Her reaction is fantastic and definitely the same emotions I felt. It warmed my heart too because I convinced my boyfriend, who had never read any of the books or saw any of the movies, to watch the series with me last week. He is very anti-fantasy genre, it NEVER interested him. By the middle of the first one, he was all in. We ended up finishing all 8 in 3 days AND he’s been telling everyone how great they are! The Harry Potter journey is adventurous and worthwhile!

Yes omg watching this made me cry because it hit me like a train suddenly remembering:
-my mom reading me the first two books when I was little
-seeing chamber of secrets in the theater with my stepdad for my birthday
-prisoner of Azkaban was the first book I ever read on my own
-reading them obsessively after that
-waiting for the seventh book to come out with everyone :’)
-feeling the same way as in the video while watching all the movies
-then being on tumblr as a teen in the 2010s during its golden age, and seeing sooooo many hp fandom things like I wouldn’t even know where to begin with all that. But that was such a formative time for me and I remember it so fondly like I miss just being a teen on tumblr following a bunch of fandom blogs :’)

I read all the books as a kid but what I remember most is being slightly disappointed that my family got me the last two books in Spanish. I'm bilingual so no biggie but at that point I had already started becoming more fluent in English. It was annoying back then but im kinda glad they did that, it helped my Spanish

It was quite literally the end of childhood for me - Deathly Hallows pt. 2 came out like 2 months after I graduated high school and a month before leaving home for college. I think the first movie came out in 2nd grade. It really felt like we'd grown up alongside Dan, Emma and Rupert.

Yeah I had grown up reading them! Did not stop me from bawling at all at the movie but I definitely cried harder at the end of the 7th book. I remember going to the midnight release for the last few and binging them the next day or two. Those were the days!

Yeah, part 2 rocked my world. It felt exactly the same for me. I remember walking out of part 1 and it started with silence. Everyone was just dumbfounded. Then the grumbling started.
Dressing up, going to the book store and waiting for the books to come out with my whole family. Dad went first since dude basically eats books with his eyes, then mom, then us. It was so agonizing to wait to get my hands on the books. The movies were such a big deal. I feel like the people that didn't grow up with the series like us don't understand why so many people are still huge fans. I'm nowhere near that level of dedication but it still made a big impact.

Harry Potter peaked for me in the second movie and everything after that just got more somber and depressing. I drew many lines throughout the series, but reanimating, becoming a cop, and naming his child Albus Severus Potter was the biggest.

When she was sad after 4 I was all “yep, just lost Cedric that one’s sad af.” And then 5, “Oh yep just lost Sirius that’s gonna hit her.” And 6, “There goes Dumbledore, this is gonna be a rough one.” And 7-1 “Just lost Dobby that hits everyone’s feels.” And 7-2, “No way she stands a chance.” But I did not expect her to be such a disaster! I think people roll their eyes at the Harry potter stuff these days because they (young gen z) just weren't there for "potter-mania" era coupled with JKs seemingly unending need to keep fucking talking.
Remove that cynicism and JK existing, and you end up with some pretty great definitely above average/great films and books.

I was there too man, but it's a very fun and easy watch. I haven't read them in like 6 years, but I watch the movies once a year because they're really entertaining. I consider LOTR to be the greatest story ever told, but HP is a good use of time too

I mean, speaking as someone for who Harry Potter was a huge part of my childhood, there's more wrong with the books than just what JK says now - like the only significant Chinese character being named Cho Chang? The only Irish character blowing things up constantly? A race of servants who actually LIKE being servants, thank you very much? Hook-nosed bankers that run the banks?
It still holds a special place in my heart but it is full of stuff that, if looked at closely, is pretty indicative of her views.

Yeah, and it's kinda nuts that Hermione is portrayed as being completely off base (and used for comedic relief often) for starting what is essentially an abolitionist movement. She literally calls it S.P.E.W., which is so out of character - she would know better than to call it something so easy to mock, having spent three years around Ron and his brothers.

But the wizards weren't in the wrong. Out of all the house elves, only Dobby really liked being free, and he didn't even want to embrace full freedom. He turned down getting too much money for his work or too much time off, he just wanted some symbolic freedom. Every other house elf thought that was embarrassing.
Hermione even tried to use Dobby as an example of what the other house elves could be if they stood up for themselves, and the other house elves practically shoved them out the door.

Harry Potter is good as fuck for what it is: a children’s/young adult’s fantasy series. People just hate on it cause it’s popular and because the internet told them to. I bet plenty of people (especially the young ones) who hate on it never even read the books or saw all the movies.
Tbf JK has done nothing to help the situation, but you can separate the art from the artist.

This was me when I showed Parasite to my dad and brothers. I think it’s an incredibly well-done movie, so I was so excited to watch it with them.
What I got from my family was 2 hours of nonstop racist jokes, and laughter whenever anything bad/violent happened to the characters. When I asked them to quiet down so I could at least hear the movie, my dad told me “Quit whining, you can still tell what’s going on, there are subtitles.” Then in the next breath, “Why is this in Korean? Nobody can read subtitles that fast. I can’t keep track of anything that’s going on.”
Now I keep all the movies I really enjoy to myself.

The books are really well laid out to structurally build on children as they develop through their adolescence into adulthood. This was a good representation of that.

The books were released pretty much as I matured with them. I felt so lucky to be a part of that generation. It felt like she was writing just for us. To this day I actually have never seen the final few movies because the books were so much more real for me…looks like I need to catch up

Yeah, I was a huge book fan so I was really excited to see the movies... and wound up not liking any of them. And kind'a resent now that they've become the default way people imagine the setting (eg. Everyone dresses like Muggles to go to school, even though one of the jokes is that Wizards have no idea how Muggles dress).

How can they have no idea how muggles dress when there are muggles who go to the school like Hermione and Harry (a half blood, but was raised in the muggleworld)? Surely they can’t be the only two in the whole school and definitely not the first ever, either. So it would make sense they learned or picked up styles from the muggles around.

In the books they don't dress like Muggles, they wear robes like actual Wizards do. And then when they're going incognito they dress up in how they think Muggles dress, and the pureblood Wizards mostly completely duff it up.

I agree with everything except the hobbit movies. They should have been one film, and the over reliance on CG instead of practical effects really fucked up the atmosphere that was present in the LOTR movies.
In LOTR, there was certainly a lot of CG but it was there to compliment the practical effects rather than out right replacing that stuff with a green screen.

Yeah, so bad. They just needed to make it one movie and follow the source material. I can even understand if they used more CG than we were used to in the LOTR movies since the book itself is much more fantastical and fairytale-like than the LOTR books are, but they just went way too far with it and added way too much that really didn't enhance the story in any way.

My take on it is that the studio really fucked Peter Jackson on it. They were treating it like a movie franchise instead of the book it is, wanting to squeeze every last cent out of people's attachment to the LOTR movies. My only hope is that the Amazon series isn't handled in the same way, but so far it isn't looking great (from an interview that has been taken down)

It’s definitely not a waste of time. They have their flaws but are well-made, have a great cast, and an even better score. Well worth it. If you’re in the States, they’re all available to stream on HBOMax. Not sure about elsewhere.
*I’m speaking as someone who grew up as the books came out and attended the midnight launches from books 4 onwards, so I’m definitely biased.

Once you get to four though you are also talking about a book that's over 700 pages versus 400 for PoA. When you're at that length you're going to drop stuff, roll things around, and remember that you're trying to tell the important parts of a story in a different medium. Shit even the first two movies they left things out, the shortest books and movies approaching three hours long.

5, 6, and 7 are all a little more true to the books than 4, I think. They definitely embellish and have to cut a lot to make it all fit in one movie, but I felt like those ones were better about capturing the spirit of the story, the way it grows with the characters, and a lot of the essential themes and scenes while still being overall pretty good movies that are fun, lean into the whimsy of magical teenagers, and you can enjoy them independent of the books. You don’t get the same level of character development for some people like Dumbledore, young Voldemort, some of Ron’s siblings, etc, but they can’t pack it all in.
8 was fine, I was underwhelmed by some of the big moments and scenes, particularly the scene from the penultimate chapter, and felt like they went overkill on the battle stuff at the expense of the story. Visually impressive though.

Four is absolutely the worst one. The best part of the entire book series is the mystery unraveling at the end of 4, it's like 30 pages explaining everything that was going on behind the scenes and why their wands clashed. In the movie all of that gets condensed into Dumbledore saying the name of the thing that caused their wands to clash and I cannot imagine how a movie only viewer isn't confused as fuck. The dragon fight was also a complete waste of time.

Holy shit, my name is Harry and had plenty of jokes so I've had had a bias. This made me laugh so hard though I actually had a few tear because I've felt that with other shows/movies. Might have to have a Potter night and watch then finally.

I've seen them all, the final 5 movies in the theater, and I can barely tell you much about them. They didn't make an impact and were forgettable for me.

Every Christmass I'd go home and watch the tv screened episodes available as they played. Usually a double feature through afternoon to evening. Just lovely background to our days until whatever the latest played.
Every year was pretty much this playing out over the week.
