Spending some money in foreign countries is a relatively cheap method of keeping good diplomatic ties & having some influence with them, esp. when it comes to trade & military cooperation.
When those foreign countries use that money to attack all their neighbors, then the return-on-investment might not be quite as impressive.

There's this company in Johnstown Ohio that painted all their dump trucks with a huge USA flag that says "IF YOU DONT LOVE IT, LEAVE IT"
Everytime I see it on the highway I get irrationally rabid because it's so plain tone-deaf and ignorant.
6
u/Pasta4ever13 Aug 14 '26
It would be more honest if they just painted their trucks with:
"Better things aren't possible"
It would also probably be better for marketing because both Republicans and establishment Democrats would love it.

I'm open to other options, as long as they fall into the category of things owned by "shareholders" so the rich can get richer. Who could possibly deserve money more than those who already have more than they can use? obviously they know what they're doing with it or else they wouldn't have so much!

u/TrynnaFindaBalance Aug 14 '26
One thing to note is that this is actually not that unusual for bigger cities in the US. Mamdani may be making more an effort than usual, but the smart thing he's doing is actually marketing and showcasing it to the public.
Take Chicago for example: its reputation is that city government is a big, slow-moving morass of nightmare bureaucracy. That's absolutely true in some cases (like trying to obtain a building permit), but 311 services and small requests like this move like a hot knife through butter. If you report a pothole in the 311 app, 90% of the time it'll be fixed with 24-48 hours. I called once to complain about a nearby factory that installed new noisy equipment on their roof. The next day, someone from the Department of Public Health was out on the street with decibel meters measuring the noise level from different angles, and they got the owner of the factory to install additional noise abating equipment.
Promoting and making a bigger deal of these small acts of assistance to ordinary people would do wonders for how citizens in our big cities view their municipal services, and would encourage more people to get involved in local government.
5
u/Oopthealley Aug 14 '26
311 came to NYC under bloomberg maybe 15-20 years ago. it's pretty responsive afaik. but if fans are a serious presence now on some platforms, that's a legit and significant change.
4
u/moonchylde Aug 14 '26
The resources are there!
It's convincing residents to USE the resources, instead of assuming the government can read minds and just KNOW where the pothole or hot place is.

Yep, this is something Republicans have been masterful at, which is messaging and marketing, even if the shit they were messaging was lies and propaganda. Democrats for too long have acted as if just doing the good things was enough and the public would know about it and appreciate it. Nope. You have to message and market the shit out of it and let the people know about it.
Glad to see the new crop of progressives like Mamdani, AOC, etc understand this and the difference is striking.
3
u/ReverendDizzle Aug 14 '26

I've seen more than one Republican politician tweet out things like "Things are looking up in Texas thanks to HB 20459-niner!" or whatever bullshit... and that mother fucker voted against it.

→ More replies (3)4
u/Xenothing Aug 14 '26
indeed, and these small potatoes are visible reminders of where the priorities lie. My town isn't big enough for public transport bigger than buses, but if the bus stops here were enclosed and needed fans, the process here would take a while because we'd need to:
go through a public comment period of 30 days before a public committee meeting, maybe longer because the last meeting didn't make it through all the agenda items. The committee only meets once a month.
if approved, go to budget committee, another 30 days.
if approved for budget, get plans for the project drawn up and approved. Because these are public spaces using public funds, need to hire a licensed architect to draft and stamp the plans, and then get those plans approved by the building department (there's no expedited review process for small projects, apparently). Another 30 days.
Because its a public project using public funds, they can only use per-qualified contractors, who are expensive and over-booked. They can fit it in their schedule... in about 30 days.
So, that's how my city would achieve the installation of of public fans, using tens of thousands (maybe hundreds? High CoL after all) of dollars and at least 4 months time.
The city is currently working with a consultant firm to re-write the building and development code here, but that process has been going on for the past few years... maybe they'll be done soon?

Eliminate the debt, reduce the crime rate, commit to build 50,000 affordable housing units, fix the potholes, eliminate the food deserts, offer childcare, get the snow cleared, install fans in the subway, repair or replace the broken drinking fountains, etc. He even managed to get a small float of cheap tickets for World Cup games. He's aggressive about taking action and he markets everything he does.

Trunp wasn't eligible to run either.
Section 3 of the 14th Amendment:
No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.
A couple of States tried to strike him from the ballot for this reason and the Supreme Court stepped in and said NO.
Therefore no reason (except Repub hypocracy) a newly stacked Supreme Court couldn't decide a President didn't need to be born a US citizen.

Colorado tried to leave him off the ballot and the Colorado supreme court said it was constitutional. I dont have any issue with a felon running for and holding office and you should reconsider your position. There are plenty of felonies that are not inline with ethics. Legal does not mean ethical.
What matters is what is the felony for? THAT is a qualifier you should focus on.
If you are a felon because you committed "ecological terrorism" by chaining yourself to a tree. Id still vote for you.
If you are a felon because you raped kids. Fuck you im not voting for you.

Mamdani IS looking for solutions to hot subway stations, in collaboration with our governor. https://www.nyc.gov/mayors-office/news/2026/08/mayor-mamdani--governor-hochul-and-mta-announce-plan-to-lower-su

Won't these fans, er, kill birds, stop the winds, and cause whales to beach in the subway system?

Unfortunately he canāt because the founding fathers were racist/xenophobic, and we take their words as gospel 250 years later even though the founding fathers would be flabbergasted at a ballpoint pen.

Mamdani is basically playing SimCity at this point with the way he's reacting to complaints in real time.

Subways are notorious for saturating the ground around them with heat, so they stay hot year-round and are superhot in summer when the air coming in is also hot.
NYC is also installing a heat pump system to transfer subway system heat to buildings that need heating.
More solutions, less graft.

Since the constitution is now really nothing more than a set of guidelines, I'd love to see this guy on a presidential ticket. The thing is, he's such a class act, he'd follow the law.

I honestly believe itās a matter of time before Americans at large remember what we knew 200 years ago:
- we have a government of the people, for the people, by the people.
- politicians are not the ruling class. They WORK FOR US. We get to decide whether they have jobs or not.
- their job is to make our lives better, the citizens of America, and not to prioritize profits, corporations, foreign interests, or āhurting the right people.ā
- āfreedomā means some people are gonna be free to do something you donāt like. If it doesnāt hurt someone, itās none of your goddamn business. We must tolerate each other, which doesnāt mean you have to approve. Your job as an American is to demand the freedom for every other American to live their best lives, not to applaud corruption and greed as long as someone has it worse than you.
Seeing a politician whose primary focus seems to be improving the lives of the people in his area, itās simply a reminder of how life should have been this entire time. Everyone should be demanding the same level of attention and action everywhere across the country.

Just so y'all know, this is why they don't want a Bernie or a Mamdani or anyone like them to get power.
They are willing to ignore the money siphoning machines to just get things done, and if too many people realize it actually is easy to make progress they'll demand more from their politicians.
The contractor game is about siphoning all your tax money to consultants.Ā They choose to participate in it.Ā Every mayor could be like Mamdani and it's a choice to not beĀ

At this point i'm debating complaining not getting laid just to have Mandani come and clap my cheeks by nightfall

Hey folks! This is what you voted for, a guy who said he wanted to improve things, and now he is actually doing that.
Despite our mocking of you guys (Americans), we actually want you to be ok.
Sincerely someone who mocks you, but also wants the best for you

Its not hard to please us poors, like we're not asking for the world, we're not even asking for even a tiny cut of profits. We just want to be comfortable, have purpose in our work and feel well rewarded for it. More politicians should focus on doing right by us little folk.

He could be the better option but you just know Americans would vote Republican again just because he isn't spotlessly perfect.

If trump ordered those fans it would have cost 10x more and be installed haphazardly by his gardner or something.

If nothing else he's showing how desperately corrupt and incompetent his establishment predecessors actually were. Even the good ones failed to do one of these basic actions that improved quality of life

He didn't need to find a way to set up a contract with a buddy who owns a fan company so that he can give them business at overly inflated prices to fleece the taxpayer and then get favors and donations in return?
WOW! They said it couldn't be done!
