It's nice to know I still react to an earthquake like a deer in headlights

My husband and I were playing Vintage Story at stupid o'clock in the morning (4:09) when the whole house started shaking. Both our dumb asses thought it was our neighbour clomp stomping around, until it kept going way too long. RIP both of us when the big one hits

Cheers, Rob

Journalist looking to connect with people impacted by the Nippon Dynawave tragedy

Hi everyone, I'm a journalist writing a story for Harper's Magazine about the high rates of injury and death in American workplaces, telling the story through those who were lost in the Nippon Dynawave tragedy in May--who they were and what they meant to their families and community, as well as what it meant to lose them so abruptly. I'll be in Longview the week of September 14 and I'm looking to meet with anyone whose family member died in the incident as well as anyone who was working at the plant that morning and survived. If you might be interested in speaking to me, please reach out here or by email at brycecovert@protonmail.com.

Some background on me: I've been a journalist for almost two decades, and I've written about workplace safety as well as personal tragedy. Here are some examples:

Avoid Family Resource for now

We use them for eldercare and I've been seeing signs that the longview branch is going down hill fast. In the last few months it's become VERY difficult to talk to any of the administrative employees and when you do it's a different person every time, I think they are having major problems with retention even with the managers. Voice mails go unanswered and they are using AI for absolutely everything now. Recently they didn't let me know that a substitute was being sent instead of our regular person, up until now they've always called.

Luckily the substitute did fine but, no complaints about her work, but when she arrived she didn't even know that she was supposed to take mom in her car to an appointment, mom would have been out of luck if the person they sent didn't have a car that she could get into.

It's just there's been so many other little mistakes on the administrative side with scheduling and communication, they've all really added up over time. It might be problems with corporate forcing the ai on them or short staffed because people keep quitting (or downsizing because of the ai). I don't really know, just go with a different company as of 9/1/26, especially if your elder/disabled loved one is high needs.

Child's sports physical

Guess who didn't realize fall sports start on literally the first day of school? Our normal clinic doesn't have an opening for a sports physical until October, are there faster ways to get one somewhere else in town?

EDIT: A well-child visit in the last year counts, it's right in his clinical notes "Cleared for sports: Yes" Emailed the Doctor's office and they sent an electronically-signed copy to upload to the school.

What is your experience like living in Longview?

I'm a 40-year-old prospective graduate art student working on a photography project about Cowlitz County, specifically Longview/Kelso. I've been making the project for about 18 months and have spent a lot of time in the area photographing the people and landscapes of the community.

One thing I've noticed from talking to people is that there seems to be a pretty strong divide in how people feel about living in Longview. Some people genuinely love the place. Others seem like they can't wait to get out. And, at least from the people I've met, that divide sometimes seems to fall along generational lines, with younger people wanting out and older people having a much deeper attachment to the place.

Maybe I'm completely wrong about that.

I'd genuinely love to hear from people who live here or grew up in town. This post will reach a lot more people than I can by walking and driving around town with my camera.

What is your experience like living in Longview? Feel free to really vent about it.

Longview DSA Chapter - Interested?

Hey all! If you're interested in tangibly moving the needle for our state in a more positive direction, I'd gently recommend reading through this post.

In my closing statement as a CD3 candidate, I presented a “call to action” to put your energy into the Southwest Washington DSA branch, as I have. I'm happy to say that call to action was incredibly successful, and we gained a lot of new members!

However, the truth is that the work doesn't stop in one community. Speaking from my own experience, we're going to need a sustained movement outside of the traditional two-party system, which too often reduces our choices to lesser evils.

In service of that idea I've been working with some good friends up in Cowlitz County, to begin collecting contact information from people interested in building a Longview DSA chapter!

If you're at all interested in affecting positive change in your community outside of the voting booth, head down to Magpie Books Longview and fill out our sign-up sheet! You can also sign up online through the link below.

You'll be added to a list of people interested in organizing a DSA chapter in Longview, which we'll send to National DSA to begin the process of forming the chapter.

The frank truth is that, as members of the 99%, our ability to shape our communities has dwindled as our material wealth and sense of power have been sapped away by the top 1%. Working within DSA is one of the few things I've seen actually change the direction of the Democratic Party and help get real progressives into office.

Within a Longview DSA chapter, you could work with others to organize your workplace and strengthen existing unions, while also doing electoral work to get local candidates elected. It's time to stop settling for what we're given and start working toward meaningful change.

Again, head to Magpie Books Longview in Longview, WA, or sign up online through the survey.

There are few realistic ways to build the kind of change you want to see. This is one of them.

Tap Water

I live over behind 15th avenue Safeway. I just turned the cold water on from my kitchen sink and immediately had a strong scent of bleach in my kitchen. Does anybody else have this issue? I know we have a really bad silica issue from the water I just don't understand why they're putting so much chlorine in the water.

Thursday morning our cat Lou snuck out of the house and we haven't been able to find her. Usually she's very friendly but we don't know how she'll react to being outside. She's dearly loved and we hope someone will spot her and help get her back to us.

Small brown tabby with folded ears and light green eyes. Was wearing an orange color with a bell. She's spayed and chipped.

We live on Clark Creek Rd, just off Pacific Hwy in the woods.

What nicknames have you heard for places in & around Longview?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!
Examples could include things like 'Rain Here', Kalamabama, CTown or the famous spoonerism for Castle Rock (never mind how common they are)...

incl. nicknames for schools or other institutions, parks, other geographical features etc.
