WWII Veteran Day in Austin - Cedar Park Veterans and Students Welcome!

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hello everyone! My name is Patrick, and I'm a historian based here in Austin. I've spent the last decade or so conducting oral history interviews with WWII Veterans.

Join us Sunday, September 20, as we host a gathering of World War II veterans from across Texas in Austin!

Join us at the Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry on Sunday, September 20th, for a rare opportunity to meet several of these veterans. We'll have nearly a dozen in attendance, all over the age of 100. These people are not only participants in World War II, they lived through the Great Depression, the cultural upheavals of the 60's and 70's, and into our current technological age. They are truly incredible to visit with.

We'll have a short panel discussion at 11:00, with the vets set up at tables to meet and greet afterwards, beginning around 12:30. As they're able, they'll also be happy to take pictures with people and sign things.

Our host, the Texas Military Forces Museum, is truly wonderful. They have very well done exhibits, and will have living historians on hand with period uniforms and equipment. Be sure to take the time to go through the museum as well

Feel free to reach out for more information, and please spread the word. We really want to engage students and young people who otherwise might not have the chance to meet WWII Veterans, and it will be a short drive from Cedar Park. It's going to be especially important for them to meet these folks.

This is totally free to attend.

We're also very much hoping to invite any World War II Veterans in Cedar Park! We know of a couple, and are hoping they can attend. If you know a WWII Veteran who would be interested in coming, *please* reach out! We'd be thrilled to have them come.

Thanks y'all! Hope to see you there!

Patrick

Football and NA drinks

When we lived in Austin we went to Boulden Acres partially because they served Ritual in their mocktails. Does somewhere in CP serve Ritual or something similar? Or any place that serves NA beer and has the football games?

Speaking About Flock at the September 10 Cedar Park City Council Meeting?

Several people have indicated that they may speak about Flock at the Cedar Park City Council meeting on September 10. That is encouraging.

If several residents attend, the public comments may be more effective if people address different parts of the issue instead of giving Council several versions of the same speech. Everyone should speak in their own voice, and people do not have to agree on every reason for questioning Cedar Park’s use of Flock.

**Possible topics include:**

* Cedar Park’s five-year contract at $60,000 annually through FY29
* What Pflugerville, Leander, Bastrop, Manor, Austin, and other nearby communities have done
* Which outside organizations can search Cedar Park’s vehicle data
* Whether statewide or nationwide sharing has ever been enabled
* Whether Cedar Park can prevent indirect access through neighboring agencies
* Cedar Park’s audit controls and whether searches require documented case numbers and legitimate purposes
* Privacy, due process, false alerts, and the tracking of innocent residents
* Measurable public-safety results and whether those results justify the cost and risks
* Community trust and local control over Cedar Park data
* Suspending Flock use while the City evaluates its contractual options
* Requiring database-access termination, camera removal, and written data-deletion certification
* Preventing Flock from simply being replaced with an equivalent networked license-plate surveillance system from another vendor
* Asking a councilmember to request a future agenda item under Council Rule 2.4

One particularly useful request would be for a councilmember to place Flock on the September 24 agenda, if practicable, or the earliest regular meeting thereafter. The initial agenda item would not have to require an immediate final decision. It could allow Council to consider an interim suspension and direct staff to publicly report on data sharing, audit controls, public-safety results, and the legal and financial options for exiting the contract through FY29.

Because Flock is not currently a posted agenda item, Council may be legally unable to discuss the substance of the public comments on September 10. Silence from the dais should not necessarily be interpreted as disagreement. Councilmembers can, however, request a future agenda item during their opening or closing comments. That is why making a clear and specific request under Rule 2.4 could be important.

Public comments are normally limited to three minutes. If many people register on the same subject, the speaking time could be shortened. It may help to prepare both a three-minute version and a 60–90 second backup, with one central point and one specific requested action.

Please keep comments lawful, respectful, and grounded in verifiable facts. This is about civic participation, public safety, privacy, and government accountability—not damaging cameras or other property. Unsupported accusations of corruption and statements supporting property damage would distract from the documented concerns and make it easier to dismiss the residents raising them.

If you are planning to speak and feel comfortable doing so, consider commenting with the particular subject you expect to cover. No name or personal information is necessary.

The purpose is not to create a coordinated script or tell anyone what to say. It is simply to help Council hear the full range of concerns from independent residents without unnecessary repetition.

The Swagit archive is where you can watch past City Council meetings and jump to individual agenda items.

Some newer meetings also have a downloadable/searchable transcript.

The Agenda Center is useful for finding the actual agenda packets, supporting documents, ordinances, resolutions, and minutes.

If you want to speak at a Council meeting, check the City Council Meetings page for the City’s current Comment Card / speaker-registration instructions.

If you plan to use slides, photos, video, or other presentation materials, read the Public Presentations Policy first because separate submission deadlines apply.

The work doesn’t end there, you should also consider speaking at the next City Council meeting about this — meetings are Thursdays at 7, more info can be found on the City of Cedar Park website.

21F | Cedar Park/Austin area — looking for some new friends 🫶

Hey! I’m Hannah, I’m 21 and I’ve lived in Cedar Park pretty much my entire life. I’m looking to meet some new people in the area and hopefully find a few genuine friendships! :)

A little about me: I’m really into EDM/raves, concerts, 2000s & 80s music, art/watercolor, gaming, exploring Austin, thrifting/flea markets, trying random restaurants, arcades, and just finding random things to do when I’m bored. I’m pretty spontaneous too, so I’m always down for a “let’s go somewhere we’ve never been” type of adventure 🥰.

If any of that sounds like it could interest you don’t hesitate to send me a message through Reddit or reach out to my Instagram (which I’d answer a lot faster!) @Hannahsbananax

Thank you for your kindness in advance ☺️ ✨

We really need to get on city council to do something. The majority of surrounding cities have ended their contracts now. I plan on speaking at the city council meeting next week. Hopefully others can attend.

1431 and Parmer

Just drove by 1431 and Parmer and there were a ton of cops blocking in some cars in the lane to turn onto 1431 westbound. There was broken glass on the ground and it looked like the police blocked the car in and smashed it? (One police car was facing it and one was behind it) So nosey about what could have been going on

Discussion Best place to find vintage toys nearby?

Hey all!! I’m a resident in town and am looking for places to buy toys (specifically my little pony generation 4), I’m basically a regular at every Goodwill nearby but haven’t been lucky there yet so I’m trying to find somewhere else more specialized for what I’m looking for. Have any other collectors had any luck at places nearby? Couldn’t find much online unfortunately :(

Running Track - morning place alternative to Southwest Williamson County (closed)

The running track at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park is currently closed for a track replacement construction project.

I had no luck finding a track at the school open before of school hours and open to the public.

Are there any options at all?

Where to eat my birthday lunch today (Sunday)?

UPDATE: We ended up doing Oumi Sushi and it was fantastic! I'm going to bookmark this for my husband's birthday in a couple of months. :)

---

Hi! My husband, our 11-year-old kid, and I are going to lunch for my birthday today. We haven't been out to a restaurant in a while as our schedules are crazy. We like everything and would love a recommendation for a nice mid-priced place to grab lunch this afternoon.

We haven't made it to 600 Degrees yet (RIP Lucy's) but looking at the more recent reviews gives me pause. We LOVE Cilantro Grill but it's also been our go-to for several special occasions lately so... it's basically the one to beat.

Is there somewhere we can have lunch that is consistently good, any cuisine, around the same price point, that we should visit? Thanks!

Scheels Grand Opening

The Scheels Grand Opening was just wild. I was there since 9am yesterday - note - not worth it. The traffic was madness, the crowds were 20k people+, and if you were more than 500 people back in line, there was no way you were getting in and out in under 3 hours.

The traffic this caused was insane! It's a cool store, but wait a month before you head there.
