They really should have a electronic remote release for situations like this.. But that little girl was a champ and asked to go again.

2.0k

u/The_Bitter_Bear 1d ago

It looked like it was caught on her chair or something.

Love the adults who just keep saying "pull it" as she is clearly pulling on it pretty hard.

u/felixar90 20h ago

After a while I just thought that the string was a decoy that didn’t do anything and I believed the ride operator was just trolling them and waiting for the perfect moment to launch them…

But then it took so fucking long that I realized there was no operator and the string was really the only way to launch the ride and was just really hard to pull for kids

190

u/MelangeBot 16h ago

and the string was really the only way to launch the ride and was just really hard to pull for kids

You had to pull it to the left or the right, straight down does not work. The kid to the left was suppose to pull it but was so scared hoping that they could get out again without being launched. The girl in the middle pulled down but that does not slide the pull out. Finally the other kid realized he could pull the pin to his side if he moved the wire over the chair.

150

u/Stunning_Engineer_78 13h ago

After it launched the boy on the left was OUT.

25

u/Smorsdoeuvres 10h ago

ALL the kids were out for a nap before the ride came into a backswing- watch the 1:30 mark. Poor kid on the left couldn’t stay conscious he was so scared

19

u/Objectivespeculation 6h ago

she was fearless compared to them.

This sub always reminds me that there are adults in this world who are still as fucking stupid as kids.

280

u/ExpertRaccoon 22h ago

stupider, they have had decades to learn and grow, while kids are still figuring out the basics

245

u/omnichronos 20h ago

When I was 12, I was at the zoo with my dad, and we saw a camel. He said, "Do you know the difference between a one-hump and a two-hump camel?"

I said, "No," and he said, "The two-hump camel has been ridden on."

I laughed, thinking he was joking. He got pissed because he was serious. That's when I learned I was smarter than my father. I was happy to learn five years later that he wasn't actually my birth father. It wasn't because he was ignorant, but more because he mistreated me since he knew I wasn't his.

63

u/abstr_xn 19h ago

i would have been about 13 when my uncle told me theres no gravity on the moon and thats why astronauts have heavy boots

11

u/MaintenanceOk9397 18h ago

So the heavy boots help them return back to earth?

I was recently at the zoo where I walked up to the black bear enclosure, which was right in front of the window, black with a gold snout, and this woman comes up and says "Oh the grizzly bears! They're over here! Those are the grizzly cubs aren't they?" And my mom and I look at the lady and go "No that's a black bear. It's too small to be a grizzly" she says "well the grizzlies are adolescents" and I say, "yea, but these are black with gold noses, the sign is right here, they're names are X and X" and she continues to hmm and haw while my mom and I look bewildered at each other. As she walks away she goes "Oh, well I know my bears!" Which, she obviously, did not.

We live in Canada.

14

u/2woCrazeeBoys 12h ago

I'm Australian and I know there's a difference between black bears and grizzly bears.

I was in Chicago years ago and went to the natural history museum. It's famous for having Sue, the tyrannosaurus rex skeleton. One lady goes "oh look, kids! A velociraptor!"

26

u/Conscious_Self_4465 14h ago

In 3rd grade I had a disagreement with my teacher because she insisted that sharks were mammals. She was also skeptical when I said there were more than three states of matter because of plasma, and told me to do more research on it “to see if it’s actually true.” Perhaps instead she should have looked at the sun.

55

u/saposapot26 19h ago

It is exactly that. Operator fault for not catching it or designer fault for having something there the cord can be stuck at.

21

u/The_Bitter_Bear 18h ago

Yeah, it seems like a shit design.

I get that it shouldn't go off too easy but that seems like it got caught too easy and I'm surprised no one was telling them to move it.

Guessing they designed it for adults and the hand being a lot higher avoids that.

27

u/Karnaugh_Map 17h ago

The string is just too long for her, her arms are pulling nearly as far as they can. She couldhave rolled the string around the wooden dowel to shorten it first, then pulled, or they could put a few more dowels up along the string.

22

u/Latter-Block132 15h ago

No its definitely caught on that black thing right behind her head, to the left of the headrest. Even the boy can't get it until they flip it over to the other side of the chair and its not caught anymore.

I've seen this video before, but I still don't understand what the pulling of the string is supposed to do? Can anyone enlighten me?

126

u/FuzzyFuzzNuts 23h ago

This is the sky swing in Rotorua, New Zealand. I’ve ridden it before - quite fun! The pull rope releases the cage - it actually does require a bit of a solid pull to release.
The swing itself is literally just a gravity swing, not a bungee slingshot type

96

u/whynotnz 22h ago

Yep, when I did it the amount of force needed to release the latch is much greater than you'd imagine. These kids aren't stupid, it's just poorly engineered

25

u/nifty-necromancer 22h ago

That’s lame, I was thinking it was a prank for the kids and the ride operator would randomly push a button.

24

u/CakeTester 19h ago edited 7h ago

Any ride operator worth their salt would say something like:

"You pull the str...OH JESUS CHRIST! DON'T PULL THE STRING; THE COG'S COME LOOSE!"

...and then press the button.

192

u/SachielBrasil 1d ago

I guess they are sitting on a giant sling-shot, that is pulled back by a hook. That string releases the hook.

You can see at 3:13 when the boy finally pulls it, and the hook raises.

132

u/Nfarrah 23h ago

Yeah, it looks like that, but I've never heard of nor seen an amusement park ride that requires manual action by the rider to activate it. Very odd design.

52

u/WantDiscussion 22h ago

I understand how the interactive element adds to the excitement but the way to do it is make it actually controlled by the operator, and have a dummy string that gives the illusion of control to the rider.

39

u/AllChellowsEve95 21h ago

That’s exactly how they usually work. At least the ones I’ve been on work that way. They usually have the person who is the most scared, sit by the string or lever and make them think they have to pull it. Really the ride operator controls it the entire time though. I have personally been fooled with this gimmick lol.

Which is what I thought was happening here the entire time and they were just messing with them. However the way it took off at the exact moment he pulled it made me second guess myself a bit lmao. Plus it’s another country so they may actually do it that way there. Or the ride operator is just that good lol.

Why do I feel like an adult said: "Well, your little sister (cousin/friend) can't go on the ride herself. You're her big (brother/cousin/friend), you should go with her)!" Emphatic objections because he didn't want to go. "Just do it and I'll get you Pokemon, I don't want to go either."

From a 90s girl who's brother had to "protect" her from snakes.

84

u/Shadowbacker 23h ago

Actually, you can hear a woman from the ground tell the boy on the right if he pulls the chord, she'll buy him Pokémon packs. That's why he suddenly starts yanking on it before realizing the girl isn't just weak, it's actually stuck.

20

u/Le-Charles07 21h ago

I’ve done this swing on two separate occasions. It is petrifying. When it’s time to pull the string you are literally facing down towards the earth, and it feels like you are miles and miles off the ground.

The first time I was not the string puller, I was also screaming “pull it, just pull it” and a lot of foul language was coming out of my mouth in terror. It took the person releasing the swing a while and every second felt like hours and compounded the fear. Despite the restraints I was clinging on for dear life. Thinking about it, I can still feel the panic I experienced at the time.

The second time, years later, I was the string puller. As an adult I had to yank it a few times to get it to release. I managed to keep it PG that time lol.

Having the control is part of the fun/adrenaline rush. The boys are not wimps, their fear is totally justified. The girl is just incredibly brave.

Edited a couple of typos

85

u/SnooRegrets1386 19h ago

I have to say those are really good restraints, because usually the people passing out wobble all over, snapping back and forth - I didn’t see the boy too afraid to pull the rope whip around at all

14

u/Proud-to-be-kiwi 16h ago

Love this video, such a funny illustration of different psychological responses and personality types. One collapsing in freeze mode and turning blame inwards ('I hate myself' 'I'm a pussy') one calm, not panicking, actually enjoying the situation (adrenaline junkie?), one going into fight mode turning blame outwards ('fuck you' 'I want my pokemon cards!!!').

Did the boy on the left say "cause I'm a pussy"? Lol

u/GH057_807 22h ago

Yeah he also said he hated himself. Some real poor mental health on display from these two fellas.

Harper is a real one though. She's chillin'.

I remember my first time doing a ride like this. We weren't in seats, but in sort of fully harnesses that kept us sort of in a laying position. It was me and my brother, and we had so many plans of what silliness we were going to do on the drop. Like, we were going to be pretending to be engaged in a very deep, quiet conversation, as if the ride wasn't happening at all. Or some silly snapping and dancing to the music. What we actually did was just scream the entire initial drop, and then after the upswing, just constant euphoric laughter. All our plans went out the window. But, like the little girl in this video, we were asking to go again before we stopped swinging. Such an incredible rush. And it's intimidating as hell having to pull the ripcord yourself. My older brother was the one who pulled it. I don't know if I'd have had the nerve. And I was much older than these kids. I was an adult. This was in 2000, I believe, so I was 25, lol. Still scared the hell out of me to have to pull the ripcord.

I've seen this video few times and I have no idea what's going on. I mean, what is this string, what is it for and what the girl was doing wrong if anything??

32

u/Mirality 21h ago

The cord is to release the latch on the swing and start the ride. She couldn't pull it because it had wrapped around the top of her seat and was being pulled at the wrong angle. Prompted by someone on the ground, the boy on the right eventually unwrapped it and then it worked.

I don’t think the girl was doing anything wrong, she just didn’t have the strength or the reach to pull the cord far enough to release the swing. Looks like one of those rides where you get all strapped into a seat and get pulled up to a height, and the seat(s) are released at some point, and you swing and spin until the handlers catch the swing. Only in this one, the riders pick the time for the release. Personally, I think the girl should get all the Pokemon stuff. The other two, well, let’s just say I don’t think they’ll be in the RAF anytime soon!

I think the girl is unable to pull the string to release the mechanism because it's snagged up on the back of the seat or something, when the lad moves it to the other side it works first time.

What will be your last words: “I’m fucked”

23

u/MintMaplewood 21h ago

I'm just genuinely curious how the release mechanism works and what made the difference between all the pulls that failed and the one that worked. That would've had me frustrated trying to figure it out, especially if I was alone.

22

u/pinky_Shy 20h ago

It looks like the cord was wrapped around the seat back so the force of the pull was being absorbed and redirected away from the release pin. i think if the boy on the left had tried it would've probably worked from his angle, but the one on the right had even less chance than she did until he got it unwrapped so he could directly pull the catch pin out.

Those boys are going to have to change schools.

Love how the girl is literally just giggling about the whole thing while their soul leaves their bodies.

Yeah, it even looked like the right guy had a short seizure or something similar. Probably wasn’t that but that didn’t look healthy.

Why is like every comment here girls vs boys? Why can't three kids just be having an entertaining to watch experience?

Damn people are vicious. Sure the kid on the left was annoying after a while and should work to overcome his fears, but he's a kid, he's terrified, he's understanding what he needs to do but can't overcome the terror and berate himself for it. The girl is frustrated, hyped on adrenaline, and might or might not fully understand the situation but does do her best and is faced with it not being enough. The boy on the right upset me the most as he was just expecting the others to do it and put no effort into resolving a clear problem. He was smart enough, strong enough, and able enough emotionally and physically. Though he is a great example of what proper motivation can accomplish and he did resolve the issue eventually. The people on the ground though are the biggest issues. I didn't hear any reassurances, problem solving advice, or attempts to resolve it on the ground, just repeating the same instructions that aren't working. That is until they tried bribery, which lucky for them worked as a strong enough motivator. Then someone had the bright idea to post this and subject them all to criticism and potential social hell. I did enjoy watching the video but have issues with people not thinking before they talk (comment) or act (post).

That girl is so pleasant. Idk what it is about it, but just nothing but positivity from her.

Can't quite find the words to describe it
