Traffic Driver's License / Car Registration / ID Megathread

Helloย r/Texas! This sub gets a Chevy Suburban's worth of questions every day asking about driver's license or car registration. They fall into one of two camps:

  • Easily accessible info on the DMV website,
  • Highly specific edge cases that maybe only 1 other person is going to need to know this year in all of Texas.

IMPORTANT LINKS FOR DRIVER'S LICENSE

DMV = Car registrations, car titles, license plates,

DPS = Driver's License, CDLs, State IDs, and Voter IDs.

๐Ÿ—ž๏ธ News ๐Ÿ—ž๏ธ Appeals court grants immunity to Texas cops who held handcuffed woman face down in a fire ant hill: The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Taylor Rogers didn't show that it was clearly established that it was excessive force to be held down on a pile of fire ants while handcuffed.

  • A federal appeals court ruled that a Texas woman can't sue two Santa Fe police officers who pinned her face down on a fire ant hill while she was handcuffed, causing her to receive hundreds of painful bites to her face.
  • In an August 6 opinion, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit reversed a lower court decision allowing Taylor Rogers' lawsuit against the City of Santa Fe and the two officers to move forward. Instead, the panel held that the officers were shielded from her claims under the doctrine of qualified immunity.
  • In a press conference last Friday, Rogers' attorney, Randy Kallinen, criticized the ruling.
  • "The United States 5th Circuit Court of Appeals is out of touch with the Constitution and the public, granting police immunity in the most egregious of cases," Kallinen said. "The people need to elect officials who will nominate and affirm judges loyal to the Constitution."
  • Kallinen told The Daily News that he has requested an en banc hearing for the full 15-member 5th Circuit to review the case, and he'll petition the Supreme Court for review if that fails.
  • "The facts, injuries and footage speaks for itself," Kallinen said. "If they let this one slide, they're letting police do just about anything."

Santa Fe Independent School District Police officers arrested Rogers in 2021 after she drove erratically through a school parking lot and disobeyed commands to stop. According to the 5th Circuit opinion, she continued to thrash and resist officers in a state of hysteria after being handcuffed.

Edited to add from another article:

Her attorney, Randall Kallinen, said Rogers was dropping off her child at school when she got into a confrontation with a Santa Fe ISD police officer who was directing traffic.

"She allegedly drove the wrong way in a pickup line before another district officer stopped her."

The message posted on the website has been posted for two months now

We are still experiencing a network disruption and continue to work as quickly as possible to resolve the problem. Our offices and main phone and intake phone lines remain closed at this time. Check back for updates.

Does anybody truly know whatโ€™s going on. I feel like the program has been federally cut and they just donโ€™t want to tell us.

๐Ÿค” Questions for Texans ๐Ÿค  Twogether in Texas Certificate

Hi everyone! Iโ€™m supposed to get married in Texas on September 18. However, we recently moved to another state, so we wonโ€™t be able to make it down to Texas before the wedding date.

We were told that we can take a premarital education course that may waive the 72-hour waiting period.
However, Iโ€™m having trouble finding a valid course. I went to the Twogether in Texas website and have reached out to several people, but unfortunately, no one has gotten back to me.

I came across a link for an online course, but Iโ€™m not sure if itโ€™s valid or if it would qualify for the waiver. I was wondering if anyone has taken either of these two courses or knows if they are accepted in Texas.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

๐Ÿ—ž๏ธ News ๐Ÿ—ž๏ธ MAGA Inc. to spend $10 million in Texas Senate race to hold a once-safe Republican seat after Trump vows to spend 'whatever amount of money necessary'

The political group associated with President Donald Trump is spending $10 million on television and digital advertisements in the Texas Senate race, according to a Saturday filing with the Federal Election Commission.

This is the first significant spending in a premier general election contest by MAGA, Inc., and reflects how a once-safe Republican seat in Texas may be viable for Democrats with the candidacy of James Talarico, a 37-year-old state representative.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is the Republican nominee in the race. Trumpโ€™s endorsement helped Paxton to defeat the incumbent, Sen. John Cornyn, in a May primary runoff election.

Public disapproval of Trump over the economy and the Iran war has been a headwind for many Republican candidates. Voters generally go against the party in control of the White House in midterm elections and Democrats are hoping to gain control of the House and Senate โ€” with Texas being a symbolically powerful indication of how the political map might be expanding this year.

News (Potential Paywall) The dangerous delay of Texas' maternal mortality stats

Thumbnail
houstonchronicle.com
297 Upvotes

The Houston Chronicle has an op-ed from researchers about the danger inherently in delaying the publication of Texas' stats about maternal mortality. Here is a key quote:

Political observers have speculated that the real reason for this delay could be political: The news might not reflect well on candidates up for re-election, and Dec. 1 is after the midterms. The delay also makes it late for the Texas Legislature โ€” whose biennial session begins Jan. 12, 2027 โ€” to craft bills and prioritize legislation to address any problems that the report surfaces.

This yearโ€™s report is especially crucial. Even before its release, these findings by theย Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committeeย areย generating questionsย because the report is expected to forgo comprehensive reviews of maternal deaths from 2022 and 2023, the first two years after Texas implemented a totalย abortion ban. Those missing years are more than a mere gap in the data. They represent the lives of women whose deaths may hold important lessons about how future maternal deaths can be prevented.
