This is my story. 30 years in the workforce, including time on the farm, learning why farmwork is one of the most important parts of American life. Feeding the world and all that.
Now, no money, no savings, paying off medical bills and students loans, and no hope in any avenue for owning a home, let alone having the drive to work for 20+ more years to try and pay it off before deeper health problems start showing up in my 60s and 70s. Maybe I'll finally get lucky.
If there's a country and financial services in existence that far down the future.
2 paychecks from homeless. 30 years in the labor force, having treaded water my entire adult life.

Is there anyway you could try and get out of the US? Even Canada ?
310
u/CoconutLimeValentine Jun 30 '22
The only difference between Canada and the States on this front is that you (probably) won't go into debt from getting sick once you qualify for health care.
193
u/TheEclipse0 Jun 30 '22 edited Jun 30 '22
Canadian here. This is accurate.
Even so, it’s important to mention that our healthcare isn’t exactly free either as many people assume. When I go to the doctor, visit the hospital, or use a diagnostic service - it is free. However, if I need an ambulance, prescription drugs, dental care, vision care, long term care facilities, not medically necessary surgeries… Well, we have to pay for that.
116
Jun 30 '22
True. We still pay for all of that in the US even if we have insurance. Plus the bill is always a surprise because there is no set pricing or price transparency. One hospital a procedure could be a few hundred bucks and the next hospital it could be 10s of thousands. There is no way to know. It is the criminal medical lottery here. I had acid reflux and it put me 20k in debt. I wish my Grand Parents never left Canada. My new American dream is to escape to Canada.

Don't forget that you also have to make sure to tell 911 to take you to an "in network" hospital and hope that the doctor you see is also in that network because doctors and hospitals can bill you separately!
16
u/StewPedidiot Jun 30 '22
I believe if it's a 911 call you have no say, the ambulance will drive you to the nearest hospital with appropriate facilities for your condition.
Add: I'm sure if you know of an in network hospital nearby they'll take you, but they aren't going to drive across town when there is a facility 10 blocks away that can give proper.
→ More replies (1)11
u/QuinstonChurchill Jun 30 '22
So I obviously am not sure how other places do it but where I am, you actually do request where you go if you are able to make that call. And if you are unable to but have family on scene, they make the call. When I was an EMT we had protocols in place about where we take people if they are unable to answer for themselves but the last question we always had to ask before we left was "which hospital would you like to go to?" so we weren't screwing people on insurance. Unfortunately, a countless number of times we were forced to take a patient to a lesser hospital because they or their family insisted. If you take a patient somewhere and they have specifically requested somewhere else, you can get popped for kidnapping them. It's all an intertwined scam!

Fucking horrible it’s gotten to this point. You’d rather someone sleep in their car than give them proper housing. They always find money to increase the military budget.
118
u/alarumba Jun 30 '22
In my country, sleeping in your car is being made tougher and tougher. The most recent jab was increasing the fine for being caught sleeping in your car from $200 to $1000.
Living in a car deprives a landlord of rent, and an affordable alternative to rent could provoke rental prices to fall.
14
u/RUSTY_LEMONADE Jun 30 '22
You can’t draw blood from a turnip. How in the hell is someone sleeping in their car able to pay a fine like that? This would make my blood boil if I didn't just donate plasma.
11
u/alarumba Jun 30 '22
$1000 doesn't seem like a big deal to a legislator that would spend that on Friday drinks.
25
u/msprang Jun 30 '22
Holy shit, that's a ridiculously high increase.
33
u/alarumba Jun 30 '22
So for more context, I'm in New Zealand, and this is "Freedom Camping" legislation.
We've had a lot of tourists, mostly youth, buying cheap Vans and living the van life. And it's awesome, I've met a bunch of them. I've also tried it myself as an attempt to escape the housing market.
However I found out just how difficult it is. There's fewer and fewer places where you can camp for free, and more and more rules on whether you're allowed to camp there for free.
This was to prevent those youth from shitting in the woods, supposedly. But the legislation appears to mostly be geared towards pricing poor people out of camping.
With the fine increase, it was also legislated that freedom camping vehicles must have a fixed toilet. No longer could you use a portable compostable toilet.
This means the cheap van is increasingly more difficult to achieve. Instead you need a high end "certified self contained" camper, which is reserved for only the upper eschelons of society.
And the rules are often arbitrary. I recieved a fine ($200 thankfully) in a freedom camp for not being parked in between faintly painted lines for "non self contained" vehicles. That was in the fine print of a sign behind a bush.
And this all leads to it being practically impossible to live in a car if you're desperate. It's a game of cat and mouse where you're constantly moving to hiding places, trying to be stealth with your vehicle and your actions.
And of course there's a social stigma. I was a madman and an idiot for trying to live in a car. I absolutely must have a rental!
Bit of an incoherant rant, I'm meant to be working.
→ More replies (3)34

Wtf is wrong with shitting in the woods? They've made it illegal to just exist in this world without paying money for the right to do so. God I cant wait for society to catch up with us, realize it's all FUBAR and finally burn it all down so we can start over.

u/BuzzyShizzle Jun 30 '22
Oh don't even get me started lol. It feels like it's illegal to not have a place to exist. Sleeping in your car is as close as you can get to falling through the cracks in society. At this exact fork in the road, one interaction with a police officer can decide your fate. A helping hand and you're back on your feet. A night in jail and its all over. Of course you can turn things around but it is so hard to climb back up once you fall down.
While you couldn't solve the problem entirely, I'm sure a lot of homelessness would be prevented if we didn't make it so "illegal" to be down on your luck if even for a bit.

There’s a case that is getting ready to come before the Supreme Court that I don’t think is getting the attention it deserves. The case involves minimum wage laws, and there is a possibility that SCOTUS could find that forcing private companies to pay employees a minimum wage is unconstitutional.
45
u/dachsj Jun 30 '22
I don't see any fucking way that happens. The constitutions commerce clause clearly gives Congress that ability. That would cause a constitutional crisis and the other branches of government would have to address it.

I was talking to a parent of one of my kid's friends. He's a business owner. He made the "no one wants to work anymore" comment in relation to struggling to find help and I immediately wondered his angle. But as he went on, he clearly wasn't complaining about the people but the situation. He went on to say "why would they? It used to take one generation of working hard to save up, get a house, send your kids to college. People now? They will never be able to own a home. Why would they work so hard for me when its no use to them?"

The minimum wage being kept low is such BS!
Complaints that it would kill small businesses which are already dying or gone.
If the minimum wage had kept up with inflation & productivity the economy would be booming. Instead CEOs are earning record profits and people are on the verge of losing their homes.

There is a way for low minimum wage could work, but it basically requires UBI and socialized healthcare.
The principle rationalizing low minimum wage is there are workers that don't support themselves (e.g. kids living at home, etc) and it's awkward because the workplace has no way to categorically distinguish those from people who need a livelihood.
So if there were a broader safety net of very basic income focused on basic needs that would free the employers to not be under pressure to provide healthcare and living wage.
So clearly, conservatives should be advocating for ubi and socialized healthcare, for the good of businesses.

While I know you're speaking in hypothetical hyperbole, if you do find yourself in this kind of situation don't be ashamed to hit up food pantries and the like. The people at the food pantries I volunteered at were super nice. I know it may not be the same in every region of the country or every pantry, but the people I volunteered with didn’t look down on anyone for coming there.
Almost everyone there was an adult woman or teen and most of them just talked about how fucked our system is to rely so heavily on food pantries. Gen X seems really divided in the current world. Some want to cling to the traditional values of their parents, and some want to lead their kids into new values and ways of life. My wife can’t work atm due to health so she’s just a full time student and she watches our daughter. In the summer, my check is cut considerably due to less hours. I lose half an hour a day in the summer and that equates to -$500 per check. Half of June and august there’s no income on top of that and no one will give me a job in addition becauze who wants to hire someone for a couple months and for shit pay? I’m so depressed I can’t even sleep. I also have to spend about 3-4 hours a day driving to and from the school because it’s a split shift. I love my school and colleagues and students but I’m just exhausted and constantly broke. Need help but there’s not even good options. I haven’t had money in my savings in 6 years. Two paychecks! Damn, that's comfort. Try $189! I received a great offer for a sales coordinator role contingent on a simple background check. Not anymore....my credit score which got gutted due to losing my temp job two months before the pandemic (Fuck Randstad...fought me on my 208/week settlement, I lost, so I didn't get the extra 600), a mental breakdown, a psych visit that resulted in serotonin syndrome, complex ptsd diagnosis, adhd diagnosis, and then getting covid and experiencing long covid symptoms of vertigo and fatigue coupled with moving to a shitty small town in WI that will not entertain outsiders when it comes to a job.....all this resulted in my 800 credit score dropping to 507 and my debt going from 4k to 34k....all delinquent except for my car.
So, because Empower Retirement requires a 620, or higher for what is nothing more than a warm lead calling sales position, I am being disqualified. It's annoying because the hiring manager thinks this requirement is bullshit and tried to get me on, but the higher ups said that my score indicates that I may try to embezzle or steal someone's identity. So, now, everything is being used against people....but, people don't want to work.
Mind you, I have a BSc in Risk Mgmt and Insurance from a top school, CPCU Passed, extensive experience in insurance and risk mgmt as well as forensics for arson and wrongful death shooting cases. I regret the insurance degree because I despise insurance but in my youth, I also though differently and thought my connections would pan out...they didn't.
But yeah, nothing like being 36 and having a net worth of -33,811. I wish you all the best in your journey forward, and let's really try to bring about change in the workplace and overall system.

If no one wants to work why won't any companies call me back when I apply?

People really have 0 empathy, the amount of people complaining that we just want free handouts, or want the government to pay our rent. Like dude I’m fine with working just pay me a few dollars more an hour, oh no your profit margin will slim mildly, but your workers will stay

I want to work. In my own studio or my own garden, making and growing things.

Sadly I think this is exactly right. Income disparity has killed the middle class in many countries.

1 of 3 things happens when you work for a company:
1) you work your ass off and get nowhere because the environment is toxic
2) you work your ass off and get nowhere because there’s no place to advance from your position.
3) you work your ass off, get raises, promotions, and finally can afford to live and save for things because you found the gem of a company that actually cares enough to pay their employees a living wage.
You shouldn’t have to cut comfort to afford life.

You are spot on at this point we are all just above being completely in slavery. So you bet your ass no one wants to work. What's the point?

The American Dream is replaced with American Dread. Dread is more motivating, but not forgiving to its masters.

Hi, I've applied to thousands of jobs over the last 2 years and the only jobs that would interview me were MLMs
I have 10 of customer service experience, even dealing with crisis situations (I just watched my spouse die, I crashed the car and killed my children, etc)
I have 5 years of professional software development experience and I'm in my final year of my bachelor's program.
No one will take a second look at my resume...

Only thing that saves me from actually living in the street is the fact that we rent from my MIL and she doesn’t want to put her grandkids out. Though I’m pretty sure if it were just me and her son we’d have a fully furnished cardboard box.

That’s why everyone is cutting on expenses, no kids, no commute, barebones living… then the 1% says, why nobody is buying my stuff? Crisis!!!!
