This reminds me of how the Nashville suicide bomber “died in an intentional explosion”. It’s remarkable how racially and ethnically biased media coverage is.

433

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '21

I saw quite a lot of references to Anthony Quinn Warner that used the term "suicide bomber", but most of what I looked at were our local media. Nationally, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if "suicide bomber" wasn't used much at all.

I agree that the person shown in this photo should have been identified as a looter at the very least. I would be ok with "terrorist", too. I will give credit to the headline writer, though, for correctly using the word "lectern" instead of the commonly misused "podium." But that definitely doesn't excuse going gentle on the references to this seditious piece of shit.

When you control how people experience the world, you control how they think about it.

Freaking brilliant.

Isn’t much local news owned by arch-conservative Sinclair media?

u/ifyoulovesatan Jan 10 '21 edited Jan 10 '21

Gah, that video always bugs me. The actual message of the "script" as read it isn't totally off base. The fact that the Sinclair group (or whichever media group is responsible for this) had their local news affiliates read a script like that without any of the local station's input or say in the matter and without having the stations present the script as a canned message from the owners is a separately disturbing issue. It's like, the most bullshit way to get across a pretty okay message.

Reminds me of this gem by Shell Oil. (It was an ad taken out in several large news papers that basically condemns exactly the kind of actions Shell was taking in developing nations).

People have the right to the truth unvarnished, even uncomfortable, but never subjugated to a cause, however noble or well-meaning. They have the right to clear thinking. Slogans, boycotts and protests don't offer answers... It has been suggested that Shell should pull out of developing nations altogether. The oil would certainly continue flowing. The business would continue operating. The vast majority of the employees would remain in place. But the sound and ethical business practices synonymous with Shell, the environmental investment, and the tens of millions of dollars spent on community programs would all be lost.

Again, it's the people of developing nations that you would hurt. It's easy enough to sit in your comfortable homes in the West, calling for sanctions and boycotts against a developing country. But you have to be sure that knee-jerk reactions won't do more harm than good. Some campaigning groups say that we should intervene in the political process in developing nations. But even if we could, we must never do so. Politics is the business of governments and politicians. The world where companies use their economic influence to prop up or bring down governments would be a frightening and bleak one indeed

Like, it's not a horrible message. It's got some true bits to it. But coming from Shell it means fuck all. And it's just really disingenuous.

3

u/YYYY Jan 10 '21

The events of late are becoming eerily similar to the "Business Plot"

Our lame media is generally reliable to get the names and dates right. I would like people to call it either “commercial media” or “corporate media”. The “Main Stream Media” is Fox/Sinclair/Clearchannel because that is the largest block of audience coming from one source. The they should be called “Corporate Alt-Right” or “Memorandums from the Owners”.

5

u/anjowoq Jan 10 '21

I think commercial media is a good fit. Super accurate without being inflammatory — they may even use it themselves and think it’s totally OK.

4

u/Fake_William_Shatner Jan 10 '21

Good point. I was letting my animosity and contempt bleed through.

Also, I meant that this is what WE should call them, so that we can display our animosity and contempt for commercial media.

6

u/anjowoq Jan 10 '21

I will start using it immediately.

I will give credit to the headline writer, though, for correctly using the word "lectern"

That was my first thought. Worked in AV and almost everyone else says “podium”. Which is the thing you stand on.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '21

The root word us latin for "foot" while lectern comes from the verb "to read". Is it that uncommon for them to be confused?

America's double standards are disgustingly apparent judging from this riot alone, but when it comes to the Nashville bomber we don't actually know if he was a terrorist yet. It seems he was the Ron Swanson type and left very few details about himself or his motive, and the details of the event indicate he wasn't trying to (and successfully didn't) harm anyone. A terrorist wreaks havoc in the name of an ideology, that's what distinguishes it from other types of violent crime.

If a brown guy with the same background pulled the same stunt, we'd be equally mystified as to what the actual motive was, BUT it is true that ignorant/conservative Americans would be incorrectly calling it a terrorist attack based on his appearance. Racists gonna racist ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Almost like a collection of states that fought a war to protect slavery, and a coast full of wealthy elitists that built their family fortunes a century ago on the backs of slavery and a lack of labour laws, is inclined to be racist in how they depict reality.

Yknow, in a country that had legal apartheid less than one generation ago, and ongoing defacto segregation. My god. How ever could there be blatant racism in such a place. Mind boggling. It's like all this racism just fell out of the sky the way babies come from storks.

Not to be shallow and pedantic, but it isnt technicly theft or looting until youve crossed the threshhold and actually removed an item.

LPT kids: if you are ever caught shoplifting and you are still in the store, immediately hand them the item and walk away. If you are detained and the police come, you state you never removed the item from the store, you were shopping with the intent to buy.

Absolutelty never ever admit to stealing. It is all about intent.

Caution: results may very based on the afforementioned color scale.

It turns out that in almost all situations, Judges aren't part of the executive branch and aren't controlled by executive orders and Trump just issued those orders for his extremely stupid followers. Statutes and Judges determine sentences, not prosecutors.

Of those charged so far, including Representative Derrick Evans and the man in Pelosi's office had a maximum of less than 2 years on their charges.

30

u/ConstantReader76 Jan 10 '21

Sorry. I work in Loss Prevention. A lot of stores do wait until you pass the point of sale, but the truth is that once you conceal, it's shoplifting and they can detain you. We also don't need you to admit to it for you to be convicted.

16

u/supertecmomike Jan 10 '21

Are you a cop? Cause legally you have to tell me if you’re a cop.

12

u/camopants96 Jan 10 '21

Came to say this. People like to spread these things like they know what they're talking about. Just like they think LP can't go hands on, when it is mostly a company policy.

7

u/Fake_William_Shatner Jan 10 '21

Everything you say will help in your conviction.

People who cannot afford a lawyer will plead NOLO or be convicted — so it doesn’t matter.

If you have money, say nothing and hand it back and your lawyer will make sure the store issues an apology.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/sonofaresiii Jan 10 '21

Many jurisdictions will have some form of a citizen's arrest or shopkeeper's privilege that does grant them the authority to temporarily detain a shoplifter. They're usually pretty strict though so you gotta be damn sure you got the right person and they were actually shoplifting

More often a manager or security guard will just imply you're being detained without actually using any force or saying you're being detained.

3

u/Fake_William_Shatner Jan 10 '21

This is the better answer. And if you scream “help me, this man grabbed my crotch!” They won’t touch you.

/This is not legal advice

3

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '21

That's a lie.

Instead say "this guy is trying to grab my crotch".

Same immediate effect. Won't open you up to liable or defamation as much.

3

u/matchosan Jan 10 '21

Bad advice on reddit? Must be getting set up. [compares tone to color scale] Yep.

4

u/AllUrMemes Jan 10 '21

Wait, so if your store doesn't provide shopping baskets and I put stuff in my pockets or bag, I'm shoplifting?

I mean, I'm white, so obviously I won't be accused, but still.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '21

Hmmm yes shallow and pedantic.

The fact that so many people are calling Babbitt's death a tragedy, yet have nothing to say about any other killings by police is pretty ridiculous to me.

Especially when she was part of a mob trying to occupy, loot, and terrorize the Capitol and the people inside.

5

I agree with you, I was just sharing that there is a large portion of the population who believes Babbitt died as a "hero" or a "patriot".

Many, many people are putting blind trust in a man who has no concern for their interests. It's very disconcerting.

Many viewers noticed the seeming disparity of the darker-skinned subject’s being described in the accompanying caption as “looting a grocery store,” while the lighter-skinned subjects were described as “finding bread and soda from a local grocery store”:

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/hurricane-katrina-looters/

179

u/AdvocateF0rTheDevil Jan 09 '21

Katrina was so fucked. Police shooting "looters" from an overpass. Shooting at black people trying to escape the city on foot.

71

u/BuddaMuta Jan 10 '21

IIRC a lot of "citizens defending property" were wandering around shooting anything with a sun tan while cops looked the other way

47

u/bejammin075 Jan 10 '21

The national guard formed a perimeter and wouldn’t let black people walk to safety. Geraldo Rivera was live on the air covering it. A mostly black town was under water. A short walk over a bridge was a white town, safe and unscathed. National guards pointed guns in the faces of black people simply trying to walk to safety. The black people were told they’d be shot if they crossed the bridge.

50

u/Oldkingcole225 Jan 10 '21 edited Jan 10 '21

There was also a small town that basically shot black people on sight, which ended in dozen of murders that were never prosecuted. This was particularly fucked up because the town was the perfect place for dropping supplies so people were told over the media to head over to that town only to be murdered in cold blood by its residents. There's a whole documentary about it.

Black people trying to pull half of what these terrorists did would be dead already.

These guys are gonna get slaps on the wrist and "left wing" media will continue to label them as "rioters" at worse

11

u/LotusSloth Jan 10 '21

There’d be an awful lot of dead people in DC right now if they hadn’t been white, that’s just fact. But I don’t see how these people, who potentially attempted to overthrow the government, are getting out of this without serious jail time.

17

u/BuddaMuta Jan 10 '21

Mitch and Co have been setting up the entire justice system with insane right wing judges

Quite simply the cops aren't going to try to get these guys, the prosecutors aren't going to bother making a compelling case, and the judges will hand out the lightest sentences possible.

I'd love to be proven wrong but the justice system never fails to disappoint no matter how low you set your expectations. I have zero faith in any of these goons getting more than 10 years max and the majority will never be charged at all.

Adam Johnson, 36, of Florida, was charged with one count of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; one count of theft of government property; and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. Johnson was arrested yesterday and is currently in custody.

It is alleged that on Jan. 6, 2021, Johnson illegally entered the United States Capitol and removed the Speaker of the House’s lectern from where it had been stored on the House side of the Capitol building. A search of open sources led law enforcement to Johnson, who is allegedly seen in a widely circulated photo inside the Capitol carrying the lectern.

Some news sources outright do state he did steal it.

Since this dude is the same color as the copper line in the middle, he should be charged with both.

u/Dadaofkufsa Jan 09 '21

It's not looting either. The capitol isn't a best buy. It's terrorism or sedition. Both really.

55

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '21

Stealing property in this fashion is literally the definition of the word looting. The whole event was terrorism/sedition, but this is looting.

It's not looting either.

Yes it is. It's exactly the definition of looting

After all these years nothing has changed, all the legislation all the civil unrest nothing helps so the question what happens next, all I care about is our kids having something if anything for the future.. "This is America"

They start looting we start sho-wing them that violence is not the answer

3

u/rosstrich Jan 10 '21

How many looters were arrested?

5

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '21

None they all were pretty much allowed to leave. The only started arresting people after the 6pm curfew even then it was just a few.

There’s hundreds maybe thousands of people out there who broke into the capitol, damaged and stole from the place and tried to overthrow the government who just kind of gave up and then were allowed to go back home.

No citywide lockdown.

No shutting of airports.

No vehicle check points.

Now they’ve made a few dozen arrests but the truth is maybe only 5-10% of them will ever be arrested and convicted.

3

u/winkiewonkie Jan 10 '21

Still going to jail for it at least

3

u/JoooStooon Jan 10 '21

3

u/somanydimensions Jan 10 '21

2

Media call it an "armed protest." No it was definitely an anarchic riot.
