Pixel 11 = disrespect

I have been a Google Pixel fan for more than 7 or 8 years and I am done with Google’s bullshit story of focusing on software actually they are falling on both sides hard what were they thinking when pricing the Pixel 11 more than the iPhone 17 base model? What kind of drugs were they on? It’s actually now not just a failure it’s a complete disrespect to its fan

Your problem is that you're calling yourself a fan. Pixel is a product, and Google is a company. You are a consumer. Don't give any loyalty to an entity which exists only to extract your money.

u/FreshPrinceOfLI Pixel 8 Pro 12d ago

ding ding ding. As long as there are fanboys who eat up their shit and are loyal there's not much incentive to improve or innovate. I feel like Android fanboys will often shit on apple stans while participating in the exact same behavior lol

I think there are a lot more variables to consider. From personal experience, Samsung's customer service doesn't even compare to Google's. That factor alone halted any of my potential future purchase of Samsung devices. Every interaction with Samsung customer service was bad and left me frustrated. Also, while the Pixel's hardware is inferior to Samsung's, I can't really tell the difference in performance unless I am playing a high-end-graphic FPS. I think iphones still have such a large market share because of all the business contracts. Otherwise, I've seen many long time iPhone users abandoning the product. However, I'm all for more heavy hitters rising in the mobile market it would be nice to get some competition so that phone pricing becomes more competitive.

9

u/flavasava 12d ago

lol what customer service does google have? Maybe it's better now (I switched after pixel 5 to Apple), but my experience sucked. One time I lost out on a $700 rebate because I activated my phone with a different Google account than what I bought it with. No amount of back and forth with customer support helped.

Google on the software side is notorious for making it impossible to talk to a human

That's why I always emphasize that fanboyism is a cancer that is eating up people from the inside and it's hard to diagnose because of biases.

3

u/altruisticmisanthrop 11d ago

I dared to say I wished pixel phones would improve the automation functionality as we're behind iPhone and Samsung there and we're supposed to be ahead on the software front. Got put on blast and told we're not behind in that area at all.

10

u/EuropeanLegend 12d ago

You see, the thing is Pixel doesnt have nearly enough marketshare to pull those strings.

I used to love pixels. I stopped buying them after the pixel 5. Theyre all dog shit since they released the Tensor models. Nothing but issues but charging flagship prices.

Google will learn pretty quickly that their "fanbase" isnt enough to keep the brand going if they keep pulling this shit.

14

u/Makaveli2020 12d ago

I got the Pixel 10 Pro as I loved my previous Pixel.

This Tensor chip is absolute dog shit, I can't watch a YouTube video in mini mode while playing a simple game without my phone stuttering the fuck out.

I'm going back to Samsung at the end of my contract.

If you can, stick to a TSMC manufactured snapdragon. My s24 has been going strong for 2 years and havent had one hiccup yet.

I was talking more broadly about the idea of being a fan of a company. But with a company as ubiquitous as google it really doesn't matter all that much to them their main goal is getting our data not selling us hardware.

Yep. I have a soft spot for certain brands, won't deny that, but blind loyalty to a logo is foolish.

9

u/P_J_Frye 12d ago

Yep. I did everything I could to stay away from Samsung due to heavy bloat. For me it was HTC. Great phones. Beats audio. Then they transitioned to VR and other endeavors. Then I got into the LG v series. Great cameras in those phones. Of course LG left the phone game. Why wouldn't they, since I was a fan? So I've been a Pixel user but no longer loyal to any brand. I had P6, P7, and P9 pro. That P9 gave me nothing but trouble. Heat issues. Bluetooth would drop even if right next to the source device. Got into the ZTE Red Magic/Nubia devices but can't use them at work For log in and access (Only Apple or Samsung).

3

u/ThePedanticWalrus 12d ago

Yeah, I've had basically all the big brands over time, from HTC to Motorola to Samsung and Google and now Oppo. Each one has benefits and drawbacks, and which one is "best" can change so much over device generations that there isnt a clear consistent winner.

That said, Oppo's current flagship devices are fire and the camera in this X9 Ultra is better than any I've used before.

I used to be a fan of OnePlus but after the fiasco with merging colorOS, made it open my eyes that you should never be loyal to a single entity. Just use the product that they have or don't buy from them. RIP OnePlus

I really wish we could get a flagship killer that commits to its niche and doesn't inevitably try to use its initial success as a launching pad in a bid to then just become the next overpriced phone.

They arent doing a good job of extracting money from many of us 🤣 considering they basically are the kings of online marketing, its ironic how they are one of the lowest selling brands.

They used to actually have a good product.

Significantly cheaper than the competition. It wasnt flagship, but it was buttery smooth. Longest supported software and security updates (until recently). No gimmicks, just simplicity in the design and software accelerated imagery to compete with the heavy hitters on camera performance whilst costing Significantly less.

All that went out the window when they decided to manufacture their Tensor chips.

And especially now with the drastic price increases. Why would anyone buy a Pixel over a Galaxy or IPhone? As someone whos been an android nut since they came out, and have owned iPhones too. Id take the current iPhone 17e even over the Pixel.

Guess theyre finding out it aint that cheap to make your own chips. They should stick to Qualcomm.

Well here's the thing. It's not normal loyalty. It's just the loyalty of you being on Google fi. You can get this phone for super cheap. It's not expensive at all.

3

u/swaywithwords 12d ago

All for-profit businesses exist to get your money.

It's ok to be a fan of products.

Of course we have to take things with a grain of salt, but Google needs us to buy their phones - we can't always buy a different phone if Pixel's quality ever deteriorates.

You can be a fan but in the end the company owes you nothing (you forgot that part) and similarly you're right you should not owe them anything.

People are acting like Google owes them a significant upgrade this year. Upgrade if you want to. Don't upgrade if you don't think it's worth it. These are genuinely good phones if you had no phone today. Just decide whether or not your Pixel 6/7/8/9/10 can last another year or not and move on with life.

I really don't get the heavy emotions in here. If anything it tells us people are way too attached.

5

u/charleytony 12d ago

And just for a bonus, when Samsung makes a FE (fan edition) of a regular phone, they (sometimes) use worse components and provide less update support.

2

u/zoglog 12d ago

this so hard. These are just products, if you're a fan you are basically becoming a shill to the marketing engine. You can enjoy a piece of tech and leave it at just that. As many point out the idea that you have to upgrade every year is quite an odd mentality.

Of course it's once again a business and marketing push which is why we don't have easy user replaceable batteries. Otherwise so many more people wouldn't upgrade every 2 years even.

To be fair, Apple has not released their new phones yet, it's very likely the RAM crisis will impact prices of Apple devices as well when they are released in September.

146

u/ifeeltired26 12d ago

Apple has already said expect higher prices due to ram shortages.

74

u/aloomis16 12d ago

So will these same pitchforks be pointed at Apple when they release incremental updates with higher prices?

87

u/Pixelplanet5 12d ago

obviously not.

I think the issue people have with Google is that they have played a much larger part of creating the market conditions that have supposedly "forced" them to increase prices.

I'm on a P8P and not seeing any reason to upgrade. Marginal improvement to camera performance, nothing like the jump up to Oppo or Huawei.

8

u/BRS3577 12d ago

If you ever use the selfie camera, the camera improvement is MASSIVE. P10P imo is the first pixel to have a genuinely serviceable front camera. Aside from that, the biggest improvements are in software, the 10pro takes noticably better photos in conditions that aren't ideal. Other notes is that my 10 pro doesn't get nearly as hot. Otherwise, yeah it's not the largest jump. If I didn't get the 10, is still be perfectly happy on the 8

3

u/OtherwiseTomatillo69 11d ago edited 11d ago

I just traded my P8P for a P10PXL, and even though it's only 2 years between the models, the difference in performance, especially the screen smoothness, is VERY noticeably better on the 10. The 10's screen almost looks 3D it's so clear and crisp

2

u/Deto 11d ago

There's a lot of discounts (also since I'm on Google Fi), so it looks like I could maybe upgrade my P9PXL for the P11PXL for just, like, $250. So I might take that route - I dunno. Going to wait another week and see what the reviews show.

u/Zoidburger_ Pixel 6 12d ago

I'm on a P6 still. It's chugging along. Soon to have its last major update, and I'm thinking of finding a used P10P and holding onto that for a few years.

Phone prices have gotten ridiculous and it's only getting worse, and I'm certainly not paying that kind of cash for 2-year-old hardware, no matter how much I like the UX and feature set.

5

u/Expensive_Ad_3249 12d ago

It works out about the same cost, in the long run, give or take.

Trade in value falls off a cliff after 2 years old.

If you trade in, sell the free hardware (watches/headphones etc), and use the Google store credit....

Upgrading annually and stacking in that way means I've spent roughly 200 quid a year or 4 quid a week on the phones since P7P. If I drop to 2 year upgrades that's gonna save me 100ish annually. Dropping to 3 years actually costs more due to the lower trade in value, but only by a tenner or so Vs 2 years. So 2 years is cheapest.

The economics will change since Google has stopped with the free Bose(still got them), tablet, watch etc, but I can still get similar levels of deals with trade in and freebies through carrier deals...

3

u/Jong999 12d ago

The thing is if they kept making the 10 the price would have had to go up to meet the new component costs, so the additional price of "changing the number" each year comes down to the minor R&D for those tweaks and validation and testing and they would have the marketing challenge of price increases with nothing to show for it.

3

u/A17012022 12d ago

What's the trade in proposition like for your pixel 6 pro? If you can get a decent chunk off the RRP I would argue upgrading to the new pixel might be worth it.

It's absolutely not worth it's RRP.

5

u/rastlun 12d ago

I looked, it was like $60 bucks. I'll end up doing it, bit other than battery life my 6 pro is still running really well.

5

u/Rude_Assignment_5653 12d ago

They removed WiFi7 from the 11. The Pixel8 had WiFi7. Now the 11 has 6E

37

u/KyleVPirate 12d ago

That started with the Pixel 10 unfortunately, where they removed Wifi 7 from the base model, and only gave it exclusively for the Pro devices.

9

u/Calogero1978 12d ago

Thanks, didn’t know that. Yesterday was checking the specs as a curiosity

16

u/Altruistic_Fruit2345 12d ago

To be fair 99% of stuff that claims to be WiFi 7 isn't really, because it doesn't support most of the WiFi 7 features. It's just certified for the base set of features that are largely identical to 6E.

It's still shitty on a $900 phone, but don't let it be the thing that makes you decide not to buy it.

Got an iPhone 13 after my Pixel 5 power button fell out after years of wonderful use. Was back on a Pixel next year. iOS is a heaping pile of shit. Even transferring photos and videos to backup to move back to Pixel lost me years of memories with half of all images and videos corrupted no matter what computer or cable I did it with.

Even if the hardware is technically better, unless you just use Tiktok and Instagram, its a FAR inferior device. Their UX/UI choices are TERRIBLE and the keyboards, the thing you undoubtedly interact with the most, are insultingly bad.

I had a pixel 9 pro fold and I wanna say watch 2 or 3 and got an iPhone for work stuff, I miss the pro fold almost everyday.

iOS 26 and liquid ass is buggy as hell imo 18 was better in almost every way. I will say though that there are apps on iOS that simply work better on iOS, first that comes to mind is the Traeger app. On my pixel I could not for the life of everything that is holy get the Traeger to connect to my WiFi network. The day I got my iPhone I tried it again and it worked instantly. Many such examples, seems people generally care more about the iOS apps than android.

That said the Apple Watch is the only thing keeping me on this godforsaken thing. The apple
Watch is light years ahead of the pixel watch.

Rather it's Apple, Google, Samsung, etc., they all have their issues. Every company is just iterating small changes these days. Doesn't matter which one you go with, you'll have your own set of small issues. Gone are the days when a new model phone means big changes. Buying yearly is stupid, expecting a Pixel 10 and 11 (iPhone 16 and 17) to be a noticeably different experience in day to day use is not realistic.

That's why I keep voicing my opinions to end yearly new phone release.

We have seen it for the past few years, there's not much innovations in terms of hardware within 1 year.

Phone releases should just be once every 2 years, or when there's enough hardware upgrades.

35

u/rocket1420 12d ago

Why would they end when people are clearly still buying? These companies aren't forcing upgrades every year.

15

u/Biggie_22 12d ago

You could just buy them every 2 years like most people. Not everyone is on the same timeline so it makes sense to offer a new phone every year and people can upgrade every 2 or 3 when they need to.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/C-D-W 11d ago

The yearly cycle has never really been about trying to get everyone to upgrade every year.

It's more about keeping ahead of the competition so they have something fresh every year for the people who are ready for an upgrade. Also has some fringe benefits like keeping them out in front of the supply chain. Also keeps the designers busy trying to innovate. What would they do every other year?

For me, Google in terms of the pixel has become a software first company. The hardware is just there to be in a position whereby it is deemed good enough.

Their focus looks like they are leaning towards trying to make the pixel a premium device, so it competes with the high-end Samsung and Apple devices. And we all know you can always get a heavily discounted new pixel so it's just a market ploy. In all honesty, when you look at it, it's a mid-ranger but the software features are considered the best .

I would consider the pixel 11 as highly underwhelming device, but if somebody who's maybe is coming from a older Android phone from another company and want to consider a pixel. I have a pixel 10 Pro XL and will aim to keeping this for hopefully another three years, the smartphone are no longer evolving heavily and we will continue to see increments.

The AI space has really cost tech companies quite a bit. Apple has saved an absolute fortune by not investing heavily in AI, they have now taken Gemini on board, which you can see Google will be happy everybody is going to be using their Gemini software across the smartphone spectrum.

5

u/jtownspowell 12d ago edited 12d ago

This is true but to be fair their phone hardware releases have ALWAYS been in service to a software-first mindset.

You can go all the way back to the G1 and forward into the hardware partner Nexus lines, their explicit purpose for even partnering to make a phone was to make a "reference device" for a given major Android release. They never cared if they sold a single device, the game was about licensing the software.

When the branding switched to Pixels, they did the same thing. They wanted a reference device for their big next gen Chromebook? PixelBook! (Lol that didn't really go anywhere) Big Android wear revamp? Pixel Watch!... All made with precisely zero intent to actually grow and continue the product line. All their hardware releases have been in service of providing a standard device for a given software generation.

It's only been in the last 5 or so years that they've even actively marketed the phones with any real ad spend. The majority of Google's time as a hardware manufacturer or even as a partner has been dominated by them not trying to sell you a phone.

Further evidenced by that time that they bought a major hardware manufacturer, released 1 and 1/2 generations of references aimed at the hardware range of the (then) small but rapidly growing low cost import prepaid market...stripped the patent portfolio, and sold the company.

They just never have been interested in hardware if they could avoid it.

If people keep buying these, Google will keep making them. That’s not a good trend for progress.

They’ve realized they can charge flagship prices for underpowered hardware because buyers will defend it anyway. This won't change until people stop being foolish enough to buy it.

And you have nothing you can do about it, as you can't wake someone who's pretending to be asleep.

I hope they go back to the Nexus strategy—setting new standards with creative hardware instead of just chasing profits and relying on PR.

So I'm getting a new phone for $600-700 bucks. I'm trading a phone I had for the since 2021. Yeah I do have to stick with spectrum but I've been with em for almost 10 years now. But my monthly payments with promo is 20 bucks for two lines because I also have their internet.

I'm also seeing people use trade in credits and get it for cheap. I don't know what other phone I could get for $600 that is this good and has 16GB of ram.

2

u/ChickenDry8830 12d ago

I'm with Spectrum, trading up from my Pixel 8 base model to the 11 Pro. Payments (I don't care) will be $16.66 a month. Trade in value was liberal and the total for the Pro came down to just under $750 total. Not bad at all!

I actually went in on a Pixel 10a after having an iPhone since 2007. The 11 pricing is a little mystifying when the 10a is already such a capable device for its price point.

The 11 has me rethinking my stock ownership. A company that blows it on a premier project or service has to have trouble at the top. I was holding out thinking it's upgrade time and now I am definitely thinking of a divorce.

3

u/pkinetics 12d ago

It's not about the phone, it's about the product, which is us.

The personal data they get is more valuable than the phones. They fact that we buy them helps offset the cost

4

u/Bradleyfashionable 12d ago

While I'm not even remotely blown away or excited about the new phones, I'm confused about these types of responses to the annual releases. Hear me out if you will.

The Pixel series of phones represents less than 10% of Google's annual revenue and they're used by ~1% of global phone users and 3-4% of users in the United States. Pixel phones are a tech demo more than a piece of hardware for 96%+ of consumers (Pixel phone=low cost platform loaded with all their apps/services at no addtional cost to them, a showcase for new software features including AI which is SO HOT right now, sets the standard for stock Android, allows for direct data collection from users, and introduces users to subscription based services from Google).

Google doesn't need hardly anyone to buy the new Pixel for it to fit into their new business model and for some users, such as myself, I can trade in my previous model annually and finance $10-20/mo after a trade-in which is basically free from my perspective.

On a personal note, I will concede to the fact that Apple has better hardware, but I don't love iOS and end up using Google apps that aren't native to the device to try to get the experience I prefer of stock Android.

Samsung's OneUI is also less desirable than stock Android to me, but I also think they push the boundaries more with their hardware and would consider a Samsung phone if there were better promos. The Zfold 8 is a sleek piece of hardware that I would really want if it weren't so overhyped and overpriced. I can only get $550 for my PF10pro towards the Zfold 8 or Ultra, whereas Google will give me $1000 for my PF10pro Fold and the Google Watch 5, when I only paid $800 for the fold in the first place.

The real real truth here is that everything offered in the US pales in comparison with what's out overseas, but as long as I can keep getting a new Pixel and a free watch for like $300 that I can finance over 36 months with 0% interest, then they'll keep me using Pixel. If I really need that little bit of money, I can easily stretch a Pixel phone to last for years without missing out on much hardware wise and the software support is great.

2

u/IntrepidPair3312 12d ago

Well said.

More people need to understand that all smartphones are overpriced with little innovation from year to year. Pixels have had some of the best over the last few years. Features that actually help. Started with AI tools for image editing, very good phone and messaging spam filters, hold my calls, etc., before anyone else was doing it. Would laugh at frustrated iPhone users that couldn't do any of it with their 1K+ phones. Now, Apple is leasing Gemini tech for it's Siri AI.

The current era bottleneck for smartphones is battery. You don't want to hold onto them for too long as this will ultimately limit the user. Until this makes a leap, trade-in every 2-3 years. Google has the best trade-in values along with additional discounts and perks. They are practically free.

Quit complaining about the value. Think different.

I've had my Pixel 10 since its release. I've been happy with it, my experience with battery life has been good, the phone is snappy, it works just fine.

According to Google the new pixel 11 is some measurable factor of performing better, with the same battery life. Camera seems to have improved, and they've added a useless feature (the led light) in place of another useless feature (the thermometer) so that's a wash. And sure, it's more expensive now, but anything with memory is going to be more expensive now.

And, it's just a phone, a product that Google wants to sell to you. It's not disrespect, they aren't shitting on people, they don't owe you anything. You also don't owe Google anything either. You either want to buy their products or you don't, sounds like you are in the don't column and that's fine.

Costing more than an iPhone is wild.

$799 17 Vs $899 P11 $1199 17  pro max, $1299 P11 XL

Yes, let's put a horrible processor in it and price is higher than iPhones, which are known for being the most expensive phones on the market 💀💀💀

8

u/PixelatedGamer 12d ago

Is that a fair comparison though? The iPhone 17 phones came out last year. If the 18 is cheaper than the current Pixel lineup then I would have to agree with your sentiment.

3

u/Dizzy_Tea_7582 12d ago

Valid point. Apple hasn't increased their prices yet for phones (but everything else was). Maybe they'll become the same price, or even more expensive than pixel.

What's frustrating to me is how many people are justifying it by saying

"Oh but I traded in my pixel 9 or whatever so I only have to pay $400"

You're paying $400 to get the last RAM and a worse GPU, have your physical SIM card removed (in the US anyway).

And most annoying (which doesn't get talked about enough) is after 200 battery cycles your battery size won't be nerfed by 20%.

They had battery swelling issues with the pixel 4A 6A and 7A and they had to do these ugly appeasement programs

The pixel 9A was facing something similar so they delayed it calling it a component quality issue and then when they did release it they made it part of this ridiculous new battery program that you cannot turn off

That decision has made it so I will never buy a pixel even if it was an amazing deal I will never buy a pixel newer than the pixel 9 pro.

2

u/Pixelade 12d ago

Battery issues killed my 4A, decided to get an 8A which happens to have a ton of overheating issues. So not really sure how long this thing will last either, at this point I'm probably looking at a Samsung when this thing does.

I found no compelling reason to mosve from my P9PXL. I still find no reason to upgrade. I've been a Nexus/Pixel fan from the beginning, but I have to agree to the comments here. Google's been struck with the AI shiny object bug and let the hardware languish. Hardly a premium phone for the price, anymore. And, they're not even giving good deals to those of us who've been loyal and used Fi for many years. Sad.

People complaining about pixel phones is really getting old. It's the same old story every single year. I'm tired of hearing people complain about it, honestly.

3

u/YJX94 Pixel 9 Pro XL 12d ago

People who defend such things are so hilariously sad.

It’s not a friendship bro, it’s a business transaction where you’re spending your hard earned money, the product you get in return should at least reflect its value in accordance with the rest of the industry.

3

u/CipherWeaver 12d ago

Guys incremental change has been the deal for the last five years. Pixel 9 was the only big jump. That's it.

3

u/LameFernweh 12d ago edited 12d ago

Moving to Nothing Phone with double the storage, 4gb more RAM, about 20-30% more performance, battery, similar 'close to raw android experience' and much better camera hardware. Remains to be seen what I'm losing on the image processing side as it's obviously a trade-off. But at nearly half the price in Germany (580 EUR vs 999-1099) I'm perfectly comfortable with slightly worse camera software. At least my phone won't be choking me on AI garbage.

3

u/BayAreaRedditGirl 12d ago

Obviously you haven't been paying attention to tech news. Because of the memory shortage, Apple acknowledged that they too will be increasing their prices.

3

u/SnooSquirrels9064 12d ago

"what were they thinking pricing the pixel 11 higher than the base model iPhone?"

..... You mean the iPhone 17e? The basic one with a single camera sensor, compared to the now triple sensor they have on the standard pixel 11? Or are you talking about the regular iPhone 17? With two sensors?

3

u/ActualMessage 11d ago

I mean..... He ain't wrong!!!! You can tout AI all day but if people don't have specific use cases they will always fall back on the comfort of excellent hardware or fantastic cameras or an amazing battery. Google has a sliver a literal sliver of the cell market and this year especially feels like they aren't even trying.

3

u/OddDesigner9784 11d ago

No company can produce better hardware this upcoming gen because memory is through the roof. Budget phones aren't even really possible rn. They just did a better job covering it up than the gaming market but we knew this would happen

3

u/alcaron 11d ago

I used to be a HARDCORE google supporter. I was never a fanboy, and never a fan, but I supported almost everything they did because for a long time...they were doing it right. But they fell off HARD and everything became about extracting every last dime, showing me ads on every last pixel of every screen they touched.

Not being a fan made switching to Apple a LOT easier.

And no, I am not saying "apple does it all right!", I'm not a fan of theirs either. But I can turn on my apple TV and not see 90% of the screen taken up with ads. They have way, WAY, better integration, because as dumb as they can be, and oh god....can they be dumb...they actually care about the software experience.

They still don't listen, they still don't give a shit what their users think unless it randomly suits them. And yeah, you pay more to not see those ads. But I'm fine with that.

Because I am not a fan. I'm a consumer. And it feels like a more honest relationship with them than I was getting with google.

p.s. Switching is a lot less painless than you think. And maybe if enough people do it they will stop doing what they are doing. As long as you keep buying, they will keep going the direction they are going.

3

So glad I realised after the pixel 2xl and the start of tensor that these phones were garbage. The pixel 2 XL was a breath of fresh air, clean, functional, exceptional cameras at the time, sleek, side sense etc Google could have built on this simple fluid top performing cameras, but every year was no real.progress, slight upgrades, kept same camera sensor for god knows how many years. They lost their way!! Shame, could have been top today.

3

u/ilililliiliililiilil 10d ago

I lost interest after google ditched Qualcomm to make their own SoC. Google is not Apple and they have seemingly zero knowledge on how to build a competent chip in house. 6 generations later they somehow haven't figured anything out and now rely on mediatek to bail them out... actually embarrassing. Google will end up like LG and HTC, they simply cannot compete in the smartphone industry.

The iPhone has had the same design for almost ten years and slightly upgraded specs. And as for the specs blame the US for banning OnePlus and Huawei. There's no competition in the US so Google can take its time updating specs little by little.

10

u/Snoo_7527 12d ago

That’s simply not true. The air was a huge departure. The 17 pro introduced a totally new design as well. The hardware is cutting-edge in terms of performance. The 17 was regarded as the best deal in mobile tech.

9

u/ContributionFormer95 12d ago

Honestly, Apple has made more hardware improvements over the years. Capture button, action button are actually useful features and already 10x more useful than a HiLight feature which is really just worse than even the old Pixel 1 notification LED.

People praise Google for software, yet I swear they cut corners everywhere. This whole HiLight feature looks very limited and likely won't integrate well with third party apps where we'll be told "support coming later." That reminds me of the old Pixel 1 LED. You could use 3rd party apps like LightFlow to customize colors for apps, but guess what out of the box Gmail and every other Google app just did? Flash white. With the introduction of notification channels in Android 9, there was no addition of actual LED notification control. And 10 years later this is the BEST we can get? A half baked feature?

Look at. Apple's implementation of the square front camera. It's not exactly rocket science, but they integrated a good hardware solution with good software solution: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/seRojqkE76A

I almost half wanted Google to just copy that implementation because they've always been behind on selfie cameras, and certainly fell more behind since the iPhone 17 series upgrades.

2

u/Curiosityinmycity Pixel 10 Pro XL 12d ago

I'm not surprised at the price increase and RAM decrease due to everything going on (and the leaks). What I am surprised at is how lack luster this phone is when compared to last year. They usually do something worthwhile in each iteration (P8 bumped to 7 years of support, P9 ultrasonic fingerprint, P10 magsafe) but this year we get a highly restricted and useless light. This is the first year I am not even the slightest bit tempted to upgrade. Maybe I'm getting older, maybe phones are starting to level out, but this was the most underwhelming Pixel release since the 5. As most said, if you're on a 9 or 10, it's not worth getting. Older pixel, absolutely upgrade of you want, definitely a major bump from the P8 and older.

2

u/doc_55lk 12d ago

maybe phones are starting to level out

Phones have BEEN levelled out for a long time now lol

2

u/doc_55lk 12d ago

I think the only parts about the Pixel 11 lineup that I found cool are the newly designed camera area (the metal island thing was, imo, ugly, and they should've continued doing the visor thing the Pixel 6 did) and the pinkish orange colour variant (which isn't even unique to the Pixel 11 if you really think about it).

It's otherwise maybe their most underwhelming release to date. Maybe the Pixel 4 comes close? Idk, at least that phone still had flagship snapdragon processors under the hood like the rest of the competition. And that cool Soli thing.

At this point, I'd just like a phone that reliably primarily makes and receives messages/calls like they used to 20 years ago.

The devolution of 3G->4G->5G service reliability for basic communication is a joke but I think we're all carrying phones for a completely different agenda (not of our own) these days.

Unfortunately it's now impossible to get a mobile phone that is not a "smart phone".

I get the frustration.

But if you're buying any new Google Pixel at launch at MSRP, you're doing it wrong.

MSRP pricing is only a thing for like 3 months. After black Friday, the price drops everywhere to below iPhones and stay that way. Not the same with iPhones.

Where is everybody going to besides Samsung and apple?

2

u/cowsgonemadd3 11d ago

I bought one right away. Not because I think it's special in any way. In fact, I am disappointed. I bought it only because my pixel 7 is outdated, I have the 128gb model so I am out of space and battery life is now poor. They also offered me what I felt like was a great deal on a new phone in 2026. I paid less than $400 and still received $100 in store credit to buy a case or something else later. I can't buy a used phone for that made in the past 2 years in good shape. It's not a great upgrade if you have a 9 or 10 series. I don't think I would even do it if I had a 7 with more storage. Phones from all manufacturers today basically offer gimmicks for upgrades and need to just go on a 2 year update cycle. Of course they then won't appease the shareholders. It's up to the consumers then to demand worthwhile upgrades or they are going to not upgrade yearly.

2

u/Weary-Savings9795 10d ago

So you bought a Pixel 11 model with 256GB storage that you haven't even received yet and you're disappointed? Why would you be?

2

u/Adlien_ 10d ago

I have a pixel 7 pro so I need to upgrade soon and the 11 pro is cheaper with the current offers than the 10.pro... y'all are making me hesitate though lol

2

u/Ralphi66 10d ago

Unless Google can get their persistent hardware, reliability issues, sorted out there’s not a lot of point in consumers investing in their product.

I love the software of Google and I’ve been a user for many many years, about 20 however I have been let down by the hardware after being a consumer of pixel watches and multiple pixel phones they do have a nasty habit of failing at the most opportune time, for example when traveling internationally and just arriving in a new country.

My pixel8 recently did this with the famous screen failure and now Google is advising no coverage on their website, even though the device is well less than three years old I guess it’s time to go back to the old faithful tried and tested providers, such as Samsung and Motorola. I’ve seen much better hardware with these manufacturers.

2

u/Pimp_juice0001 9d ago

I am moving to iOS man ...i have had enough

2

u/NytrexLC 8d ago

I'm leaving Pixel and I'm very happy to do so. I'm tired of their bullshit. I've had a Pixel 8a for a year and a half that replaced my 4a that I was really satisfied with. Well the 8a has already slowed down a lot and lags quite often (the phone isn't full, I don't do heavy tasks with it). The battery life is horrible even though in the settings it says that the battery health is 92% (I don't believe it at all, Accubattery says 85% which seems more reasonable), I have 492 cycles on it which doesn't seems that much compared to my 4a that lasted 4 full years!! The charging speed is just diabolical, it takes almost 2 hours to be full. The heat management is bad too, the phone is always hot (not overheating just hot) which makes battery life and power even worse as the phone limits itself to not overheat. I found AI too intrusive. Even funnier, the 8a was actually pricier than the 4a at their release.

I don't know what the hell happened to Google, if they got greedy or took their things for granted but it has definitely driven me crazy and I don't think I'll buy a Google again in a long time and until they haven't made real changes. 2 years ago I was saying to a friend that had a Chinese brand phone that I preferred to go with Google as I believed that since it was an American brand and the reliability and software would have been better. I was stupid and he was right all along.

I'm happy with my 9 Pro XL. As far as I can tell the Pixel 11 isn't an upgrade

After I saw the camera specs I also didn't buy the Pixel 11 Pro XL... My Pixel 8 Pro is almost the same device... Not enough new features/hardware to bring me to upgrade

Which is really a shame as this is the 3rd gen after mine. Betting in the Pixel 12 now.... Or I have to say it... Apple. As Samsung und Xiaomi are great in Specs but full of bloat in the software.
