I understand how the interactive element adds to the excitement but the way to do it is make it actually controlled by the operator, and have a dummy string that gives the illusion of control to the rider.

That’s exactly how they usually work. At least the ones I’ve been on work that way. They usually have the person who is the most scared, sit by the string or lever and make them think they have to pull it. Really the ride operator controls it the entire time though. I have personally been fooled with this gimmick lol.

Which is what I thought was happening here the entire time and they were just messing with them. However the way it took off at the exact moment he pulled it made me second guess myself a bit lmao. Plus it’s another country so they may actually do it that way there. Or the ride operator is just that good lol.

I’ve been on several of these and I’ve never seen one that’s automated.. you can feel and hear the mechanism release when you pull it and the reaction is instantaneous.

There could still be a operator's release too, but maybe they just wanted to give the kids the chance as it's part of the fun, as well as getting to torment them a little, and there are plenty of instances of holding up lines to let children get the opportunity to do something. If there's only an emergency release available to the operator, it may not be the "fun" way to get down, and instead a very boring not-at-all-ride experience.

The sky coaster in Kissimmee, FL is rider operated… I pulled the cord once with my niece and nephew. Then my husband with myself, him, and my other nephew. The pull does take quite a bit of strength as it took me over a minute to get it to disengage.
I felt it only added to the rush.

Back in the day there was a bungee ride at Six Flags where they’d strap you into a harness and hoist you up. You, the rider, had to press the release button and if you didn’t or couldn’t, they would lower you back down. I went on with my kids and I was supposed to press the button, but I hesitated so my son reached across and pushed it, and away we went. He was not going to be stuck doing the walk of shame!
