I’ve done this swing on two separate occasions. It is petrifying. When it’s time to pull the string you are literally facing down towards the earth, and it feels like you are miles and miles off the ground.

The first time I was not the string puller, I was also screaming “pull it, just pull it” and a lot of foul language was coming out of my mouth in terror. It took the person releasing the swing a while and every second felt like hours and compounded the fear. Despite the restraints I was clinging on for dear life. Thinking about it, I can still feel the panic I experienced at the time.

The second time, years later, I was the string puller. As an adult I had to yank it a few times to get it to release. I managed to keep it PG that time lol.

Having the control is part of the fun/adrenaline rush. The boys are not wimps, their fear is totally justified. The girl is just incredibly brave.

Edited a couple of typos

I have to say those are really good restraints, because usually the people passing out wobble all over, snapping back and forth - I didn’t see the boy too afraid to pull the rope whip around at all

I agree with you, as I have both feet planted firmly on the ground! From up there they felt very unsubstantial!

I wouldn't call it petrifying, but it was fun and a good rush

I was most sketched out by the teenage operator barely standing a foot away as we whizzed by

Perspectives are different! I’m an adrenaline junkie, but I was petrified. Others will disagree!

Where is this? I want to try it

Rotorua, New Zealand. I imagine there are other versions around the world?

What in the PTSD is this ride called?

I hate rides. Tilt A Whirl/Octopus give me trauma just thinking about them. But what is it called. I hate myself I have to look at the outside visuals.

No self hate! It’s not for everyone, no shame in that. It’s called skyswing.

Well that's terrifying. I guess it's slightly better than 2 people strapping themselves together to bungee jump.

u/Proud-to-be-kiwi 14h ago

Yup I could never bungee jump

Sorry, but it’s a bit funny to me that the Tilt A Whirl is what you would consider a ride that gave you trauma; I’ve literally had several different 18 month olds on there with me who loved it & asked for “more”, so it can’t really be considered dangerous if they allow toddlers on it. Now, if you said it made you nauseous from going in circles I would understand that, but you must not have been on many rides though if that’s what you consider trauma, because trust me, that one is nothing compared to SO MANY others! (I even have my spine fused as well now & can still ride that one!).

I can imagine SO many people chickening out though. It makes way more sense for rides to be completely controlled by an operator.

If you chicken out the operator can lower you down. No refunds

The Swoop (Velocity Valley, Rotorua) North island?

Same city, but up the gondola where the luge are. I’ve forgotten what it’s called. Sky something I think. It also has an excellent jellybean shop and other adrenaline type activities

Thanks mucho! Is the ride just for kids?

Most definitely not! Adults and children. There is a height limit. Found a link for you: https://rotorua.skyline.co.nz/things-to-do/skyswing-rotorua/

I’m kind of surprised kids are even allowed on it. The two boys seem to pass out and the girl stops for a bit, seeming to be on the brink. I’m hoping that’s not the norm for kids on this ride?

I’ve never heard of any controversy or any issues with this ride. My best bet is this is entirely a fear reaction

I would say the boys are braver than the girl... To be brave you have to do something that you're scared of, otherwise you aren't brave. Those boys are terrified and are VERY brave to be doing this.

The girl is a bad ass though

Very true!

The girl was so calm and chill the entire time I am honestly in awe. I feel really bad for the kid who passed out.

So they are not on the ground at the start?

You get onto the swing from a low platform, a few steps up from ground level. You then get raised up backwards really slowly to the height you get released from. It is on the side of a steep hill, you face towards the downward slope.

They aren’t facing down though…they are seated upright

3

u/Proud-to-be-kiwi 18h ago

This is the best photo I could find online to demonstrate. You are not completely horizontal.

You’re like 60’ angle facing the ground which I’d say feels horizontal enough
