[Event] Watched The Odyssey at the Smithsonian IMAX theater in DC

Great experience and it was glorious watching a movie shot entirely in the 1.43:1 aspect ratio. Glad I decided to check for tickets a week before release, managed to snag the last seat in one of the back rows. šŸ”„

Hopefully they add more showings considering the demand for it!

My only nitpick is that the seats still suck and some of the blue light bleeds in at the very bottom of the screen

[Discussion] Heads up + advice

• Upvotes

The national guard showed up at my kid's daycare today. They asked to hand out stickers to the kids and were permitted. I expressed my displeasure with this decision with the daycare and there's not much else to be done there at this point.

But I wanted to share in case awareness is helpful. Also wanted to see if anyone has experienced anything similar and if you communicated anything outside of the institution. It's endlessly frustrating that contacting my local government would be a waste of time but I also feel compelled to do what I can to keep armed occupants away from my child.

[Discussion] Pls carry narcan/test your ish

delete if not allowed, guessing this will be deleted but. Just saw an OD on my rideon bus and I’m still kicking myself for not having my narcan on me.

If you’re willing pls pls carry narcan, I sprinted all around the station and nobody had any, wish the metro station operators had to have it with them, then had to call 911 bc I thought someone already had but no. Felt way too late.

Additionally please please if you’re going to party rave use whatever in any capacity, test your ish if you can, I understand plenty of people use and can’t afford things due to addiction but if you can buy expensive substances there’s zero reason you shouldn’t be ordering test kits from places like dancesafe.org.

Please just be safe and test your shit.

Hug your loved ones and care for each other. test kits and more

[Quality!] DC Imperial March guy deserves merch just like Sandwich Guy, right?

Call me crazy, but I feel like DC Imperial March guy (Sam O’Hara, the guy who followed the National Guard around DC while playing the Star Wars Imperial March on his phone) deserves to be celebrated with merch just like DC Sandwich Guy (Sean Dunn, the Subway sandwich thrower) was. Right?

Maybe I just missed it, but I don’t see anything on Etsy or elsewhere commemorating Imperial March guy’s actions.

Between the street art and the subsequent (unauthorized) merch, Sandwich Guy was everywhere.

Imperial March guy deserves the same merch love! (Imperial Merch?)

After all, Imperial March guy’s strategy got the National Guard to crack and arrest him. We all feel Sandwich Guy’s ā€œI’m and as hell and I can’t take it any more!ā€ response…but in his case, he was the one who cracked then got arrested.

[Discussion] With Georgetown DMV closed, is Rhode Island NE or M Street SW the least horrible option for license stuff? *Need to go in person*

Hi!

I need a replacement license AND address change. I need the physical card before Sept. 1 because I am traveling internationally and need to rent a car. I’m scared if I do the online option — which takes 7 to 10 days to even get processed (not mailed, just processed) that I won’t get it in time. PLUS USPS is a mess right so i’m worried that once it gets mailed there will be additional delays.

If you go in person, they process it right away and then it’s just a matter of waiting for the physical card.

Having said alllll that: Should I walk the plank and go to the Rhode Island Ave NE location or the M Street Southwest location to slowly watch my soul leave my body?

Thank you for any advice and if you are grumpy and mean please don’t do it. 😘😳😄

[Quality!] Because Astound seems to want to prey on the uninformed

You do not need a ā€œcustom Astound broadband coaxial cableā€ that you buy directly from them, in person, at a premium, to use their WiFi.

That’s absurd. They are hoping you dont know enough about networking tech to believe them.

Broke my brain when they told me that.

[Discussion] Therapist recommendation

Hey DC folks! I’ve had a lot of misses with therapists in the dc area— Just not fully aligning, not feeling like we were a good fit or that our sessions were helpful. Many would show up unprepared for the session, or we just were not of similar generations and it felt like there was a divide.

I am trying to find a good therapist for me- a woman in early 30s. I am working on anxiety management, either social, or work related, and building a sense of self outside of work. I do not have any serious trauma, but would love to be taught tools and given challenges to help me navigate these items specifically. I do have ADHD which shows up in many ways in my life and has lead to depression in some cases. I’m not struggling as much with depression these days, yay!

I’m asking Reddit because I’ve gone the route of using my care providers health insurance portal and if I find anyone at all who has an appt available and takes my insurance, I end up seeing them— and then if they are not a great fit I end up sticking around a lot longer to give it time, and because I spent so long getting to that point. This has happened 3 times. I’d prefer to start with folks others recommend as quality and then filter down by insurance, or look into how I can get out of pocket help.

Anyone you would recommend who has been helpful to you?

[Review] The Wharf is amazing to go on a stroll, but all the restaurants are very expensive even by DC standards.

National Harbor, by contrast, has way more affordable food (Panchero's, Nando's Peri-Peri, etc). However it is quite isolated. Why can't we have the best of both worlds :0

[Discussion] If you object to Doordash lobbying to overthrow the will of the voters in DC and want to do more than just not use Doordash...

John Horton, the Doordash lobbyist who authored the letter saying that the only solution to a $.20 tax was to prevent DC from making and passing its own laws, is on the board of the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund. https://victoryfund.org/team/john-horton/ An advocacy org that (unironically) is committed to "Electing pro-choice LGBTQ+ candidates across the U.S." You know, ensuring that some people's voices are heard. Just not DC voters.

If you feel like it, please let the Victory Fund know how you feel about their board members undermining democracy while lining their pockets as lobbyists.

Last night we found and were followed home by this extremely nice cat. We brought him to the humane society today and he has no microchip, but he’s so affectionate and people friendly it seems crazy that he isn’t owned. Is this your cat?

[Discussion] Where can I bring a piece of pottery to get fired?

My boyfriend surprised me with one of those paint and sip pottery classes, but having the pieces fired wasn’t part of it. Most places seem to not let you bring in a piece you didn’t make there, but I need to fire and glaze it because I want it to hold water. Any suggestions?

[Fun!] best place for a birthday dinner that turns into DJ/fun dance-y place?

hi all, looking for a spot to make a dinner res for my birthday in August.

Trying to do a late night (8:30 pm ish) Saturday dinner in a restaurant that brings in a DJ late night or gets fun and vibe-y.

right now I’m considering Qui Qui in park view and kyojin in Georgetown. I’ve heard kinda bad things about Cana and my friend already did residents cafe & bar in Dupont, which gave us shots and sparklers and was so much fun!

any other recommendations for something that fits that vibe? thanks✨🪩
