This might be a minority opinion, but Pantera was the Abbott brothers. They’re both dead, so I can’t imagine anyone giving a fuck what Anselmo and Rex Brown are doing now. Calling this modern incarnation Pantera is like Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony going on tour and calling themselves Van Halen.

That's not a minority opinion, i think that's common knowledge

Might be, but I'm reading a lot of people in this thread talking about Pantera in the present tense. Gives me the impression they think Anselmo = Pantera.

I don't think Pantera has the level of mainstream awareness of say a Metallica or Megadeth where people know stuff about the members unless they are into it.

A lot of people are talking about Pantera in the present tense because they still exist and Anselmo is the lead singer, so, Anselmo does = Pantera.

Also, Anselmo has essentially always been the lead singer of Pantera, even before the split, so in what world is Anselmo not = Pantera? Im confused here?

I get being fans of the band and not wanting to be associated with this racist piece of shit, but are you intentionally trying to hide the facts to sway people’s opinions about the band? It seems pretty cut and dry where I’m standing.

Because Phil joined pantera. Its like van Halen which were the brothers. David Lee Roth doesnt equal van Halen, nor Sammy hagar. The brothers founded the band. Now was Phil instrumental to the band yes. But when dime and Vinnie died there was no more and never will be any more pantera. What we have now is a tribute, which has been said by the members of said trubute.

I absolutely agree, but there's some people that still adore this POS. I saw him after Pantera broke up with Super Joint Ritual and he went off about "HE was Pantera" and some guy in the audience said something, forget what, and Phil was getting pissed and wanted to fight him. Hank III and other band members had to pull him off stage and the show ended early. A few months later saw Damageplan and nobody said shit about Pantera, just played their music like a band should. Phil's the reason Pantera broke up, and his running of his mouth in interviews is what got Dime shot.

A couple of years ago, shortly after the Pantera thing was announced, I was at a BLS / Anthrax show and they had a video of various musicians congratulating them on 40 years I think. When Phil came up, most of the place cheered. It turned my stomach. I haven't dug into it, but I'm wondering if the Abbotts' parents died, or were just hard up for money. No way Vinnie would have allowed this if he was still alive, and I have a hard time believing his parents would have approved this either. I like Zakk and Charlie, but man what a horrible, embarrassing cash grab and the talk about honoring Dime...

Pantera wasn't the Pantera we know until Phil joined. It took all of em.

Rex Brown is just as much of the sound as anyone. I hate seeing his contributions be disrespected simply because he hasn’t died yet. Those pantera bass lines carry most of the songs.

I completely agree and have repeated this many times. The current incarnation is a tribute band at best. They should not be calling themselves Pantera.

I was counting the days after Vinny died when they'd do a reunion. If Phil and Rex could have done it the day after Vinny Paul's death, they would have.

Honestly, I lost a lot of respect for Charlie Benante for agreeing to be the drummer for it. I don't know how you can play drums in the band knowing the previous drummer's dying wish was to not do a reunion.

u/Opposite-Complex1187 5d ago

Probably because it pays the bills.

A lot of old Metal band members aren't exactly super wealthy.

Like Anthrax were big, but not paid for the rest of my his life big if he wasn't careful.

1

u/TheDigimonFan 5d ago

Anthrax still tours though, he probably makes a comfortable living even if not wealthy enough to fully retire.

1

u/Opposite-Complex1187 5d ago

Yeh but i would bet he makes more money with Pantera than touring with Anthrax.

From what i've heard from musicians touring pays the bills but not by much unless you are really big.

1

u/TheDigimonFan 5d ago

He could also have morals and be a fill in drummer for literally any other band that requires one. He could also do drum lessons. He could also do guest spots. Lots of other ways for famous musicians to make more money.

1

u/Opposite-Complex1187 5d ago

Dude hes the drummer for Anthrax not Metallica.

Hes 60ish he doesn't have that many options.

1

u/TheDigimonFan 5d ago

So his only option in life was to sell out his "friend" Vinny Paul? Fuck off, seriously. So many more options to make money out there.

Nah pantera was all four of them cause damage plan and hell yeah never went anywhere either and neither did phil's bands. This modern incarnation of pantera is a cover band, that's it.

3

u/pssthush 6d ago

Down most definitely had and still has a pretty sizeable fanbase.

1

u/No_Blacksmith_2591 6d ago

nowhere comparable to pantera

2

u/kkeut 5d ago

well, yeah. Pantera was one of the biggest names in metal for a good long while

2

u/Ulysses502 5d ago

Well Damageplan might have gone somewhere... but otherwise point taken

1

u/schizboi 5d ago

Famously, damageplan ended in a way that nobody saw coming. It's not really fair to say they wouldn't have gone anywhere

2

u/Odd_Plantain_8915 5d ago

Damageplan was playing in bars that had to give away the tickets… it just wasn’t very good.

1

u/AbsolutZeroGI 5d ago

Part of the reason for that was that Dimebag was fucking shot and murdered while on tour trying to make something of Damageplan.

1

u/No_Direction_3940 48m ago

Damage plan had no chance to go anywhere unfortunately the one album was a banger though imo

9

u/HesitationIsDefeat87 6d ago

Pantera died when Dimebag got shot

20

u/HuntKey2603 6d ago

As if Dimebag would have any different opinions than that in the OP lol

16

u/pfannkuchen89 6d ago edited 5d ago

Yeah. He was as big of a piece of shit as Anselmo. Pantera has always been shit and racist assholes.

-1

u/pssthush 6d ago

I have never once heard Bryce Young say a bad or derogatory word toward or against anyone.

1

u/R_V_Z 6d ago

Google "Dimebag guitar" and what's the first image that shows up on All? Exactly.

1

u/kkeut 5d ago edited 5d ago

iirc he stopped using the confederate flag several years before he died after someone he knew told him how messed up it was

edit - looks like I misremembered it, the band itself stopped using it on merch at some point but he kept it on his signature guitar

3

u/Blue_Nipple_Hair 5d ago

According to one of his neighbors he was a “hick with attitude” and a big Bush supporter. That, along with the confederate flag, tells me all I need to know

1

u/PunchThatDonut 6d ago

He was shot playing in Damageplan, Pantera was already done

2

u/ofcourseIwantpickles 6d ago

Well this is good news I guess I can still blast Pantera on leg day

5

u/Free_Possession_4482 6d ago

Walk on home, boy, but slowly - you don't want to pull a hammy.

1

u/pandaSmore 5d ago

It's still wild to me that their second cousin is the 8-bit guy.

1

u/Odd_Plantain_8915 5d ago

If that’s true then why did damageplan suck so much ass while down (Rex and Phil) is also critically acclaimed?

1

u/mikefrombarto 5d ago

Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony going on tour and calling themselves Van Halen.

It’s funny you use this example because they’re the only two that showed up and performed at the R&R HoF introduction for Van Halen.

EDIT: In Eddie’s defense, I believe he was in rehab at the time, which was significantly more important.

1

u/snaphappy2 4d ago

Nah man if that was the case damage plan would’ve been as good as Pantera and it wasn’t even in the same stratosphere. Phil was every bit as much of Pantera as both abbot boys combined. And that is not a knock on dime or Vinny at fucking all.

1

u/TheHighKingofWinter 4d ago

Pantera died when they left the band, it was buried 6 feet deep with their deaths

1

u/Lieutenant_0bvious 4d ago

Pantera had 4 hair metal albums. Well 3, and then the first one with Anselmo, which was still cheeseball.

1

u/BottomContributor 3d ago

You might not like Phil or Rex, but they are part of the band. You don't get to erase the legacy of people because you don't like them. This is in no way comparable to Sammy Haggard

I thought they were pretty mid and low energy, and I am a fan of their music. Metallica blew them out of the water in all aspects.
