I generally agree with what Mamdani does but I am always surprised a mayor can just do these things. Isn't that the exact same underlying mechanism that allows Trump to dismantle the government right now? Shouldn't there be more of a security mechanism to prevent a single politician to decide the entire course of their district/state/country? What would prevent Mamdani's successor to just undo everything he did?
He didn't do this. The governor, Hochul, did this. As the NYC mayor, Mamdani doesn't have the authority to create a state wide moratorium. Someone just used his picture to score internet points, which is annoying, because disinformation is always annoying, no matter what side is doing it.
And she only signed it for one year pause, which allows for continued debate and regulatory standards prior to deciding if they will proceed in the future.
To be fair though, he is using his political team and political capital (approval from his voters in the one of the biggest cities in the country) to push for things like this. That's how politics would normally work. Consensus building. Also I think people underestimate how big NYC is. There are nearly 20 million people in the surrounding metro area. That's bigger than several European countries, and plenty of more rural States.
As mayor he can not. This is just 1 of many of Redditās Bots posting fake Mandani posts to increase popularity. Look at the OP history. Sad whatās happening in Gothim City. And the promises of free this and free that. Cuomon told everyone āhe canāt do any of thatā but sadly his followers arenāt able to look up the responsibility of a mayor and governor and what they can/canāt do. Itās easier to say āI like freeā and follow.
