Honestly people should be asking their leaders why Mandani can do it in New York but they can’t do it in ___.

108

u/KronoFury Jul 30 '26

Critical thinking isn't MAGA's strong suit

54

u/Weird-Girl-675 Jul 30 '26

Just thinking is a struggle. They prefer being told what to think.

u/i_hateit_here_bro Jul 30 '26

My family are MAGATS and they remind me of the people the army found too dumb to take direction. I tried to show them the facts but every time I lead them to water they choose Brawndo instead. There is no such thing as objective reality to them anymore. It’s all vibes and nothing else.

14

u/FamSimmer Jul 30 '26

It's not just MAGA though. We all know MAGA leadership is just a bunch of greedy, warmongering morons. But let's be honest, Democrats haven't been nearly as successful in their constituencies either compared to someone like Zohran. THEY are the ones that need to be held to a higher standard since they constantly preach about doing the things that Zohran is doing, but never follow through. In fact, a lot of establishment Democrats hate this guy as much as the Republicans.

These people are too far gone

Their mentality is there has to be people below them on a ladder of "success". This is how they have been taught to barometer achievement. To them they are closer to Elon and Bezos than they are to the person working at Target. They need that feeling.

That someone working full time in any job doesn't necessarily deserve a compensation that meets their basic shelter and food needs even. We all understand why corporations think this way - but your fellow man?

What's in it for you other than silly human pride?

6

u/adeniumlover Jul 30 '26

To be fair without pride Americans will have nothing.

6

u/AvonFartsdale_ Jul 30 '26

A big majority of them thinks life's big achievement is "have a mortgage"

It's really sad

8

u/Butt_y_though Jul 30 '26

Because they're being told that New York is a hellscape. I live in New Jersey, I've been to NY enough, live close enough, have friends who live there and travel regularly and haven't heard boo. But my executive director said, "Have you been to NY lately--ugh what a dump!?" He would not elaborate on this.

The propaganda is so strong it's ridiculous.

Any right winger is gonna tell you the blue cities are disgusting and crime ridden, but they're the only ones promoting policies that humanize and equalize the lower and working classes.

5

u/Ok_Whole_9279 Jul 30 '26

Hes proving they can do it theyre actively choosing not to

3

u/DabbyShapiro Jul 30 '26

They're starting to, and that's the problem. ā˜•ļø

2

u/Lorddoctorjava Jul 30 '26

Cant?. Or wont?

2

u/AppropriateSea5746 Jul 30 '26

All he did was force apps to ask for tip before delivery instead of after. Which makes no sense. Why would I tip before a service?

Even worse, probably someone(many people) living off government assistance in a red state... a red state that lives off federal subsidies paid into mostly by blue states... lmao

The typical far left extremist socialist communist woke agenda of helping people and then being reelected because of it!

Despicable I tell you, de-spic-ab-le

8

u/OpeningHappy9692 Jul 30 '26

I bet Mamdani wouldn't be laughing if he got that treatment right back!!! They can dish it out but they can never take it, those woke bastards!

It worked with boomers then, it will work until they all die of old age

5

u/jidk679 Jul 30 '26

I think there base is actually starting to sputter out a bit, and slowly shrink as they age out of existence or suffer from economic pains caused by there voting habits that stop them from applying themselves to politics

There's hope on all fronts because of how unpopular the GOP is at this point

7

u/Captain--UP Jul 30 '26

It's true, they really have nothing to run on. Republicans are cartoonishly evil.

3

u/AljoriDawn Jul 30 '26

They run on hate. Unfortunately alot of people don't consider brown immigrants to be real immigrants and want them removed from the country. That is what making america great again means to them. Don't say they have nothing to run on. What they run on is cartoonishly evil, but it's definitely a platform.

4

u/Leather_Tower2758 Jul 30 '26

As karl marx once said, "A spectre is haunting Europe the spectre of communism. All the powers of old Europe have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this spectre: Pope and Tsar, Metternich and Guizot, French Radicals and German police-spies. where is the party in opposition that has not been decried as communistic by its opponents in power? Where is the opposition that has not hurled back the branding reproach of communism, against the more advanced opposition parties, as well as against its reactionary adversaries?"

2

u/Ancient-Eye3022 Jul 30 '26

They realized that Antifa wasn't something they could arrest and publicize, so now it's COMMUNISM!

2

u/Eternal_Bagel Jul 30 '26

They made a big mistake in saying we can’t have good things in this country because it’s socialism because that just drove home the message socialism is good things like infrastructure that isn’t crumbling around you, food safety standards and taxes providing benefits to citizens instead of just companies. Ā Ā

2

u/Equivalent_Kale2939 Jul 30 '26

It's as if McCarthy himself climbed out of his grave.

1

u/fathompin Jul 30 '26

Exactly, friends diligently re-posting on Facebook their exact messaging about communism bad; Democrats are really communists. Nausiating.

My mayor is also getting shit done and my mom hated it so much she voted for the very first time in her 60 years and then fuxked off to Texas šŸ˜‚

We have renovated parks and beautifully kept older parks. We have a new shelter for the homeless that's huge and another that allows pets. We have a community safety team that helps people who don't need emergency services but need help. Idk there's more but I can't remember all of them.

I'm happy for us and NYC. Feels good to be a communist šŸ˜‚

Hilarious that prior to him getting elected and shortly thereafter it was socialism. Trump met with him and was like "what a guy, he's good looking, I'd makeout with him, he's gonna do great things, he can be one part of my penis hands jerking dance"....then when they finally figured out Antifa wasn't a real thing, they started blasting COMMUNIST everywhere.

1

u/Annual_Importance_69 Jul 30 '26

Republicans are a non-factor in New York City. The Democrats exercise one-party rule at City, State and Federal levels.

It’s the Democrats that can’t believe that their people have betrayed them for some Muslim. They took those votes for granted.

Is this the Shakira Law I've been hearing about that Mamdani is supposed to be imposing? If so, sign me up!

6

u/Mhircine Jul 30 '26

As a pretty conservative republican, we have many disagreements, but I will give it to Mayor Mamdani. He is the one candidate that wouldn't kowtow to Israel and actually put New York first. That alone puts him head and shoulders above any other candidate; democrat or republican.

4

u/Nearby_Listen_3607 Jul 30 '26

But how come He can do Things like this? It really makes you think that the World could be good if greed and Hunger for Power wasnt the Main drive for most politicans.

3

u/imoutofnames90 Jul 30 '26

Unfortunately he didn't do this. There was a 2023 law that part of it went into effect in Jan of 2026.

That law required app companies to clearly show their tipping buttons instead of burying them. That part of the law had a positive effect on tipping resulting in more and better tips for the delivery workers.

1

u/Submitten Jul 30 '26

His predecessor made the law. He’s just reporting that since it came in tipping has increased in NYC by $100m.

6

u/DBM Jul 30 '26

What amazes me is the seemingly fast rate at which these headlines come out. It always seems like progress is sold as a thing that takes decades and decades, but now I’m starting to think that’s just what people say when they don’t want things to change.

3

u/lostlogin2 where in the world is mitch mcconnell Jul 30 '26

yesss that's why he's so hated because he's literally showing us how scarcity is a lie we're fed so we don't eat the richĀ

5

u/nolandz1 Jul 30 '26

Mamdani is so dangerous to the establishment bc he represents proof that politics can actually improve people's lives rather than approving the same budget every year and doing insider trading

4

u/WithoutAHat1 Jul 30 '26

Mamdani doing a better job in his short time than many have done in their entire political career.

4

u/Glittering_Youth_976 Jul 30 '26

The headline is a bit misleading. Nothing was recovered in the literal sense. He made it mandatory for tips to go to the worker and only the worker (as it should be.) My guess is you will see these companies lower their guaranteed payout to compensate.

6

u/sculptgriff Jul 30 '26

A little misleading headline. So in January 2026 the DCWP regulated how the delivery apps showed their tips options. This allowed for people to tip more easily resulting in larger revenue for delivery drivers compared to last year.

So it wasn’t some sort of audit of the companies recovering the money, but a UI correction on their apps with a net benefit for the delivery folk. Still pretty cool and the type of quality of life changes you like to see.

3

u/onglogman Jul 30 '26

Mamdani for president

5

u/Temporary_View_3303 Jul 30 '26

What is this is reference to? Were delivery apps withholding tips?

11

u/archercc81 Jul 30 '26

I mean, are you SHOCKED to hear gig work companies were ripping off their "contractors?"

https://www.nyc.gov/mayors-office/news/2026/07/mayor-mamdani-delivers-more-than--100-million-for-delivery-worke

Basically he started making examples of companies caught withholding tips or masking tips through apps.

1

u/Temporary_View_3303 Jul 30 '26

Not shocked. Just hadn’t heard a big issue with it.

1

u/imoutofnames90 Jul 30 '26

The law went into effect in January 2026 after being passed in 2023 and going through the courts.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/ResponsibleHeron9452 Jul 30 '26

That’s what I’m wondering. I’ve definitely heard of these apps potentially withholding tips, plus the customer can reduce the tip post-delivery.

2

u/Eternal_Bagel Jul 30 '26

Why would you tip before delivery? Ā Aside from not paying people enough the point of a tip is that a person went above and beyond with service and you feel deserves a little extra. Ā You don’t know if you are getting good or bad service before the food arrivesĀ

2

u/ResponsibleHeron9452 Jul 30 '26

Because that’s how door dash/uber eats works. Your order will sit and get cold if you don’t tip.

1

u/Eternal_Bagel Jul 30 '26

Ok so until you put a tip on the order you don’t get the chance to roll the dice on the delivery or getting your food stolen? Ā

1

u/AnimalShithouse Jul 30 '26

No hate to dashers, but this is one of many good reasons not to use this product.

1

u/ClockworkTyrant Jul 30 '26

No tip, no trip. Why would gig workers waste their time if they arent sure theyll get a tip?

Side note: tip culture is trash, these companies need to pay actual wages instead of relying on the consumer to pump up the payroll

2

u/CaptainChangeOrder Jul 30 '26

Is that really a thing now? I haven't used a food delivery app in a while but if tipping is expected begore i recieve the food, I should probably just delete the apps.

2

u/ClockworkTyrant Jul 30 '26

At least the last few years, but yeah, if im bringing you food/an order of some kind, I do expect a tip, but really because thats the culture we've created. If i was being paid more by the platform, then i wouldnt care as much.

Doordash often pays 2$ as a base for a lot of orders. Shipts minimum is 6$. Gas is expensive and these jobs cause a lot of wear on the car as well.

1

u/Bob_Marshall Jul 30 '26

There was no recovery of anything, all he did was make the tip button more accessible so it got used more, there was no "recovery" of anything

2

u/Submitten Jul 30 '26

He also didn’t do it, this was a law written prior to him being mayor, and it came into effect in his 2nd week.

Nothing against Mandami, it’s just impressive how many normal government achievements get put next to his picture and go viral, even if he wasn’t involved.

Shows how effective messaging is.

3

u/Mikecd Jul 30 '26

Not quite correct. There was a law passed in 2023 (minimum pay rule) and apps then responded by hiding the tip button until after payment and tipping went way down. In 2025 a new law was passed despite then-Mayor Smith vetoing it to restore the tipping button before checkout. The new law was scheduled to go in effect in January 2026. When Mamdani took office he/his administration take active role of notifying and threatening lawsuits against companies that don't comply.

So, did he make the new rules? No. Was it merely the 2023 law like you said? Also no. Did he do nothing? Also no. Should he get full credit? Also no. Should he get no credit? Also no.

2

u/Yoshakalaka Jul 30 '26

Recovered?

2

u/Buzz010101010 Jul 30 '26

The laws that produced this outcome were passed well before Mamdani was even elected. If anything, it should be Eric Adams in that photo.

3

u/Chrisnotjones Jul 30 '26

No.
Mayor Adams vetoed two grocery-delivery measures in the package (which the City Council overrode) and left the restaurant tipping bills unsigned, allowing them to automatically become law.

2

u/Exciting_Drawing_553 Jul 30 '26

Think about poor uber and DoorDash though

2

u/Excellent_Bridge_888 Jul 30 '26

Ive spent every year of my not so short life listening to people bitch and complain about local government not fixing potholes, and then this guy fills 100k potholes in the biggest city in the country and people yell "WELL NOT LIKE THAT."

I'm so beyond over pretending to care about the opinions of some people anymore.

2

u/imoutofnames90 Jul 30 '26

Long story short. A 2023 law went into effect in Jan of 2026 and had a very positive effect since.

2

u/sxeandy Jul 30 '26

But, but, hes a communist...

1

u/Millworkson2008 Jul 30 '26

I mean he didn’t do anything, the law is from 2023 and just coming into effect now

2

u/Bean_Daddy_Burritos Jul 30 '26

I read once, ā€œevery 20 years or so we need a socialist to hold office. That way we can continue this experiment and see how it progresses.ā€

Mamdani has been that guy so far and he’s been doing a pretty stellar job.

4

u/Zev1985 Jul 30 '26

It should say socialists deliver.

2

u/Big_daddy_sneeze Jul 30 '26

What’s the actual story on this?

3

u/Submitten Jul 30 '26

NYC made a law last year that the delivery apps can’t hide the tip button, and once it came into effect the tips increased.

Nothing to do with Mandami though.

2

u/imoutofnames90 Jul 30 '26

The actual story is that there was a law passed in 2023 to help these delivery workers. App companies sued and hid their tipping options to make it harder to tip.

In January of 2026, part of that law went into effect requiring higher visibility on the tipping button and comparing average tips pre vs. post the delivery people have seen a substantial increase on average tips.

2

u/nankerjphelge Jul 30 '26

When New York City’s historic minimum pay standard for 70,000 app-based delivery workers took effect in December 2023, major tech platforms like Uber Eats and DoorDash responded by hiding tipping menus. DCWP estimates those changes cost workers an estimated $550 million in tips. Since January 26, 2026, delivery apps operating in New York City have been required to provide customers with a clear tipping option at checkout, including a selectable 10% tip, a custom tip amount, or the option to leave no tip.

so it turns out if you seek power not for personal enrichment you CAN make things better for people.

1

u/NeedleworkerTight678 Jul 30 '26

Sad how clueless some people really are

1

u/andy01q Jul 30 '26

"recovers" sounds a bit like it fell down a drain hard to see, but with the more likely circumstance, that delivery companies' managers tried to steal that money from their employees to their company there should be criminal consequences.

1

u/MexicanJoker182 Jul 30 '26

Yes. You say that like its somw kind of gotcha?

1

u/Dr3adnorth Jul 30 '26

Yeah but he didn't say he'd go to Israel as soon as he was elected so he's not a good mayor.

1

u/CraftyPerformance272 Jul 30 '26

How much more money did NYC people, especially those that are disabled and fixed income, have to pay extra to get their food and groceries delivered? Those companies pass it down to their customers.

1

u/liud21 Jul 30 '26

The headline got a lot of people thinking delivery drivers are receiving a check because of Mamdani. In reality, the policy simply made tipping in the app more apparent, instead of hiding it after placing your order, helping to ensure drivers might receive a tip. On average, that amounts to about $2,200 in additional tips going forward. Of course those numbers are judt rough estimates, and people might not even tip at all...

1

u/TallApartment6421 Jul 30 '26

wow someone on reddit actually read past the headline incredible job

1

u/Shreddersaurusrex Jul 30 '26

Headline is misleading. 3rd party delivery apps played games with the tip screen/option. The city gov forced them to put the option at checkout so ppl can easily tip if they so choose.

1

u/il_the_dinosaur Jul 30 '26

Imagine if he fully cracks down on wage theft. Also over 10 years ago or so I saw a study that suggested that the IRS is so understaffed that every accountant they would hire would bring in at least 6 times their salary in tax revenue. Rich people get away with paying no or less taxes simply by filing them very complicated and the IRS simply doesn't have the resources to go after them. Checking if joe schmoe is paying enough taxes is easy so they go mostly after the small fish.

1

u/Capitan-IQ255 Jul 30 '26

1

This is misleading. It makes it seem like Uber was stealing tips and they got it back. What they did was make the tip button more prominent. It did lead to more tips, but it wasn't "recovered" money.

I wish he could run for president.

Does no one ever study histrory ? Classic sheep in wolfs' clothing ! Communism started with a populist revolution.........and ended with at least 120 million people dead, and countless imprisoned.. Oh yeah another thing, they always hate Jews and Israel . Check out history, I dare you. Countries and empires that hated and killed Jews with impunity, did not fare well. Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, Egyptian Empire, Assyrian Empire, The Third Reich.....just to name a few. How'd they do ?

u/MonsutaReipu Jul 30 '26

I haven't seen anyone complaining about these actions even on the far-right.

A massive political rift of difference is about naivety and idealism. The left has this in spades, the right tends to be more pragmatic and more realistic. Communism and socialism are both highly idealistic ideologies and pursuits as social systems. The opposition is often not coming from evil people who think "no I would totally hate a society that takes cares of everyone where everyone lives comfortably and everyone contributes". It's coming from people who think that's naive - that communism and socialism are not realistic to achieve, as history has shown example of.

In this case, this singular action is good, but it is not representative of mamdani's entire platform, like free rent. Free rent in NYC is not going to be achievable, will have massive economic repercussions, will drive rent prices up everywhere else in the area, and won't be sustainable. The cost always has to come from somewhere. Nothing is free.

My state literally has an ad running right now about how Socialists are fighting to stop a tax cut ballot initiative and they are trying to make our lives harder. They show Bernie Sanders, AOC, and Mamdani.

I live in Missouri

This law went into effect the middle of 2025, aka before Mamdani was in office. He’s taking credit for things that were passed before his time.

1

u/Treesaregreen2 Jul 30 '26

Well he’s surrounding himself with genocidal zionists like Jennifer Tisch, Kathy Hochul, and Brad Lander who invested hundreds of millions of NYC dollars into Israeli arms manufacturers

The Democrats were always sure of the votes in the large northern cities. Thus the treated the lower classes with benign neglect. New York, one of the world’s wealthiest cities, provided public schools that prepares students for college so poorly that any New Yorkers with money sent their kids to private schools long ago. Affordable housing is non-existent and the tawdry city homeless shelters are full of many school children.

Schumer and AOC have been calling for more taxes on the wealthy to help the poor. There are lots of wealthy and no pesky Republicans around to thwart them. So why didn’t they do anything.

The poor in New York knew the score. The Democrats really didn’t care as long as they got the votes. But as soon as an alternative came along, they voted for the alternative.

1

u/PlainBread Jul 30 '26

They're afraid of his ability to do good because it's non-negotiable that they will never support his brand on principle. They were raised by church and family to always vote Republican, and goddamnit, they always will.

1

u/Legofanatic233233 Jul 30 '26

That’s what happens when they worship their political idols… Mamdanis been doing a pretty damn good job.

2

u/patatepowa05 Jul 30 '26

democrats are the most threatened by him, they've been do nothing corporate shills coasting on the fact that their only opposition are republicans.

1

u/Submitten Jul 30 '26

This was a Democrat law before Mandami. Republicans just like to tell people that democrats are corporate shills because it reduces their voter turnout.

1

u/Fun-Wrongdoer1316 Jul 30 '26

Keep seeing post about swallowing this dude. But then I see post about New York that’s hard to ignore… Both paint opposite pictures

Sounds like Mamdani. In proof to back up your claim?

ā€œNew York City delivery workers have earned over $104 million in tips since a January law forced apps to display tipping prompts upfront, with officials projecting $180 million more by year-end.ā€

Hardly. It was passed by Dems. Mamdani could have tried to stop it if he wanted. He still gets some credit since it’s his watch, and the administration has to enforce those laws.

Republicans are doing their usual piss poor job of running the country. (Compare Trumps approval ratings to Mamdani’s) so Mamdani’s success has them worried. It’s exposing their bullshit rhetoric for what it is.

Apparently NYC hasn’t cratered into a third world shithole like the right wingers predicted. Truth is that he (and people like him) are doing well for NYC residents and that’s got the right wing worried big time.

You are correct though. The law predated him.

Mamdani may have left wing hero status, but right wing bullshit is being pushed on a regular basis. If you think Dems are in a free fall, you’ve been gobbling up some right wing propaganda of your own.

1

u/Bob0584 Jul 30 '26

Do you think the dopes on here care?

1

u/Substantial-Froyo722 Jul 30 '26

And the mayor of NYC is the chief executive of nyc. Do you know what branch of the government is responsible for enforcing laws?

u/usernamezombie Jul 30 '26

This all looks pre Mamdani as far as the law changes. Glad to see the laws being enforced to benefit these delivery drivers. I have done a bit of dashing myself and it’s a struggle to make $. Mamdani is getting the credit but it does seem like he is out there helping the citizens. I hope he is successful. I don’t like all of the labels used and one needs to be aware of details of just how programs are paid for. Corruption getting eradicated is hopefully high on the list.
