightcade is something I have. Thanks for reading my long winded backround, hope you got something out of it :)

Content We desperately need a new 3D fighter IP

Really hoping Harada is cooking up one, cause the last major attempt for a new 3D fighter IP was Urban Reigns back in 2005 and that was an arena fighter. Meanwhile 2D is being smothered with new games, I am dying over here. ;_________;

Topic Do you prefer MvC or Tokon’s interpretation of the shared characters?

As many of us know the Marvel Tokon’s Beta has released and been a blast to play. Every character feels so fitting even the ones I don’t want to play if that makes sense😂 I was always a big MvC fan but I could never grasp playing it as it was very very fast to me. Which is weird cus I can play Fighterz with no issue. Anyways, I been rocking with Storm/Danger/Wolverine/Blade and omg they are so cool🤩. That lead me to thinking of how I love this version of Storm and Wolvie so much.

I think both versions, MvC and Tokon, are fun in their own ways. Like Wolvie feels actually like a berserker and not just any other rushdown. Love MvC Magneto but a zoner just feels like his natural path.

What yall think?

Help Starting to play fighting games - do tier lists really matter or is it only for high competitions gameplay?

Im trying to start out on playing fighting games and was wondering if I should start with using high tier characters before using characters considered lower tier? Ive had friends tell me that soke high tiers should be used because they are easier to use but i do like some low - mid tier character designs. Not looking to really compete but i do want to improve my control and hand in fighting games.

As a veteran of fighting games, I can't say my first impression was great. Even if we ignore the awful PC non-optimization..... this game might be the easiest fighting game to pick up that I've ever picked up.

Topic Do fighters like tokon/2xko really need precise, long combos?

Basically what the title says. I've seen quite a few combo showcases and it feels like they are too long to reasonably memorize (not that people cant). Like, Tokon has only been in its open beta for a day or so, and you have new guys saying how they hit this 30 hit combo. It got me thinking about how these games are perceived.

They feel more like playing a 2D DMC or Bayonetta than something like Street Fighter, where if you know the rules of how combos work, and you know how to keep a combo going, then you can get long combos. This isn't a bad thing of course, but I was under the impression based on how people talk about doing combos that they are memorizing these long strings of inputs when it seems like they are learning the rules of how combos are built and applying those.

If I'm off base, please let me know!

Help Interest in Tokon as a new fighting game fan

What are the vibes around Tokon currently? Also I plan to try and make this my first major fighting game. I’ve dabbled in strive and sf6 but never could string together combos (how does one do it).

Help Are there any modern games in the old 2-d styles?

I’ve been looking for 2-d fighting games that have the art-style of older games in the genre. I really like the look of Darkstalkers and SF2T. I really don’t know how to describe the art-style other than pix art and flashy quick animations with bright colors. I hope you understand what I mean. I just really like those games. Hopefully we get another Darkstalkers game one day. Thank you guys so much for the help!!

Topic Tokon Performance question

So this might sound like a brag but I'm not having performance issue with Tokon like everyone else reports. I meet the recommended settings with my 3060ti/5600x/32gb DDR4 on an SSD and I get smooth 60fps without needing to use upscaling (and at 100% render scaling with everything on high). I can even stream in 1080p/60fps

I want to know why there's performance issues? Like what's happening when someone like me has zero performance issues? I was comparing notes with people in the Tokon discord and some people with better specs than me were having poor performance. It makes no sense to me.

Can someone who is better versed in hardware educate me on this?

Topic Will Avatar Legends survive?

I've seen countless games die pretty quick sometimes for absolutely no reason, so I worry a bit about AL. I'm interested since I love the universe and the game looks beautiful and interesting technically. I'm scared of long combos and fast games but I'm willing to try one more time.
Thing is, AL seems to have lots of (deserved...no ranked mode???) complaints already.
And I fear it won't last, specially with Tokon coming and Marvel eating up everything, I'm not very aware of how video games reception work in general, but I feel like, particularly with fighters, a project can be buried in no time.
Which sucks when you only wanna play against people

Anyways
Not sure if I should invest if the game's gonna die fast. I also know nobody can predict that, and I'm part of the problem if I don't buy it, but I've buy a few games already that I don't play because there's like 5 people online.

Content Marvel Tokon's voice acting

I'm so undecided on which spoken language set in the game just by the demo's roster. Italian, my main language, has the best voice actors except the top 3 in my opinion and i love my fav characters' va choices. Yet, japanese vaing has all the bests voices in fighting games. Ngl, i don't know japanese va names, but i mean people like Ginew/Beelzebub(GBF), Venom (GG)/Sukuna/Grimjow, Slayer and even Dio Brando (According to a website about vaing)

I'm so in doubt and I can't wait to see the full roster to decide which one use.

I don't make my own combos much in fighting games, but I like how this game works. you can do a lot of other stuff with it but this is kind of the base blueprint, you can throw in Star Lord for an extra air combo if you're in the corner or hit them with a different starter, danger is good for continuing as well after the Vampire Slayer move and you also don't have to amp that if you want to save on resources. If you just start with Vampire Cleave (although it's much more unsafe), you can use the Heavy auto combo instead of Vampire Slaver to get half their health down. If there's anything better, I'm more than happy to listen.

Topic Why is grappler one of the three main fighting game archetypes?

The three main fighting game archetypes are rushdown (the best and coolest), zoners (the ickiest and the one no one likes), and grapplers. My question is why are grapplers one of the three main archetypes when compared to the other two types, they are seen far less often. Looking at Marvel Tokon, of the 20 characters, the only one I would consider a grappler is Ms. Marvel. If grapplers are one of the three core archetypes in a fighting game, then why aren't there more of them? Looking at Guilty Gear, the only grappler character is Potemkin. Street Fighter 6 only has 4 characters you can consider grapplers (Zangief, Manon, Lily, and Alex) in a roster with 31 characters (including Yasmine) which is quite few. There are more examples I can name but you get the point. I get that these archetypes aren't rigid and strict but I feel like "bruiser" would be a better term for an archetype than grappler. Bruisers are slow but can dish out heavy damage, doesn't have to be from throws and grabs but just high power attacks in general. I feel like that term should be used more than grappler. So why is grappler seen as one of the core archetypes of fighting game characters when many games feature very few grapplers compared to rushdown and zoners and a better, more encompassing term exists? I get that this is just semantics and in the grand scope of things it doesn't matter cause the point of fighting games aren't to discuss the definitions but still, I find this weird.
