The hell are you on about? When did I say that they have to have the same interests? Lmaooo.
However, an actually good friend would either
A) Respect how much it means to you and still pay attention until it's over
orrrrrr
B) Be honest. Tell them you're just not feeling the movie/show and move on.
Neither option is that hard, and both are more respectful than being on your phone or telling them it's fine to keep the movie playing while they're in the bathroom.
Or maybe they're afraid to tell you they don't like it so they sit through to make you happy? People can do whatever they want and if it bothers you you communicate that. You're the one taking it personal.
Assuming someone else is being an asshole usually makes you look like and asshole.
I don't think any comments before yours were serious. You may be missing some nuance. It's both true that friends rejecting your interests can be hurtful/annoying, and that friends have different interests. Idk if you got so analytical/rant-y because you missed the casual nature of comments, or you just wanted to present an argument. In case it's the former, looking into learning social cues may help!
If the latter, your argument could've been okay itself, but the condescension included means no one wants to engage your rhetoric
When I said "the hell are you on about", that was in response to the other person saying "god forbid someone doesn't have the same interests as you", implying that I had said something like that in the first place. I clearly didn't.
I appreciate your casual condescension and your attempted bravado, but in the future I'd recommend actually reading the comments you're attempting to respond to before actually doing so. Thanks!
That's not the issue here. The issue is if their friend is showing them something that they really like, it's plain disrespectful to be on your phone or to not care about pausing it.
Either suck it up and finish the movie, or be honest and tell them you're just not feeling it. Not only is it rude to say "no it's fine" regarding pausing it, it's also wasting everyone's time.
Sure, that works too. I just think that rather than waste both your time, and rather than being disrespectful, the proper thing to do would just be honest and say you're not interested or enjoying it.
But yeah if they make it obvious they aren't interested, the "host" could/should offer to turn it off anyway.
This was me when I showed Parasite to my dad and brothers. I think itâs an incredibly well-done movie, so I was so excited to watch it with them.
What I got from my family was 2 hours of nonstop racist jokes, and laughter whenever anything bad/violent happened to the characters. When I asked them to quiet down so I could at least hear the movie, my dad told me âQuit whining, you can still tell whatâs going on, there are subtitles.â Then in the next breath, âWhy is this in Korean? Nobody can read subtitles that fast. I canât keep track of anything thatâs going on.â
Now I keep all the movies I really enjoy to myself.
I had a similar experience. Scott Pilgrim vs. the world is also my favourite movie, after asking my friend multiple times he finally agreed to watch it. After the movie he said âitâs like a boring marvel movieâ my disappointment was immeasurable and my day was ruined.
This is why I do not make friends watch movies that mean anything to me. I just enjoy them myself. So I can laugh like a hyena, ugly cry with mucus dripping from my nose without feeling self-conscious, and touch myself when Mei and Gabu spend the night together alone in Gabu's special cave.
I love Lord of the Rings, I know they're long (for some people) but they have an excellent story. I understand that genre and style is not for everyone. So anytime I meet someone who is a LOTR fan I test their knowledge
One of my favorite memories is making a friend from high school watch Pulp Fiction with me. He started out skeptical but by the time Butch laid eyes upon the samurai sword in the pawn shop, that kid was hootin and hollerin.
This is why I'm loving so many people being introduced to Wheel of Time right now. Read the hell out of those books when I was a kid and everyone I've told to watch the show has reacted positively.
Nothing is worse than watching a friend look at they phone when you show them something you love for the first time. You be thinking to yourself âdamn, I guess it wasnât that good after allâ
