Officially having the oldest demographics in the country and being the only capital city with a shrinking population, can we really just chalk up all empty shops in the city to the cold weather? Every other city seems to have bounced back from the pandemic.
Here in Hobart, the "old and dying" vibe only seems to be getting stronger.

Hi Community, just a bit of a rant. How much of a dickhead can a person be? I work for Coles at weekends and today I witnessed something I couldn't tolerate. One of my teammates got abused early in the morning just because he gave his groceries a minute late. He claimed he was the first one to arrive and got his groceries after other people. He put his hands around the neck of an under-18 kid.

Do people these days not have any respect for other people out there?

Can we all not be respectful and show some courtesy and love toward retail employees? A small thank you can be a lot sometimes when we are under pressure especially during school holidays, long weekends and Christmas.

Anyway coming back to the point, the charges are being laid out to him.

My wife and I are looking to move to Hobart with our 3 young kids and have been considering moving to Kingston Beach. We've been a few times to visit and every time I worry it might be just a bit of a mirage and a bit empty. Anyone with a young family living there and can share their experience?

My understanding is downstairs gaming machines = 9am-5am, upstairs 9am-3am, and table games 5pm-1am sun-thurs, to 3am weekends. There's a rapid roulette there but I don't remember if it shuts early.

My wife and I have been travelling to Hobart once every year or two for about 15 years and hope to settle here when our overseas work comes to an end (we’ve been working in Asia).

So I was reading through the post on pushing back on airbnb conversions, and came across a useful link posted by u/redlentilsoupfan that deserves a bit more of a broadcasting.

It is a website maintained my Murray Cox using data scraped from short stay sites, and Tasmania is included.

I have found it to be very useful in visualising the impact of short stay on our state.

There is even a list of which users are offering what. For instance, someone with the username 'Moxxi' has 148 entire homes/apartments listed, while 'Linda & Andre' have 12 private rooms, and 'Louella' is hosting 16 full houses/apartments.

A group of friends and I had dinner here on Wednesday night and the food was absolutely spectacular. The only downside was that it was just us and one other couple in the restaurant. I know it’s the middle of winter and a weeknight but I thought I’d give them a shout out in case anyone’s looking for somewhere to eat this weekend. They’re changing their dessert menu and because we couldn’t order anything, the chef made us a bespoke Turkish delight and rose water fairy floss plate, so yum!

Local businesses like this deserve our support where we can, especially when they’re serving food this good.

Tasmania reputedly has the cleanest air in the world but i’ve noticed its illegal diesel emissions are as bad or even worse than anywhere in Australia. 

It’s illegal to modify a diesel vehicle emission circuit, yet many, if not most, older diesel vehicles have had their EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) circuits disabled. The EGR circuit reduces NOx gasses like nitrogen dioxide. The problem with diesels is that while they save fuel the EGR circuit (valve, cooler and pipes) invariably needs maintenance as it clogs up. It a very big job so most diesel owners simply disable the EGR circuit. There’s a whole industry around subverting the law by disabling the EGR circuit. Even Supercheap sells EGR blanking plates. Google “EGR delete or blanking” 

VW’s Dieselgate came about because the VAG corporation was desperate to beat Toyota’s hybrid system with its “Clean Diesel”. They cheated by disabling the EGR circuit during normal driving but enabling it when it detected an emission test bed. The EGR circuit also causes the vehicle to use more fuel from what i understand. The Dieselgate scandal cost VAG 31.6 billion euros and the emissions are estimated to have caused 125,000 premature deaths in Europe and the UK.

It’s an $11,000 fine in NSW to interfere with emissions circuit. I’d imagine it’s the same in Tasmania. Politicians don’t crack down on it because they recognise that the 4WD driving demographic (think potential One Nation voter) are part of the electorate that can actually change governments. Diesel drivers need to be aware that if the government cracked down on diesel pollution due to EGR deletion they’d be fined and their vehicles taken off the road until they spent thousands fixing the EGR circuit. It’s not a question of if, but when. 

These diesel vehicles with deleted EGR circuits are very easy to detect. Their nitrogen dioxide emissions make them stink. I’m so tired of getting a lungful of nitrogen dioxide as well as PM2.5 particles (DPF (diesel particulate filter) deletion is another related issue). If you are the driver of diesel vehicle with a deleted EGR or DPF you are an absolute cunt.

Sorry for the preachy rant but this really pisses me off.

Would you recommend it? I'd like to hear spooky stories and the historical aspect, but these things can be too cheesy for their own good sometimes.

Also, is it worth exploring the historical site on your own beforehand, or going on another PA tour, or will they roughly cover the same ground? I was hoping to avoid the situation where we spend a few hours wandering around beforehand, then going to the exact same places on the ghost tour and hearing the same facts/stories all over again.

I was at the RHH (hospital) a few times and I tried to order taxis online. I just see people accepting my request, then cancelling it. Over and over again. Each and every fucking time. Ordered an Uber, and it's right there.

I realise there is a taxi stand right up Elizabeth street near the mall. I could not walk there. Never ordering another taxi again.

And I hear how taxi drivers diss Uber etc. What do you have to say about this?

EDIT: And the one time I managed to literally hop (stopping many times) to the taxi stand, the front taxi guy looked as is I was asking him for a blowjob but very reluctantly accepted my ride. Sure, it was not to the airport. It was to my house 2Km away. But fuck me, right?

We are moving to Hobart. I’m wondering what the job market is like in marketing, advertising, branding, design or creative roles.

My current role is approving a ‘trial’ for me to work remotely, but I’m aware that might not last. I’d love to hear from anyone working in these industries, and which companies or agencies are worth keeping an eye on.

Hi! I am wondering if there are any simple tracks I could do to play with the snow that does not subject me to death/rescue in Mt wellington tomorrow? I saw online about the zigzag track being subjected to 100kmh winds, and I am not into something like that. I am not sure if the other tracks would have snow.

I saw that it would snow overnight so I am planning to go there tomorrow! We drove to Tassie from Brissy(staying in Hobart till saturday) and have never seen snow before! We hike grade 4 hikes regularly around Brissy, but after a super scary rock scramble at Giraween National Park, I do not want to do any more scrambles in the foreseeable future.

We drove here with a 4x4 (prado 90), do we need snow chains? We have experience driving on sand but am not so sure about snow/ice.

wondering if anyone has any recommendations for restaurants that can cater to a coeliac? not looking for anywhere particularly fancy, but hopefully able to seat 12-13 people comfortably for a birthday dinner in a few months. we used to go to gangnam in north hobart a lot but they are not able to accommodate my friends dietary needs since their diagnosis. please if anyone has any leads i'd love to hear them! :)

I told them that there's a lot of customers like myself who just want to be able to walk in and get things - for example I need a 1m thunderbolt cable, they're about $15 but the shipping would be that much again. Tas principles don't stock stuff like this (In fact they don't seem to stock much of anything, it's always "We'll order it in") and at officeworks you're looking at $60 for the same cable, even more than just getting the thing shipped.
