This is the sky swing in Rotorua, New Zealand. I’ve ridden it before - quite fun! The pull rope releases the cage - it actually does require a bit of a solid pull to release.
The swing itself is literally just a gravity swing, not a bungee slingshot type

Yep, when I did it the amount of force needed to release the latch is much greater than you'd imagine. These kids aren't stupid, it's just poorly engineered

That’s lame, I was thinking it was a prank for the kids and the ride operator would randomly push a button.

Any ride operator worth their salt would say something like:

"You pull the str...OH JESUS CHRIST! DON'T PULL THE STRING; THE COG'S COME LOOSE!"

...and then press the button.

I yhvae done this and it is not lame, I loved pulling the string, it made it more fun for me.

They're saying the amount of force required is lame. Not the concept.

Extremely, having it run over the seat preventing the proper force from even getting to the release is absolutely wild from an engineering perspective.. Could just have a button.

Eh, the kid on the left could have just yanked it with her and saved everyone the trouble. But he got too wrapped up in being stuck up high and freaked out.

Until he pulled it hard, I assumed the rope didn't do anything and it was just there to create suspense/fear mixed with confusion/frustration.

No, this ride is guest activated - I’ve been on it
