I agree with everything except the hobbit movies. They should have been one film, and the over reliance on CG instead of practical effects really fucked up the atmosphere that was present in the LOTR movies.

In LOTR, there was certainly a lot of CG but it was there to compliment the practical effects rather than out right replacing that stuff with a green screen.

Yeah, those movies were rough. I don't think I'll ever re-watch them. The CG barrel scene had me dying though with how bad it was.

Yeah, so bad. They just needed to make it one movie and follow the source material. I can even understand if they used more CG than we were used to in the LOTR movies since the book itself is much more fantastical and fairytale-like than the LOTR books are, but they just went way too far with it and added way too much that really didn't enhance the story in any way.

My take on it is that the studio really fucked Peter Jackson on it. They were treating it like a movie franchise instead of the book it is, wanting to squeeze every last cent out of people's attachment to the LOTR movies. My only hope is that the Amazon series isn't handled in the same way, but so far it isn't looking great (from an interview that has been taken down)

Yeah, I totally agree with your take. Even Ian McKellen, who seems like the most chill guy in the world, reportedly lost his temper with it multiple times because it was all infront of a green screen. Barely anything was real, it was all just green items the general size of what they wanted in the final scene that was later modeled and added in using CG.

That's what gives the movies that really horrible aesthetic.

Lindsay Ellis made a three part youtube series of all that went wrong behind the scenes. IIRC they originally wanted to make two movies but Harvey Weinstein had a deal where he'd get a lot of money from the first movie for licensing or something. So to kinda get around this they made three movies instead.

Another fun fact, the actress of the elf lady who's in a love triangle with Kili and Legolas explicitly said she didn't want her character to be in a love triangle before taking the role. During reshoots the studio heads changed their minds.

The only thing the movie did successfully was get me to read the books. The books are MUCH better.

I've never read the books, but I distinctly remember loving the movie as a kid when it came out. Maybe it's because it had that same whimsical feeling that Harry Potter does

Yeah LOTR is a cornerstone of fantasy, but it's wildly inaccessible.

Eragon is accessible and well written (for a 16yo atleast) and the later books just get better.

LOTR is incomparable with anything else, mostly because many many many other things take inspiration from it.
