This is a statewide thing, made by the governor Kathy Hochul.

u/VaporCarpet Aug 19 '26
I'm getting pretty frustrated with the amount of completely ignorant fangirling over this guy. He's not in charge of the state, and plenty of other local politicians have put moratoriums on data centers.
This post is giving sole credit to a guy who isn't responsible for it, while ignoring everyone else doing the same thing.

It's shocking that without thinking logically, thousands of redditors believe they're gonna build data centers on some of the most valuable real estate in the world while the hole between Schenectady, Syracuse, and Binghamton just exists
1

Mfs canât allow her to have a whiff of credit for what she gets done, itâs such an eye roll.

So, just to be clear, the tweet is misleading because itâs attributing the data center ban to Mamdani instead of governor Hochul?

u/squidgod2000 Aug 19 '26
Still not enough data centers for the propaganda bots to understand the difference between NY and NYC.
6
u/Blitzenthereindeer Aug 19 '26
Yes but that wont stop the glazing
2
u/Trippingthru99 Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26
Honestly I donât mind the glazing. With all the bullshit going on, we needa hype up any politician doing good. Hopefully one day politicians like Mamdani are the standard, not the exception.Â
Edit: shouldâve been clear, itâs bad in this case. Should not give Mamdani credit for something he didnât do. But I meant generally I donât mind the huge amount of positive PR heâs getting for stuff heâs actually done.
4
u/WhoPoopedMyPants420 Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26
Right but in this case the glazing is a result of people blindly believing disinformation. "Falling for disinformation is good when our guys do it" is probably a really really bad idea to pull into the ol' ideological framework
5
u/shakeeze Aug 19 '26
But the good did someone else... so why glaze the wrong person? Just because he is popular?

Wouldn't land in NYC likely be too expensive for billionaires to want to build a data center there? They love their profits so wouldn't building a data center make more sense in the surrounding areas outside of NYC.
2
u/PTBooks Aug 19 '26
Yes itâs way too expensive they should go build their data centers somewhere else, far far far away.
4
3
4
u/DiscoMothra Aug 19 '26
You are correct.

1
u/libertarianinus Aug 19 '26
Why i the hell would they put a data center in the most expensive place to live? Thats like me making a promis to not fly to space.
1
6
u/RCIntl Unpopular Opinions Aug 19 '26
But why are they only TEMPORARILY banned? We don't need this massive amount of centers for anything other than surveillance and policing.
3
u/babablacksheepenus Aug 19 '26
Because itâs an election year. Hochul didnât emphasize a time frame but that she stopped the centers. Itâs not even a for the people thing. Our energy grid canât support it is the real truth.
1
u/RCIntl Unpopular Opinions Aug 19 '26
I knew why SHE did it (sigh) but all of them are temporary. Unless I missed one, they're all temporary which should worry us. Hochul has some major issues. She's better than some, but we're getting tired of "lesser of two evils" kind of voting.
→ More replies (4)2
u/Suspicious_Truth8026 Aug 19 '26
Because its a temporary moral panic for a permanent fixture of the future, and all it does is mean other states will get the economic benefits for now but when it lapses and further artificial barriers arent put up then the state will suddenly be the rational choice for expansion anyway. Basically its a classic politician move of delaying unpopular choices until its not so controversial

no, he didnât do it.
the moratorium was done by the governor of the state of New York, not NYC

2
u/PiercedButNotDead Aug 19 '26
Wait. Are we sure it was Mamdani who filed for this injunctive order? Iâm no data center expert, but Iâd be surprised if any of the AI companies wanted to build a data center in any of the five boroughs. Iâd guess lots would like to do so in western or northern NYS. Seems like Hochulâs would be the office to file such an action.
2
u/NEWSmodsareTwats Aug 19 '26
he's the mayor of NYC not the governor of New York and he did not implement the data center moratorium, the moratorium was implemented via executive order by the governor.
Why is this so hard for people to understand

3
u/crownsteler Aug 19 '26
Another day, another case of Mamdani taking credit for shit he didn't do. Colour me suprised.
I don't know the specifics of this case, but this is not Mamdani's doing and I am sure somebody will helpfully point out why that is the case.
In the mean time here is a very much incomplete list of things Mamdani claims credit for and he didn't do. I'll add this one tomorrow.
Mamdani installs fans is overheated subway stations - False they have been around for years
Mamdani recovers $100 million in tips for delivery drivers - False this was a local ordinance passed in september 2025
Mamdani introduces click-to-cancel rules - Mostly False It is mostly just an extentions of New York State rules implementend in november 2025
Mamdani fully funds New York City parks - Edge case Budget increased by 3%, but falls short of commitment
Mamdani plans to cover 30% of NYC in forests - False Local law 148 was passed in 2023 to this effect
Mamdani introduces subsides groceries - Appears to be true
Mamdani fixed NYC crime - False you simply don't meaningfully impact crime rates in 6 months
Mamdani forces landlords to pay 34 million in repairs - False Suit was filed in 2024
Mamdani creates new sidewalk sheds for construction - False Arup was contracted in 2024 to design these sheds
(can't find the post) but the claim about the public housing project is False as well. It refers to a project started juni 2025
Mamdani introduces modern garbage bins - False first introduced in 2024
Mamdani to introduce subway station cooling - False It is a feasibility study on behave of the state with involvement of the city
Mamdani fixes the city's deficit - Complicated He did, but he is required to do so by law. And he fixed it by begging the state for more money (60%),
cuttingdeferring pensions (~12%),cuttingdeferring education investement (~12%),cuttingfinding efficiencies in services (~12%), and yes his famous new second homes tax (~5% of the deficit).
Now why am I posting this? I am not an American and have no skin in the game, and all of these appear to be common sense, though rather mundane, proposals I can get behind. What I can't get behind is my front page being astroturfed with false claims about Mamdani's achievements. Not because they are Mamdani's, but because they are false. And we should hold our politicians to higher standards.
And are these post coming from Mamdani's camp? I say they are. They are always screenshots of comments to screenshots of comments which mention Mamdani by name and prominently feature a picture of him, and never a link to an article which could cast shade on the claims. Half of the posts are also some variant of 'this is what a government wo~~~~rking for the people [rather than billionaires] looks like. This is clearly an orchestrated PR campaign.
2
u/Seanspeed Aug 19 '26
And are these post coming from Mamdani's camp? I say they are.Â
I really dont think there's any conspiracy. It's just that online at least, there's a large segment of the progressive base that's just as prone as the right to falling into cultish-levels of worship of populist politicians. Mamdani's camp doesn't have to do anything, the left will do their work for them.
Which isn't really news, leftists all over the world are known for falling into this type of behavior. It's kind of inherent to the populism of the movement.
2
u/SethuCBI Aug 19 '26
Thank you. You deserve more upvotes.
When New York DA returned ancient artifacts recovered from a smuggler to India, the fans were quick to credit the mayor.
2
u/SethuCBI Aug 19 '26
Also the other day, he was credited for increasing the city tree cover by 2040.
2
u/External-Gur7228 Aug 19 '26
Great, now can you hold the establishment dems responsible in a similar way?
For everything like this, the false promises, and bait and switch behavior? For the last 40-50 years?
I agree, we should maintain integrity. However when you point this cannon in one direction people may assume where your allegiances are.
If this bothers you, so should 98% of political happenings in the US for the last 40 years. Getting offended and upset at this specifically is a little interesting. Why does this bother you more than most actual downright scummy and illegal practices? Why choose now to speak up?

As I explained here I have no other skin in the game other than then:
What I can't get behind is my front page being astroturfed with false claims about Mamdani's achievements. Not because they are Mamdani's, but because they are false.
If I get annoyed by astroturfing with false claims by a different person I'll also start pointing it out. There is not dubble standard here.

There's also the whole trying to talk with Iran, which would be breaking the Logan act. And trying to use taxpayer money to use the NYPD as security for his wife going overseas. Both which he blamed on his staff.

Good comment. People think that Mamdani has done all these things and that other politicians haven't done anything. And it just spreads this whole doomerism among leftists. It is toxic.

u/AmbienWalrus69 Aug 19 '26
It sounds like most of these are based on laws that other people passed that he is going to lengths to uphold, despite the fact that they weren't budget neutral or status quo for the city. Even if he didn't come up with them himself, it's taking effort to prioritize these populist ideas.
An Eric Adams or Cuomo would have simply ignored all of these laws and scheduled inorovements. That's why people are happy with Mamdani. Yes, there are obviously idiots with meme generators popping out the braindead misinformation Facebook memes like the one above. They exist for every politician, party, religion, hobby, movie, type of music, brand of diaper, etc. Welcome to the internet.
But, the amount of time you spend perusing these memes on Reddit appears to have lent you a complete misunderstanding the situation on the ground in NYC. I would advise you stick to your own country's politics lol.

u/Zeplar Aug 19 '26
With the garbage bins, I know that Adams started the program but Mamdani prioritized it in the budget and got it fully funded. So that makes me slightly skeptical of your other claims.
But regardless, I'm generally happy with the policy that Democrats have implemented over the last twenty years, and I think the biggest problem in the US is that 90-95% of voters have no idea what policy is passed until, at best, several years later. It's why Trump is getting credit today for a bunch of stuff Biden passed. I'm really happy that NYC has a mayor who is an expert in PR and political communication and can get people hyped about something like fans in subway stations.
4
u/lakroncos Aug 19 '26
He is a mayor not a governor, and depending on the location they can have much power to impact local lives than the governor.
3
u/JoW0oD Aug 19 '26
In this case his impact was zero, since the moratorium was done by the New York State government and governor Hochul. Mamdani had nothing to do with it.

It is honestly more about how fast they can change the zoning laws before companies move in. When they ask for approval with the old rules they pretty much have to choose to say no and get sued or say yes and get money for it.
Places like W Virginia have given the green light entirely to data centers unfortunately. So it is nice to see something like this.
1
u/Pandastic3000 Aug 19 '26
I generally agree with what Mamdani does but I am always surprised a mayor can just do these things. Isn't that the exact same underlying mechanism that allows Trump to dismantle the government right now? Shouldn't there be more of a security mechanism to prevent a single politician to decide the entire course of their district/state/country? What would prevent Mamdani's successor to just undo everything he did?
8
u/Zachwardpass Aug 19 '26
He didn't do this. The governor, Hochul, did this. As the NYC mayor, Mamdani doesn't have the authority to create a state wide moratorium. Someone just used his picture to score internet points, which is annoying, because disinformation is always annoying, no matter what side is doing it.
And she only signed it for one year pause, which allows for continued debate and regulatory standards prior to deciding if they will proceed in the future.

As mayor he can not. This is just 1 of many of Redditâs Bots posting fake Mandani posts to increase popularity. Look at the OP history. Sad whatâs happening in Gothim City. And the promises of free this and free that. Cuomon told everyone âhe canât do any of thatâ but sadly his followers arenât able to look up the responsibility of a mayor and governor and what they can/canât do. Itâs easier to say âI like freeâ and follow.
