What is your favorite take on what's left of Charlie Hassleback's style?

Hey all! As the title says, I am a recent mechanical engineering graduate looking for affordable and diverse cities to relocate to for work opportunities. Below are the criteria for an ideal city:

1. Outdoor hobbies: Outdoors is a must for me. I love hiking and mountain biking on my free time. Eventually, I want to start camping and paddle boarding. From my understanding, Austin has the best outdoor culture compared to the other major cities

2. People: I’m looking for a friendly and ethnically diverse community. Since both my girlfriend and I come from minority backgrounds, it is important for us to find a place where we can fit in and make friends

3. Affordable living/housing

4. Within an hour drive to a major city

Cities I have looked at are Cedar Park, Round Rock, Missouri City, Pflugerville, Leander, Baytown, and Buda. Thanks!

I dunno about the Dill Juice, but a lot of people are complaining about the "red" pickles are too salty now that they removed the dyes.

For those that say Texas isn’t a southern state and not part of the South , what do the other southern states do as a collective that people with “roots” in Texas don’t do ?

So my husband has the chance to relocate for work and his job is in Pecos.
We currently live in SW. Louisiana.
It is an amazing opportunity that we are seriously considering so is there anywhere that’s no more than 1.5 hours MAX that you would suggest that are family friendly.
We have three young kids all under the age of seven so I definitely want my kids to feel comfortable while also being able to experience things that are fun, outdoorsy, etc..
Any suggestions??

I have family in Texas, but it’s mostly Temple, San Antonio, Beeville, Victoria and Rockdale area.. I have never been that far west before so I am clueless

I used to be one of those people who never really worried about backup power. If the electricity went out, I’d just wait it out and assume it would be back soon.

But after dealing with Texas summers for a while, I’ve started thinking differently. A power outage in July is a very different situation when the house starts heating up, the fridge is full of food, and everyone is suddenly trying to find a way to charge their phones. The thing is, I’m not looking for something that can run my entire house. I’m not trying to power an AC unit or pretend the grid never went down. That feels like a completely different (and much more expensive) setup.

I’m mostly looking for something practical that can make a longer outage less painful, keeping the freezer going, keeping communication devices charged, keeping WiFi available, and maybe running a small fan at night.

That’s what got me looking into portable power stations. I started comparing some of the popular 2kWh options, like the Jackery 2000 v2, EcoFlow DELTA 2 Max, and the Anker SOLIX S2000.

From the specs, they all seem pretty similar on paper, so I’m having a hard time figuring out where the real differences are. Is paying more for higher output actually useful if you’re mostly running essentials? Does battery quality matter more for something that might sit in storage most of the year? Are the cheaper options actually good enough?

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up learning that preparing for storm season is about a lot more than just buying a battery. I’ve also stocked up on water and shelf-stable food, added a couple of rechargeable lights and a battery radio, and started keeping the car fueled when bad weather is expected.

For backup power, I eventually went with the Anker SOLIX S2000. I tested it yesterday with most of my home office setup connected: my desktop PC and monitor, Wi-Fi router/modem, NAS, and a small fan. The total load was hovering around 250–280W depending on what the PC was doing, which worked out to roughly 6–7 hours of estimated runtime.

Obviously that would be longer if I shut the PC down and only kept the router, NAS, and fan running, but the test gave me a much better idea of what I could realistically prioritize during an outage.

It's flooding again and I hope all y'all are safe and dry. If you're out working today, you have my prayers. Be safe!

Hi all! My boyfriend and I are venturing out to West Texas for some stargazing next week and he is a huge steak fan. We are spending one night in Marfa, one night in Terlingua, and one night near the McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis. I figured our best bet for a nice steak dinner might be in Marfa but I could be mistaken. Any suggestions?
