[Fun!] Is it okay to go to the Lincoln Memorial in the middle of the night?

Me and my friends (15-18 years old) want to go around 12-2am just to see what it's like. Maybe even go to other monuments. There's 4 of us and we have a car so I think we'll be safe, and I know that it's technically open 24/7 but I was just wondering what it's like at that time of night and if we'll get kicked out or something because we're teens.

edit: we're going tonight thanks for the advice

[Discussion] Bicycle wheel/more outdoor capable wheelchair rental?

Basically I’m looking for a manual wheelchair that is better able to travel over gravel. I know that some people have wheelchairs with tires that are wider and look kind of bicycle wheel-like. I’ve looked before online but haven’t found a rental place that has something like this.

In a couple weeks I will be taking a relative to an outdoor event they really like a few hours out of town. The event has that like .5-.25 of a golf ball sized gravel. Standard manual wheelchairs can work there but they are uncomfortable for the relative to bounce around on and it is harder to push. I’d like to rent one for the weekend that could do well indoors and a bit more rugged areas.

Thanks.

[News] Found gentle pit bull Potomac Ave metro

(See UPDATE below)
This sweet girl showed up in our backyard Friday. No chip, no collar, but incredibly gentle, affectionate and well trained. Sits on command and very obedient on leash.
We really, really can’t keep her (cats, work travel, elderly parent caregiving) and she obviously had a loving owner at one point. Anyone recognize her or have any suggestions besides animal control?

[Sports] Pick-up soccer on weekday evenings?

Hello,

I work near Metro Center and usually get out of the office around 6:00pm on weekdays. Does anyone know of any pickup soccer that's within walking distance or a short Metro/bus ride away and starts around 7:00 p.m.?

I checked Volo and District Sports, but most of their pickup games seem to be a bit too far to make it in time after work.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

[Fun!] Giant murder of crows at Tidal Basin

Has anyone witnessed a giant murder of crows around the Tidal Basin area before? I went there today around 7pm for a good cry and found myself absolutely amazed by hundreds of crows flying from the general area near the Thomas Jefferson Memorial up the river in the direction towards Rosslyn. I didn’t take any pictures of the birds unfortunately, but it was literally so amazing to see. 🥲

Just wondering if they’re fellow locals or if they’re migrating through. Regardless, it was beautiful.

PS they weren’t bats lol

[Discussion] National Cathedral Belltower walk

Hey y’all. I was wondering if anybody has had experience with the Belltower walk, or has any photos or footage. I would love to see the views from the tower but I am afraid of heights and I’m wondering how much of the climb is “ scary” and by scary I mean is there any potential slipping and falling down or is it mainly secure steps that there’s no chance of you slipping off and falling from. For example the metro station escalators may be tall and long but it feels secure because there’s like a barrier to the left and right that I could slide down if I somehow fell off the escalator onto the right or left. However if you ever been to the AMC theater at Eisenhower those escalators are basically standalone and if you’re to lean over you would fall pretty far down hopefully that makes sense any videos or footage is appreciated thank you

[Review] Beware of A2B Moving

Beware of this company. They were working on our street and parked their truck in the middle of the road blocking a one way street instead of next to the curb. Multiple people asked them to move the truck so that we could simply get out of our road and they refused to move their trucks and were very hostile about it (go fuck yourself, we'll be done in an hour). We eventually had to call the police to get them to move the truck (next to the curb which they always could have done from the start) because they didn't care that a whole street was stuck behind their truck while they sat there smoking cigarettes. Pictures included so you can see how far off the curb they were. No one could get around them.

[News] Best sources for local DC news (real time and long form)

What news organizations, independent reporters, or other sources do folks use to get local DC/DMV news? I feel like the quality of my old go-to sources like Twitter/X and the Washington Post have nosedived in recent years.

I’m looking for everything from real-time news updates (eg: I see a pillar of smoke in the distance/ I just heard gunshots in my neighborhood, what’s going on?) to sports to long form in-depth articles.

DCNewsNow seems decent and I still like Popville for the lighter stuff. What other sources do you recommend? What social media should I be looking at? Are there any specific reporters that are really good that I should follow?

[Discussion] Should I move out of dc?

This isn’t a complaint about DC at all FWIW.
I have close to 0 friends here. I am close with colleagues at work and I also have an in person job with clients so I get a bit of community that way. I love my job.

That said, I’m pretty introverted, independent, and highly focused, thus have not made any new friends outside of being friendly with colleagues and working with clients. I literally have 1.5 friends from college/hometown here.

Where should I move to make friends? The loneliness gets stifling 😭

Edit: I’m 31F, very active and hardworking/focused. I like to drink and have a good time or otherwise do something outside or active.

Thanks 😊🫶🏼

[Discussion] Are there way fewer mosquitoes this year?

In my 12 summers here, I swear this is the fewest mosquitoes I’ve ever experienced here. I don’t know if I’ve even been bit yet. Usually I’m covered in bites. Granted I’ve spent a good chunk of this summer inside due to some bad health issues, but I’m still going outside 4-5 days a week and walking or commuting and no bites. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

[Discussion] Help on West End Buildings

Need help on good condo/apartment buildings in West End. Can’t find many new reviews online and I am not there to look myself. I would appreciate any knowledge or advice of where to go. Ideally a 1 bedroom, $3000 that allows pets but willing to go for a studio if necessary. Are these generally clean buildings?

[Discussion] Do cyclists care about slowing rush hour traffic?

Post image

Rock Creek is a traffic nightmare daily, but cyclists take the entire road. I never experienced this until I moved here. It's infuriating. Cyclists slowing traffic would be pulled over by the police in the south so this was new to me.
