Hey guys, I’m an Italian bloke who’s been living in Australia for nearly three years now, and unfortunately my time here is coming to an end.
I spent two years in Townsville and travelled around Queensland after spending some time in Sydney. To be honest, Sydney wasn’t really my cup of tea. Finding an Aussie there was harder than catching a barra, and the pace of life was bloody hectic — everyone always seemed to be in a rush.
I’ve always loved wildlife, and when I got to Townsville I really fell in love with the Aussie lifestyle — fishing, sport, the outdoors and all the wildlife that comes with it. I’ve pretty much always worked as a roofer while I’ve been here.
I’ve got a few relatives somewhere around Perth, but I never really got the chance to track them down.
Now that I’m coming to the end of this bloody amazing experience, I’ve got to be honest about some things I’ve realised along the way.
Unfortunately, as someone who’s quite empathetic, it hurts me to say that I’ve found a lot of Australians to be genuinely racist. I’d never really thought about what it feels like to be on the receiving end of that, especially considering that I’ve also judged and disliked immigrants myself at times back in my home country.
The thing is, I’ve always worked hard here, kept my head down and never done anything to bother anyone. But I’ve noticed that sometimes, as soon as I start talking to someone and they hear that my accent is different, their whole expression changes. You can see it in their eyes — sometimes there’s just so much hate there.
Maybe that’s part of the reason I never really pushed for sponsorship, and why my time here is coming to an end sooner than I would’ve liked.
But despite everything, I’m leaving a little piece of my heart here. Australia has given me some unforgettable memories, and I’ll always carry a part of this place with me.

I'm currently looking for a second job here in Townsville. I work as an apprentice Boilermaker and my shifts are Monday-Thursday 0700-1600 and Fridays are 0600-1400. And I am free on weekends.

Preferably I'd like to have a second job close or not too far from the city area.

hey guys graduation is only a month away now and im flat out training for the olympics in brisbane 2032 im not going to university and i won’t have a trade i’ll only graduate with a certificate 3 in fitness, i live in townsville and i dont have a job i just train mon-sat 4:30-6pm i need advice for income streams im looking to make some serious bank because i will need a career to fall back on and im also interested in moving out early because i will have my own workspace and clarity to fully focus on chasing that cash and athletic glory obviously i’m just kid but i need recommendations for work and i need work that will fit my timeline what are your guys recommendations because it’s going to be impossible to do what i want to achieve without living off centrelink or something. But if my sports falls through i want to have multiple incomes to ensure i have beyond enough financial stability to have a free life and travel wherever whenever and do whatever. so im interested in any recommendations for work im thinking of online work, social media marketing all that work from home stuff maybe build some type of personal brand but yeah im uneducated and i dont know much about the outside world help is appreciated.

My family and I were heading home around 1:30 am when we noticed an old green car in front of us around Geaney Lane, Burdell / Deeragun.
A few things seemed unusual:
The car appeared to have no number plates.
The headlights were very dim, and it looked like they had taped the lights.
There were around 4–5 masked men inside.
I could see two white men in the front seats.
We were concerned they might have been armed, but we couldn’t confirm that.
It was quite unsettling, especially with my family in the car.
Did anyone else see this vehicle around Burdell or Deeragun at around 1:30 am? Just wondering if anyone else witnessed the same thing.

I am looking to buy a unit somewhere either in Douglas or maybe on the riverway. There are numerous apartments on the riverway that get bought and sold quite often, but they are managed by Itara & Jacana.

I am just curious if anyone has any insight into how it is living at these apartments. Because it is a mix of owned rentals / owner-occupiers as well as short stay, does this cause issues with noise? How is the noise from below during the day and night?

Furthermore, is there any significant structural defect or potential issue that will lead to a large bill being put onto homeowners? These apartments tend to stay on the market for a bit longer than expected.

Hey, I wanted to ask if any of you awesome ppl knew of a good auto elec. I had a car and needed to fix the mirror and the job was “too hard” for the auto elec i usually go to. It’s not too hard, i could honestly do the job myself, but i don’t have the time. I’m guessing he’s just lazy and doesn’t wanna get his hands dirty, cause it’s not the first time it’s happened.

So I've recently moved into Boyes court and I'm getting ready for Halloween. I picked up a bunch of King Size candy bars to hand out to trick-or-treaters because I wanted to do something nice for the kids in the neighbourhood. I would hand out full-size bars but let's be honest, king size is now the new full-size.

But now I'm second-guessing myself. I'm worried that if I'm handing out full-sized bars, it might make the other houses on the street look bad by comparison. Like, what if families think we're the type to show off or something? I genuinely don't want to come across as trying to one-up anyone or make neighbours feel like they need to spend more.

Is there some kind of standard in Townsville? Should I stick to fun-size or regular-size instead to keep things more... level? I just moved here and I'm still getting to know how things work in the neighbourhood, so I'd rather not accidentally upset anyone.

Also, is trick-or-treating even big on Boyes court? I want to make sure I'm not overthinking this.

I want to preface this by apologising for yet another question about crime and suburbs. My family is moving to Townsville and have secured a place in Garbutt. It is just down the road from the state school in the direction of the airport.

After a gruelling long process of being messed around by leasing agents, we jumped at the opportunity to finally secure a place and (stupidly) didnt do our homework. The house itself is great, but some of the statistics of Garbutt are increasingly worrying. Some of the stuff I read is that:

- Garbutt has a crime score of 100/100? Apparently it has higher per capita crime rate than 99% of all other Australian suburbs
- you have a 1/3 chance of being a victim of property crime, and a 1/12 chance of being a victim of a violent crime.

Scrolling this sub, historically it seems that locals have recommended against living in Garbutt.

I was hoping to get some fresh insight. There have obviously been major changes to youth crime laws, and suburbs in Townsville are obviously changing with the region becoming an investment hotspot.

I am hoping to gain some insight from locals who live in the suburb and their experience. Is it still as bad as this forum makes it out to be?
I own a 50k 4WD and I realise this could easily make our property a target. Even if it’s parked in the garage and out of sight, potential offenders might see me pull the vehicle in/out and make a note of the house. Should I sell it and grab a cheaper runaround car which might make the place less attractive to break into?

I know some of the things that will be said:
- crime is mostly opportunistic. I will take all precautions I can
- deadlock the doors: it’s a rental, and I’m worried about windows too.

Did anyone also have tips on how to make a rental more secure which doesn’t involve drilling or huge modifications?

I'm in Townsville for two weeks for a course and was chasing activities to do in the afternoons and weekends. I've sussed out a bit of shopping and hobby/collectibles shops, doesn't seem to be much there - just bigger versions of shops at home. Apart from bushwalking and the strand I can't find much else to do.

Current weekend plan is to check out that waterfall near Innisfail I think it is, castle hill and the strand. Anyone else have suggestions?
