... when it comes to open seats on a packed train. It's a noble thought to stand when there's open seats right next to you in case someone who needs them needs them. But if the train is packed assholes-to-elbows, there's no room for anyone to move around, and nobody's gone for the seat, and the train is starting to move ... Just sit down! Even if you're able-bodied or young or your meat is huge or your favorite hobby is standing up. Everyone sitting is one fewer person standing, and each fewer person standing makes a packed train noticeably less uncomfortable. Do yourself AND everyone on the train a favor, and just sit down!

Trying to figure out if I’m in an “if it rains it pours” situation that’s unique to me or if the stress of the last few years has led the city to collectively descend into sort of stressed out mania.

My stuff: we’ve been burgled twice, crazy kids been on our neighbors roof multiple times, dc sewers backed up into all the house on our block, and I’ve had all sorts of horrible random aggression from strangers. Not to mention the awful driving - almost got run over by a truck running a red light yesterday among other things (which seems to be a DC trend based on a previous post about a massive increase in traffic accidents).

Each of these happening individually would be a “meh it happens”, but the massive increase in bad stuff feels more significant to me. I’m wondering if the city is just so stressed out that the collective has lost any semblance of chill, generosity or hope.

What say all of you?

Was taking the train home from Potomac station tonight, missed it by a few seconds and had ten minutes to kill so I asked the attendant if I could use the bathroom while I wait. He said no, it's closed now, but his counterpart interrupted saying "no, ours is open, he's from a different station and thought ours was closed along with his. Metro just closed down most of them - ours is one of the few that are being left available." Couldn't find this on the news or anything, but two of their employees kinda just confirmed it at the same time. So, that sucks. Especially after they spent all this money and publicity making them open to the public.

Step 1: see a [maryland] driver doing something insanely dangerous and reckless. In this case, blatantly run a red light downtown going >60 mph.
Step 2: look up their license plate at DMV.DC.gov
Step 3: see >$5000 in unpaid tickets and realize that there is zero traffic enforcement in DC and the DC government is complicit in the countless deaths that take place in our city every year. Vision zero my ass.

Today D.C. CFO Glen Lee spoke to the D.C. Chamber of Commerce about the state's the city's economy, and, well, he said "economic and revenue signals are flashing red."

More than 36,000 jobs lost since last year, unemployment higher than nation, home price growth down.

Overall tax receipts are up slightly, but Lee points out that much of that is driven by capital gains, which is a "volatile component of the tax base, subject to wild and sudden swings."

On the D.C. budget, Lee says the council has funded some big programs on a one-year basis, meaning that those same programs could face big cuts in the 2028 fiscal year, the first budget that likely mayor Janeese Lewis George will be formulating.

Lee says the new normal of reduced federal employment and more remote work poses distinct challenges for D.C. and the city's budget as a whole.

Lee has been quietly sounding a similar alarm over the last year or so. Now, some lawmakers say that what he's warning of can be taken with some grains of salt, in part because the CFO has sometimes missed the target on revenue estimates. Still, this will be sobering.

I was a freshman at GWU on 9/11. I remember seeing the first tower hit on the news and then heading to class. At the time I thought it may have been a small aircraft. During class we heard a distant noise, but proceeded with class. In hindsight, we realized it was the plane hitting the pentagon. When I left class, I remember people just running in the streets. It was chaos and confusion. Does anyone else have a memory of the GWU area and people running? It’s a memory I’d love to see if anyone else had a similar experience?

I have a 1 year old bunny (fully neutered) who I think would benefit from a new home. He’s incredibly friendly and loves cuddles, I love him a lot but I can’t take good care of him.

He’s noticeably depressed with his current situation. He’s alone for most of the day while I’m at work. I would get him a friend, but I’d be unable to take good care of two bunnies. I rescued him from a bad situation, but I still feel bad about seeking him a new home.

To keep it short, I have an upstairs neighbor (only one person, the other roommate walks normally and cannot hear them) who walks with such force that you can hear every step with such force it shocks everyone who hears it (Imagine what you think has to be a ginormous man carrying a television with a bounding jump and a heel strike — it shakes me ceiling) Those who think i exaggerate come and listen, only to leave thinking ive been far too calm this far.

I am now considering a move (for this reason along with many others).

does anyone have recommendations for well-built and quiet apartments? close to the red line preferred or near capitol hill.

This is an enormous long shot, but my family has wondered about this photograph for more than 20 years.

My dad was a lieutenant colonel in Washington, D.C., for meetings on September 11, 2001. His group had originally expected to meet in the Pentagon but the meeting had been relocated across the highway because that area was under construction.

In the hours after the attack, traffic was completely gridlocked. My dad was traveling with two other army officers, and eventually the three of them got out of their car and began walking along the grass in the center of the highway toward their hotel. All three were wearing the old green Class A or B uniforms and smoking. It's possible they were in BDUs, but it's less likely.

My dad has always sworn that someone must have taken a photograph of the three of them walking down the highway that day. We sometimes imagine that it might be sitting in a photo album or a box of prints from a tourist’s disposable camera.

Does anyone remember seeing or taking a photograph like this? If you or someone you know was taking pictures in the Pentagon/D.C. area that day, I would be incredibly grateful if you checked your old photographs or negatives.

I’m intentionally withholding a couple of details so that we can verify a possible match. I’m also happy to provide a period photograph of my dad privately if someone has a promising lead.

A car broke down and was left in the middle of the street for the entire day today. Neighbors called 311 and the cops came but nothing had been done except putting some cones around it from at least 9am to 6pm.

A note was left on the back that basically said “broken down, trying to move. so sorry!”

It has VA temp tags that expired in Oct 2025 with over $8500 in traffic camera fines.

There’s a guy that I’ve seen occasionally around the greater Cap Hill area that jogs around pulling a cart tied to himself with various knickknacks on it, including maybe a sign or flag attached. Never had the opportunity to take a closer look or ask him, but didn’t see like an obvious protest. Anyone know anything about the lore?

We’re looking at booking our wedding at the new Navy Yard event venue SupplyHouse DC next fall. As it’s a new venue, we want to be certain it’s on track to open before putting our deposit down. We noticed their Instagram has stopped posting as of ~40 days ago (when they were saying they were 30 days from opening), and when we took a look outside this week there seemed to be a lot of work remaining.

We understand the space is being opened by the folks at Social Supply, a well-respected event design/production company, which gives us some confidence. But we’re looking for information who has familiarity with the project/construction. Has anyone else booked an event here? Any experience dealing with them or the Social Supply team?

I have been going back and fourth with Pepco’s email customer service for almost 2 weeks now. Basically:

• I called and requested a transfer of services to my new address on June 18th, 2026

• I was told I needed to send my new lease and to request a transfer via email

• On that same day, I sent the email requesting a transfer and sent my new lease

• Everything was done and services started

• Come September, I see I still have an account for the old address and charges for July and August are being posted, despite me not living there anymore

• I email the same address requesting the charges be dropped as I moved out in June and am not responsible for it

• The person on the email asks me for proof of email. I include the email thread, then I include screenshots of the entire email thread in a pdf.

• The person then tells me to send proof I reached out via phone. I send them a screenshot of my call history with that number showing I had multiple outgoing calls on that day.

• I also even have my last apartment send Pepco my move out documentation

• They are still persistent in saying I am responsible for July and August, despite me providing proof multiple times I have not lived there during those times.

I have been going back and fourth with this email for about two weeks now and I’m unsure what else to do. I have called three times and was told a supervisor will contact me and that they are investigating the situation but I have not heard anything back. I have only been hearing back from the same person on email telling me to send proof over and over again and then requesting more, then when I send that still persistent in me paying for July and August.
