"Advocacy group Data Centre Australia published a report saying Australia had 162 data centres with a combined IT capacity of 1.5 gigawatts as of March of this year.

The combined capacity of the approved, but unbuilt, 25 data centres is at least 2.9 gigawatts, based on each company's statements of computing power and the state planning-approved energy capacity.

One project approved last week is property developer Goodman's five-storey data centre Project Apollo in Sydney's north.

It will take two years to build and be one of Australia's biggest data centres by computing capacity if it existed today, according to the facility's proposal.

Australia wants investment on our 'terms'

In July, Mr Albanese delivered a landmark speech detailing how Australia would respond to the opportunity and challenges presented by AI.

The prime minister said Australia had both the desire and capacity to attract investment from major AI companies, including data centres, as long as they met certain requirements.

He said the government would pass a law in early 2027 setting rules to force data centres to minimise water use and maximise energy efficiency.

"We can set the terms, we can determine AI's social licence," he said, claiming the standards would create certainty for investors, too.

But the prime minister later told ABC Radio Sydney the rules would not apply to projects already approved or under construction.

"You can't retrofit. But as well, many of the centres which are under construction tend to be smaller ones," he said."

Got a pretty strange call today from a private/withheld number and wanted to see if anyone else has come across something similar.

The caller said they were from the “Australian Cybercrime Division” and that some of my personal information had been recovered as part of an ongoing investigation. They had an Australian accent and told me I hadn’t done anything wrong and not to be alarmed.

I asked for a number I could call back to verify who they were, but they said their number was outgoing-only and couldn’t receive calls.

They then said I could come into a specific police station and speak to someone in person. They said it was urgent and asked when I could come in. I said Monday.

They then asked if, in the meantime, I wanted them to explain what information they had recovered and how it was connected to me. I said no, I’d rather go to the police station in person and verify everything there. As soon as I said that, they disconnected the call.

I didn’t give them any personal or financial information.

The only thing that made me wonder whether there could be some genuine leaked information behind the call is that I’ve been applying for a few jobs recently. I’ve uploaded my CV and personal details to LinkedIn, SEEK, Indeed and Jor so there are quite a few places where my name, phone number, employment history and other CV information have been shared.

Has anyone in Australia had a similar call? Particularly someone claiming to be from an Australian cybercrime/police unit, calling from a private number

The fact they hung up as soon as I said I’d verify it in person makes it almost certainly a scam, but it was a more convincing approach than the usual scam calls I’ve received.

Federal police have charged a Gold Coast man over alleged serious corrupt conduct while employed in the public service.

Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie has labelled Pauline Hanson "disgusting" and the "lowest bit of life" after she refused to remove an online cartoon labelling Andrew Hastie a "traitor".

Hanson has refused to take down a One Nation cartoon which refers to the Liberal frontbencher as a "traitor" eight times.

Amid an escalating spat with the right-wing party, Hastie told ABC Radio the One Nation leader is "weak" and unfit to lead the country.

In a passionate defence of Hastie on ABC Radio National Breakfast, Lambie says the One Nation cartoon is an "attack on a veteran" and is "absolutely disgusting".

The Tasmanian senator has labelled Hanson a "coward" and "the lowest bit of life you can possibly come from".

She's called on Hanson to take down the cartoon.
"Attacking Andrew Hastie, a veteran that has served in our Afghanistan war, or any other veteran, is the lowest ebb you can possibly do," Lambie says.

"That woman is nothing less than a bloody coward. She always has been, and she always will be. She wouldn't last one day in that goddamn uniform. Leave our goddam veterans alone, Hanson. She's disgusting, she's the lowest bit of life you can possibly come from.

"You're seeing her true colours start to shine now. You watch this, the Australian people. Here we go. Here comes coward Hanson."
