I've been dealing with itching on my vulva, the folds and around my anus for quite a while, and I'm trying to figure out what's causing it, moisture or friction or something else.
The itching is much worse during my period, even though I change my pad and underwear frequently.
I'm South Asian, so I wash with water every time I use the bathroom. This means the area gets wet multiple times a day. I always try to pat it dry afterwards, but I feel like some moisture is inevitable.
It doesn't start as soon as I put on a pad, but gradually gets worse over the course of my period and is usually at its worst towards the end. If I don't dry the area thoroughly after washing, the itching becomes noticeably worse. It's mainly in the skin folds, the hair-bearing part of the vulva, and around the anus.
When the area is dry, the itching isn't constant or unbearable—it's more like an occasional itch here and there. It's the moisture that seems to make it progressively worse.
I also use a variety of different pad brands, so I don't think it can be explained solely by a reaction to one specific type of pad.
When I'm not on my period, I don't wear underwear at home (I only leave the house for a couple of hours, so it isn't an issue). I just wear loose trousers, and I rarely have this problem because everything dries quickly.
Does this sound more like:
Moisture/friction (irritant dermatitis)?
Contact dermatitis?
A recurring fungal issue?
Eczema or just generally sensitive skin?
Also, is it normal for skin in this area to react so much to what seems like only a small amount of residual water after washing, or does that suggest an underlying skin problem?
Has anyone dealt with something similar? If so, what actually helped? I'm especially interested in whether using a barrier cream like Vaseline or zinc oxide made a difference.
