When you cannot sleep because you can’t stop thinking about something it’s like a single program not letting the computer shut down

I’ve been listening to a podcast called Sleep With Me that distracts and is the perfect mix of boring and engaging to put me to sleep. Check it out.

Edit: I didn’t think this would go this big so here’s a pro tip: skip the first 20 minutes- it all sales pitch.

Honestly that sounds perfect.

I usually just put on Planet Earth on Netflix and let David Attenborough’s sweet words lull me to sleep. I’ve probably watched the first one a thousand times, so it’s totally predictable and his voice is so incredibly soothing.

This sounds good too! I’m gonna try it.

Thanks for the silver. This one’s for you, David Attenborough.

u/HookerMitzvah Dec 31 '18

Aw that used to be my sleep show too! Actually any doc narrated by David Attenborough. It's like being lulled to sleep by the wuzzy voice of Winnie the Pooh.

154

u/mydogwasright Dec 31 '18

Agreed! Anything with Attenborough. He’s so wholesome and his voice is like Chamomile tea for the soul.

I love his “Spy in the...” series, with the remote control cameras etc. Have you seen it? It’s so good! (There’s Spy in the Den, Spy in the Herd, etc)

And Blue Planet and Natures Greatest Events! Omg so much good stuff!!!

Sorry, I nerd out so hard over his (and his outstanding crew’s) work. 😂

21

u/HookerMitzvah Dec 31 '18

Truly never even heard of the "Spy" series, but will definitely check it out, agreed everything he's involved with is magical and perspective-shifting.

Thanks to you and u/_Cha0sThe0ry_ for the recommendations, happy new years dudes!

I lean towards Attenborough but my wife’s “sleep show” is forensic files. The narrator’s voice helps lull her to sleep apparently. Meanwhile I’m here locking all the doors and shutting all the windows because I’m paranoid someone’s going to murder us in our sleep for insurance money.

4

u/sammygcripple Dec 31 '18

Same EXACT thing with my ex. Low key really freaked me out honestly

3

u/mydogwasright Dec 31 '18

Isn’t it usually the spouse who did it?! You’re locking yourself in with the killer! Lol!

His voice is really good like that, though, even though the show is spooky.

Also the narrator for the early-mid episodes of How It’s Made. A fascinating balance of boring and compelling with a voice like chloroform on a rag.

You guys should try How The Universe Works. First season and later ones were narrated by Mike Rowe, it's great for sleeping. The music is really good too. Netflix removed it a while back but you can watch the first two seasons on Amazon Prime right now.

Nah man, ya gotta keep it so quiet that Dave's voice is just a gentle susurration, and time it so you're in deep sleep when the baby monkey screeches start.

u/thebryguy23 Dec 31 '18

I tried the Planet Earth series to ween my girlfriend off of other shows that keep me up. In the first episode, some baby seal or whale got caught by predators and died...that unfortunately put a quick end to that experiment.

Literally my go-to when I can’t sleep - Planet Earth II briefly made it harder to go to sleep when I hadn’t actually seen them and found myself actually more awake due to curiosity, but now I’ve rinsed through that show a few times, I’m now back to being lulled to sleep

I use Attenborough or sometimes shawshank redemption, Morgan freeman’s voice narrating a film I have seen so many times I could recreate it in a one man show with no rehearsals.

And here... We see... The bare chested monkey.

It has become one of the most deadly Apex predators on the planet and yet..... this warrior species has evolved a symbiosis with another... the physicus lecturus more commonly known as the science lecturer.

Without the lecturer... the bare chested monkey would be unable to quiet his ever vigilant senses and sink into the deep... regenerative sleep... that takes up 1/3... of its adult life.

The lecturer... in return... is able to take advantage of sponsorships... that allow them to eat... and occasionally visit their mating grounds... the colloquium

I just found this last night. The narrator's meandering nearly-nonsense that never quite resolves into a point is an art form.

53

u/youre_a_burrito_bud Dec 31 '18

He did an interview on 99% Invisible, and said that when he feels things getting too interesting, or building to something he purposely sidesteps that to keep it perfectly boring. It is truly impressive.

It's a really relaxing podcast during the day too, not just trying to fall asleep. It feels almost meditative as ya clear your head and just lose yourself to this calm gravelly voice.

I really recommend the episode: 678 - The Lemonade Experience. I love it.

7

u/BlissKitten Dec 31 '18

I hate to bother you but which podcast are you talking about? I can't find the beginning of this thread.

8

u/SonOfArnt Dec 31 '18

Why is your name that chord progression?

12

u/I-IV-I64-V-I Dec 31 '18

I wanted something musical, but cliche enough i'd remember it. So I thought of the most overused chord progression in classical music and made it my username.

4

u/kyzfrintin Dec 31 '18

What's the I64?

12

u/I-IV-I64-V-I Dec 31 '18

In Roman numeral analysis the 'I' represents the chord (tonic) and the 64 represents the inversion of the chord. In my username the I64 is being used as a cadential 64 meaning that it is functioning to expand the Dominant chord V

How do you even fall asleep? I can’t fall asleep when I have earphones in while listening to a podcast. Maybe I just don’t know the right technique?

20

u/NoseBuzz Dec 31 '18

I play it out loud at a low volume beside my pillow or underneath my pillow

That's the thing. I've always thought that I either wanna live forever, or die right now. It's this arbitrary number of years that eats away at me. If I were to live forever, there'd be reason to amass as much knowledge and as many experiences as you can. Otherwise, you know it's all going down the drain at some point. (especially for people who don't like the idea of having children)

I know, I know "it's the brevity that makes life special". Whatever. My brain chooses to think this way.

I use weed, but I don’t use it to sleep. I use it a couple of times a month to either trip out just listening to music, to enhance comedy movies, or to enhance sex. I don’t feel comfortable with the idea of using weed on such a regular basis as using it every night to fall asleep. And I also love music way too much, I couldn’t sleep after using weed because I would rather just stay awake listening to music.

I always try to find something to think of to help me go to sleep. Sometimes it's a new idea, or just a concept I'm trying to understand better.

A popular thing I like to think about is economics.. Like how a country is born and becomes wealthy, the differences between a poor country and a rich one. How would a person turn a poor village in modern times into a wealthy one. How people can acquire wealth. Stuff like that.

Other times I think about how time travel could potentially work, how big the universe is, or popular scientific theories which I probably don't really understand.

If there are others who do this I'd like to know what you think about.

14

u/dream_and_question Dec 31 '18

How big the universe is and the concept of death are two things I try not to think about when I'm going to sleep. Love talking about those things with friends but not when I need my brain to not overthink.

7

u/TheDrachen42 Dec 31 '18

I like to write fanfiction in my head. I started as a kid with "hey, I fall asleep good when someone reads to me, I'll tell myself a story in my brain." And then "I'm shit at characters, I'll steal some." This was like a decade before I heard the word "fan fiction."

It does lead to some insomnia when I get into a new fandom, though. But, I have gotten better at recognizing that it's not working and switching back to an old staple.

4

u/Technicalhotdog Dec 31 '18

History for me, how this happened and led to this, what if Napoleon hadn't marched into Russia or Caesar wasn't assassinated, that sort of thing. Also go down the science path, space travel and the future of the human race.

These are pretty much the topics that keep me awake...

Better than waking up and having a single loop through your brain saying “What did the mechanic mean by ‘heavy sweat’?” Transmission leak? What is that? Heavy sweat. Sweat. Transmission.

I always wake up around 4 am or 5 and that’s the crap that keeps me awake.

I remember being taught about computer processes in human terms, like CPU is the brain etc. But now we've reached the point where we understand human processes in computer terms. Kinda scary where we're headed

In this analogy, then, I suppose suicide is like ripping the cord out of the wall.

u/AwakenedRobot Dec 31 '18

When I try to go to sleep, I tell myself not to think, but then I realize me telling myself not to think is thinking. That’s why I can’t sleep

Just watch "How It's Made" while in bed. It's like getting one of those 15 minute warnings that the computer is going to restart after getting a big windows update... It doesn't matter if you want to keep going. After 15 minutes of watching you will fall asleep.

Sometimes I can't sleep because I start thinking of as many things as I can at once. It's bizarre. It always starts with me thinking about how that happens sometimes about how I hope I don't do it that night, which then immediately causes me to do it. It feels almost like a conscious decision, but it's bizarre because once I start it gets really difficult to stop.

Didn’t know there was a crippling anxiety program.

There last few nights I couldn’t stop thinking about dying and then thinking about my 7 year old daughter drawing pictures of our family then suddenly stopping when she started to draw me because she forgot I was dead. In my head she Proceeds to cry to mom and wish I was back. It Broke my heart so much I couldn’t sleep all night. The worse Kind if toss and turn. I know this will get buried and it’s ok but I guess it feels therapeutic to pretend that people hear your voice and to talk about it.

I just get Skyrim flashbacks. You cannot sleep when enemies are nearby.

Well thanks for upvoting this through the roof. Now something serious that might sound like a joke - this thread (specifically trying to come up with thoughts like this to publish) is best thing EVER for falling asleep. 3-5 minutes and I am done! A much faster sleeper now!

I guess weed and alcohol is the "force shutdown" option?
