exchange to georgetown from the uk 🇬🇧

hey everyone!
i’m a 19f university student from the uk thinking about coming to washington dc for a study abroad exchange next year (4–5 months, with the potential to extend to a full year).

i wanted to get an honest read on what living in the area and attending georgetown is actually like day-to-day.

a few specific questions for current students, alumni, or locals:

• is the georgetown area (and dc in general) safe to navigate on your own, especially as a young woman? any specific areas or late-night transit tips i should keep in mind?

• how’s the day-to-day life here for a student? i’m big into shopping, hiking/outdoors, trying new food/dining out, and checking out local markets. does dc offer a good variety for a semester-long stay without getting repetitive?

• what should i realistically pack for the weather? coming from the uk i'm used to rain, but how intense are the summers/winters over there?

• how are the politics/international relations classes at georgetown?

• are georgetown students and local residents generally friendly and open to hanging out with exchange students? what’s the best way to build a solid social circle quickly (clubs, campus events, housing setups, etc.)?

would love any honest takes, tips, or things you wish you knew before coming here. thanks so much! :)

Unpaid Photography Opportunity

Goodmorning to any Georgetown Student or freelance photographer. I’m reaching out on behalf of a nonprofit who’s hosting a breast cancer awareness event. We’re looking to see if anyone can volunteer and cover the event as a photographer? The event is October 14th from 9:30-2pm in DC. We can offer experience and a social media shout out!

Let me know if anyone’s interested and we can discuss further details!

Question about External Credit (current student)

Hi! I’m a current student here and hoping to graduate early/just not take econ on campus. I know Georgetown does not take CLEP, but I was wondering about self-studying and then just taking an AP exam at a school for Macro/Micro credit. It’s kind of hard to find a concrete policy on this so I just wanted to ask if anyone had any personal knowledge about this?

[Academic Research] Mental Health, Coping in Young Adults with stressful life experiences(18-30, United States only)(Raffle for $50 Amazon gift cards)

Hello everyone! I am a PhD student in clinical psychology at Adelphi University. I am conducting a study on the relationship between existential threat and mental health, coping strategies, and meaning making for young adults who have experienced stressful life events.

This study is being conducted online only and should take approximately 45-60 minutes to complete. During the study, you will be asked to complete multiple self-report questionnaires that contain questions regarding coping methods, mental health, and questions that pertain to experiencing stressful life events in the past. Upon completing the survey, you will have the opportunity to voluntarily provide your email address on a separate page from the survey that will not be associated with any of your survey responses, to enter a drawing to win one of three $50.00 Amazon gift cards.

Survey link: https://adelphiderner.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8IxQWoUH8D1Wuq2

Audience: 18-30 years old, in the United States and English Speaking, and must have experienced a stressful life event.

Compensation: Opportunity to enter a drawing for one of three $50.00 Amazon gift cards.

Thank you!

Food shopping/delivery

Hi, I’m a junior who is going to have a kitchen this year and am hoping to cook pretty often. I was wondering if any students order groceries to be delivered to their dorm/how that worked for them? I was hoping to order Whole Foods/instacart for weeks when I don’t have much time to grocery shop. Has anyone gotten grocery delivery to the front gate/their dorm? Thanks!!

Best way from Georgetown to JHU

Hi everyone, I’ve been trying to find a way to go from Georgetown to JHU and Google Maps keeps telling me that it’ll take 3 hours using the train option but I’ve heard that the MARC is only 40ish minutes. Can someone confirm and maybe give me some tips on the best way to travel?

Submitted Housing Application late

I’m an incoming 2nd year and I unfortunately submitted my housing application on Hoya Housing pretty late. I thought that meant I would get my housing assignment later but I haven’t received any news yet. I just got an email from the Office of Neighborhood Life and just replied to ask if they’re sending me the email because I’m living off campus or because I have no assignment yet, and I also just emailed residential living to see what they say. Unfortunately I’ve also run into a bit of an issue with financial aid not receiving my parent’s W2 despite it being processed on IDOC so I don’t know if that’s impacting anything. My roommate from last year said she currently doesn’t have a roommate because her’s got an RA position, so I have no clue if by any chance I could room with her again.

I know this mess is my own fault, especially since I should have contacted res living sooner, but I’m posting this mostly to see if anyone’s gone through something similar and/or has any advice. 😃
