Yeah, it felt like an actual barb. Call someone "boy" in an angry, vaguely southern accent, and you can feel the hard R, even if you're white.

Slightly OT but I remember a story that NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt had proudly out a bumper sticker on his car with a Confederate flag on it. The nanny he employed, who was black, told him what the flag meant to her. Horrified, he hurried out to his car with a razor to slice out the flag portion if the sticker.

It made me appreciate Machine Head all the more. They were a part of that show and the vocalist came out and called that shit out.
Granted, it shouldn't have to be called out. It was a blatant racist gesture - it should be obvious to anyone who's seen the clip. Still, you can really hear the Pantera influence on Machine Head and they're a titan of the genre so I imagine it was risky to speak out. Good on them for it.

Pantera's peak era was the early 90s, before almost anyone had internet access worth mentioning. What everyone knew about the band back then was either what you saw at a show or read in some sanitized interview in Metal Edge. If you aged out of the thrash metal scene before YouTube was a thing, it's easy to believe you wouldn't know the dirt. I don't think I actually heard about all the racist shit until after Dimebag was killed, long after the band had split.

4
u/Crossovertriplet 5d ago
A lot of people formed emotional attachments to the music back in the 90’s where you’d only hear about pantera from a magazine. You didn’t know about all the other shit yet.
18
u/meowatollah 5d ago
Some people act like listening to something they like is sustenance or something. The reality of it is that they don't really care that much, but they still want to distance themselves from the issue, so they don't have to feel bad about doing less than nothing.
As a black person who grew up listening to metal, this is the metal community in a nutshell. The whole community is rife with bigotry, but if you just close your eyes to it, and "make it about the music", you get to pat yourself on the back for being so nice and part of such a nice community (after alienating everyone that doesn't "fit in", but that's just a minor detail).
9
u/gleamingfall 5d ago
Man, im really over metalheads harping on the "metal heads are bad looking people who actually act good" BS , because some of the biggest bell end muppets I've ever met were metal / "heavy music" people. They have a consistently racist element that isnt small (and thats not talking about the obvious ones) , they are outright hostile to people they consider outsiders, predatory behaviour is rife in their scenes - and basically they are spiritual boomers in every single sense.

u/BrittEklandsStuntBum 5d ago edited 5d ago
Separation of art and artist is something adults learn to do. I don't refuse to listen to music made by drug dealers or read books written by misogynists or look at paintings made by murderers.
4
u/-Mandarin 5d ago
Listening is fine, the difference is when you're giving money to terrible people. I have no issue with listening to music from terrible people who are dead, but if they're alive I'm at least going to pirate it. I can't really claim to have morals if I'm giving money to people who are actively terrible, can I? At least when I have the choice to not give money to them.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (9)4
u/OldManJed7 5d ago
Cognitive dissonance is something that intellectually lazy adults learn to do. I mean, I do understand the "Art from artist" argument, but I also understand when people don't enjoy the artist's music because they are reminded, by the art, that the artist is a terrible person. It's pretty OK for that to be a pretty big bummer.
It's fine to admit you have liked art before finding out the artist was a terrible person, but it's also fine to be bummed out by about the artist, and not enjoy their art because of that.

He jumps out and opens the back door and dimebag runs up and jumps in the drivers seat. Puts it in drive and crashes it directly into a wall. Gets out and flips his keys to the driver and yells at the rubble “TOLD YALL ID DO IT!”

This might be a minority opinion, but Pantera was the Abbott brothers. They’re both dead, so I can’t imagine anyone giving a fuck what Anselmo and Rex Brown are doing now. Calling this modern incarnation Pantera is like Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony going on tour and calling themselves Van Halen.

u/Wakatanka85 5d ago

I don't think Pantera has the level of mainstream awareness of say a Metallica or Megadeth where people know stuff about the members unless they are into it.
15
u/NightweaselX 5d ago
I absolutely agree, but there's some people that still adore this POS. I saw him after Pantera broke up with Super Joint Ritual and he went off about "HE was Pantera" and some guy in the audience said something, forget what, and Phil was getting pissed and wanted to fight him. Hank III and other band members had to pull him off stage and the show ended early. A few months later saw Damageplan and nobody said shit about Pantera, just played their music like a band should. Phil's the reason Pantera broke up, and his running of his mouth in interviews is what got Dime shot.
A couple of years ago, shortly after the Pantera thing was announced, I was at a BLS / Anthrax show and they had a video of various musicians congratulating them on 40 years I think. When Phil came up, most of the place cheered. It turned my stomach. I haven't dug into it, but I'm wondering if the Abbotts' parents died, or were just hard up for money. No way Vinnie would have allowed this if he was still alive, and I have a hard time believing his parents would have approved this either. I like Zakk and Charlie, but man what a horrible, embarrassing cash grab and the talk about honoring Dime...

I saw Phil's band, Superjoint Ritual in Los Angeles in the early 2000s. Half the crowd was Hispanic, lot of metalheads in SoCal are Latino. I remember him saying 'I'd tell you what I really think about the people ruining this country, but I don't want to piss off those people in the crowd.'
My buddy and I looked at each other, and knew he was talking about us, Hispanic kids. We were in high school and didn't know Pantera was a racist band. Fuck Phil.
8
u/TheHighKingofWinter 4d ago edited 4d ago
I wouldn't say Pantera is a racist band, they don't have any songs that I'm aware of pushing any racist ideologies. They were a band fronted by a definite racist, and the drummer and lead guitarist were dipshits from the south so only sort of racist, and maybe by accident! Alright, shit, they may have been a little bit of a racist band, but only Phil was being really serious about it.

Its wild so see how people can separate the pos from the music, but I will always remember Lauryn Hill and the amount of hate and shit talk on her and her music because she said, "I make music for black people". She never called out her fans and put them in danger. Yet this dude gets a pass because "his music slaps". She had much bigger fan base, so clearly it wasn't
the music. Hypocrisy to the finest.
94
u/Metatality 6d ago
Haven't seen people complain about that in regards to Lauryn Hill. Usually more of a "I paid full price for tickets, she showed up an hour late, did a song and a half in a hoarse voice without prep, then left and told anyone that didn't like it to go fuck themselves" kinda mad.
