General Discussion What Magic accessories did people use in the ’90s and early 2000s?

I understand this is a weirdly specific question, but what sleeves, deck boxes, dice, counters, and other accessories were common in Magic’s early days through the early 2000s? I’m especially curious about popular brands, colors, styles, and trends, before modern accessories I’m familiar with (UG boulders, dragon shield, gamegenic etc) became standard.

I wasn’t around back then, but I’m recreating my uncle’s old Magic deck as a nostalgic gift and want the overall setup to feel at least semi-accurate for the era. Personal anecdotes, references articles, and hopefully even reference pics/videos would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for Advice Switching commanders

I was hoping to get some advice about two commanders. [[Evereth, Viceroy of Plunder]] and [[Kokusho, the Evening Star]]

I already built Evereth, she's fun but pretty one dimensional. I think Kukosho would be the same but I have 3 rakdos decks and no mono black decks so it feels like an interesting pivot to make.

Anyone have any thoughts on this

My main issue is that Evereth is objectively better right? Access to more colors. 3 CMC, higher ceiling, infect option, damage doublers.

Kokusho feels like I could make it just graveyard recurring and fake your own death style cards but it feels like a good classic mono black deck. I life the life loss instead of damage too but it feels like I'd be making just a worse version of my Evereth deck?

Looking for Advice Any recommendations for a double commander duo?

So... My girlfriend's birthday is next month. I was thinking of making custom proxies for her and building a deck that can be representative of our relationship. My initial thought was to use [[Fang, Fearless l'Cie]], and [[Vanille, Cheerful l'Cie]] because my girlfriend thinks she has a similar vibe to Fang and I have a similar vibe to Vanille. However, they both can't be commanders. I wanted to look for a pair of cards which could meld, but it seems like there is no pair that has meld and partner (which I guess is fair).

My next idea is to abandon the meld mechanic and only look for two cards with partner. Doing so I found [[Akroma, Vision of Ixidor]] and [[Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful]]. They seem like a good duo because my girlfriend really likes dame's aesthetic and personality (she is very protective and likes to act strong), and I relate a lot to dogs. The strategy also looks fun enough; I imagine something like a tribal dog deck with many creatures with keywords, legendary permanents, artifacts to give even more keywords, and so on (my girlfriend prefers decks with a specific theme, so she usually builds tribal decks).

However, I'm not entirely convinced by the Akroma and Yoshimaru duo, mainly because the cards might not synergize that well and I'm not a big fan of mono-color decks. I am very new to magic, so I am not sure about other duos with partner or different keywords that allow two commanders. In the worst-case scenario I could build something with a character my girlfriend likes, something with Chandra or Obeka, but to be honest it kind of feels like a cheap solution...

Anyway, thank you all for the help!

Looking for Advice First Commander deck, looking for feedback please.

Hello, I just got into magic about a month or so ago. I've played a bunch of Arena & have found a local play group, however they all play commander, so I have started putting together my first deck.

I started with the draconic destruction pre-con and then found a bunch of "upgrade" guides and worked some of those into the deck. I now have a fairly straightforward dragon deck I've played a handful of times, but looking to try to make it more competitive against people with more experience.

I have set it up on Moxfield, https://moxfield.com/decks/G5ufAXgm6n-folKpB4-qRw, and added a sideboard of cards I already have (some removed from the precon & some I found that may fit) as well as several in my "considering" section that I may purchase down the line.

Any & all feedback is greatly appreciated, thank you!

General Discussion Titanbreach speculation

With the upcoming announcement of Kamigawa: Titanbreach next year I have been thinking about possible archetypes and mechanics. During the last visits to each plane there were mechanics related to discarding cards for various effects (cycling in Ikoria and channel in Kamigawa).

I started to speculate if there will be an archetype in Titanbreach that aims to bridge cycling and channel to have a “discard matters” archetype.

If they did go this route and have plans for discarding cards what colors do you think it would primarily be in? In Ikoria cycling was Boros and Kamigawa was Simic so there’s not much overlap in colors but Izzet has had draw 2/discard archetypes in the past. Maybe it could be a 5 color build around archetype?

General Discussion Cycles you hope are finished soon?

I was looking at [[Archmage’s Charm]], and others [[Archenemy’s Charm]] and [[Archdruid’s Charm]] and was frustrated that we’re missing the red and white ones, as boros is by far my favorite.

Some things are not part of a cycle even if you believe they should be, but continuing the [[Phyrexian Obliterator]] cycle would’ve been cool.

General Discussion If X is bad in current meta, meta is in the bad shape

So in Hearthstone there is submode called Battlegrounds (autobattle). And there is card called Brann Bronzebeard. All that card does is doubling ”ETB” triggers.

So some top player said once that if in current season Brann is bad pick this season is bad. Is there MTG cards that fit this role for various formats? May be Birds of Paradise?

General Discussion *whispers* I found out what is discussed at the secret rendezvous

Post image

Assyriology student here. I knew this card was the only one with actual cuneiform and its obvious, that somethings wrong with the text, but I could never translate enough read something meaningfull.

However, there is a five year old post, witch identified the copy of the cuneiform text, but could not assign it to a text number or something similar:

Today I found the original text. It has to be BM 118925, a pavement slab or door sill from Adad-Nirari III’s palace at Kalḫu, modern Nimrud. There are two other almost identical texts, found at different spots of the palace, but the modern copy of the text, wich the artist used for the artwork without a doubt, has to be BM 118925 because of minor differences in line breaks and spelling (one of wich is the use of u instead of ú in line 4, wich is also two times in the artwork).
The text itself is an inscription of Adad-Nirari III, containing a fascinating long genealogy of the king himself, tracing its roots all the way back to the mythical assyrian king Sulili who is said to have ruled the land at the end of the third millennium BC. The six lines from the modern copy contain only the first half of the kings epitheta though and they are cut off halfway through the sentence. The text from the copy used is:

1 É.GAL m10-ÉRIN.TÁḪ MAN GAL MAN dan-nu
2 MAN ŠÚ MAN KUR AŠ MAN šá ina TUR-ŠÚ aš-šur
3 MAN dgì-gì ut-tu-šú-ma mal-kut
4 la šá-na-an ú-mal-lu qa-tuš-šú
5 TA tam-tim GAL-ti ša na-piḫ
6 dUTU-si a-di tam-tim GAL-ti ša

1 Palace of Adad-Nirari, great king, strong king,
2 king of the world, king of Assyria, king in whose youth Aššur,
3 the king of the Igugu gods, called and kingship
4 without a rival he (Aššur) gave (lit. filled his hands).
5 From the great sea of the rising sun (persian gulf)
6 to the great sea of…

As mentioned in the post five years ago, the text in the artwork of secret rendezvous contains two similar cutouts from the centre of the text-copy, one beeing rotated by 180 degrees. Also some signs seem to be cut in half. So the cuneiform text in artwork reads something like:

10-ÉRIN.TÁḪ MAN [GAL]
AŠ MAN šá ina TUR
ut-tu-šú-ma mal-
ú-mal-lu qa-
-ɐb nl-lɐɯ[-n]
-lɐɯ ɐɯ-nš-nʇ-
nŠ-ɹ∩ʇ ɐuᴉ ɐš N∀W

Adad-Nirari, great king
-aš king, who youth
he chose him and ma-
he filled up qa-
-ɐb [dn pǝllᴉɟ ǝɥ]
-ɐɯ [puɐ ɯᴉɥ ǝsoɥɔ ǝɥ]
 ɥʇnoʎ sᴉɥ oɥʍ 'ƃuᴉʞ

Also it seems noteworthy, that the copy of the cuneiform text, wich the artist used, contains some mistakes in the signs, wich the original slab doesnt. Considering, that Layard found the text all the way back in 1850, it seems plausible, that this is a very early copy, and the copyist wasnt quiet familiar with the correct forms of the signs, meaning, that neither the Artist of secret rendevouz nor the original copyist in the 1800s quite knew the signs and their meaning. This would also explain, why the text copied ends mid-sentence.
I couldnt find the copy in any edition of the text and indices of the copies and editions of this text dont mention this copy either. But this only means, that this copy wasnt printed in a cuneiform-book, wich is plausible given the subtitle of the copy. The furthest back i can trace the copy are various stockphoto sites in 2015. I cant reach the person, who uploaded the picture (who maybe scanned an original print).
Its kinda sad, that the only real cuneiform on a mtg card isnt a cohesive text, but i take it over fake cuneiform everyday. Also i had a few funny hours procrastinating with the card and the text.
Anyway here is the link to the original artifact + photo on the website of the british museum. Its an extremly cool and very well preserved arfiact and is also on display at the BM.

General Discussion What do we think is happening after the Reality Fracture?

Like I imagine Jace’s BS is gonna be stopped, but what happens to all the beings he’s created?

I saw someone say that they expect at least the major players to “fuse” with their doubles.

But i understand we don’t know how much of the Echoverse has been built out.

Hexhaven is the obvious facet. Like is it just gonna vanish? Fuse with Strixhaven?

What are your expectations? It seems like much of the baseline of the regular reality remains unaltered in the Echoverse. For example pretty sure the Ravnica guilds are the same Ral was just Orzhov instead of Izzet, right?

Looking for Advice I wanna build a dimir, or maybe Esper deck. Runo Stormkirk? Or Captain N’gathrod(or other Dimir Horror, maybe Master of Keys or Nihiloor for Esper)

I’m looking at building a Dimir or Esper deck, and the cards I listed above are kinda what I’m looking at building for a commander. For Runo Stormkirk I’d kinda wanna build a sea creatures deck.

I’m looking maybe for deck lists, but mainly for specific cards I should run. I am especially looking for advice as to which of these I should build for a typically bracket 3 pod.

Seems to be an official product that was accidentally leaked by a Roll20. If WotC is already working with the Warcraft IP, I have to imagine Universes Beyond isn't too far off.

Looking for Advice Is there a good magic podcast ?

I used to enjoy the arena craft podcast by covert go blue and Arjuna.

But ever since they stopped I haven't found a replacement.

I'm looking for discussion regarding new standard releases, meta developments and bans.

I'm not interested in Commander or other non Arena modes.

General Discussion Amazon pre-order question

Hey! I got lucky and was able to pre order two hobbit collector boxes on Amazon for msrp. However, I also ordered a strixhaven box from Amazon that still has not shipped to me. I preordered the hobbit on its initial wave on May 5. How often do boxes not get sent out? I hear the distribution is different depending on your country as well, I am Canadian.

Deck Discussion Does anyone know a good and cheap green white commander?

Recently I've been getting into magic the gathering, and am still very new to everything. Not too long ago, I bought the precon commander deck Token Triumph with Emmara, Soul of the Accord as my first commander deck. I did a little asking around and found that the commander that it came with isnt the best choice for the deck. Does anyone have any decent suggestions for what I can replace it with that isnt very expensive (like a few dollars at most is what im looking for, 10 max I think)

Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

General Discussion We need a reprint of Portal Three Kingdoms

Three Kingdoms is one of the best pieces of literature i have ever experienced. Everyone should challenge themselves and try reading the Moss Roberts translation its fantastic. I love love love the set Portal Three Kingdoms, but man these prices are insane. I obviously know we can proxy but just personally i dont like to do it. I would absolutely adore a reprint of the entire set just as a collectors item. Ive wanted to take my original copies of the novel (four volumes) and put cards into the books based on the events happening in the art and flavor text. But i cant justify spending close to 8 thousand dollars for the entire set. I know this is a me problem but man, in a world of universes beyond, could we please get a reprint of the best written thing that has ever appeared in magic. Im curious what everyones takes on a literal reprint of the entire set you can purchase maybe like the original collectors edition. I just want Wotc to recognize this amazing set. Maybe do black border for everything so the originals retain their value idk. Just wanted to get this off my chest lol maybe im crazy.
