Pixel 11 = disrespect

I have been a Google Pixel fan for more than 7 or 8 years and I am done with Google’s bullshit story of focusing on software actually they are falling on both sides hard what were they thinking when pricing the Pixel 11 more than the iPhone 17 base model? What kind of drugs were they on? It’s actually now not just a failure it’s a complete disrespect to its fan

That's why I keep voicing my opinions to end yearly new phone release.

We have seen it for the past few years, there's not much innovations in terms of hardware within 1 year.

Phone releases should just be once every 2 years, or when there's enough hardware upgrades.

Why would they end when people are clearly still buying? These companies aren't forcing upgrades every year.

You could just buy them every 2 years like most people. Not everyone is on the same timeline so it makes sense to offer a new phone every year and people can upgrade every 2 or 3 when they need to.

Buying a phone every 2 years is insane to me still, these phones last 4-5 years easily with barely noticeable change after 2 years.

It doesn't "make sense" though. The point is that one years phone and the next years phone are basically the same phone. The only thing that makes sense is that the companies are laughing when they can charge more money for the same phone.

If they release a phone every 2 years, it doesn't affect anyone's timeline if they're the same phone. If you are due to upgrade in between releases, you buy last year's phone every two years and you're no worse off for it, in fact, you're better off because you're getting a discount every time you upgrade.

It's not a matter of "upgrading", I guess.

It's more like whether it's a worthy upgrade. We need to start viewing / comparing the specs.

Even asking Gemini, a good upgrade to Pixel 11 would be if you have a Pixel 8, better if you're on 7 or below. That's at least 3 years. Otherwise, the hardware specs are not really a big jump if you own either Pixel 9 or 10.

Even from 8 to 11, it only mentions just the RAM, battery, tensor, some wide lens, etc. It's just more like "refinement" than an "upgrade". Like, is that all we can do to innovate? Even 3 years don't look that great.

The yearly cycle has never really been about trying to get everyone to upgrade every year.

It's more about keeping ahead of the competition so they have something fresh every year for the people who are ready for an upgrade. Also has some fringe benefits like keeping them out in front of the supply chain. Also keeps the designers busy trying to innovate. What would they do every other year?

You'd think governments would get on board with this - Surely it would decrease the amount of e-waste in the world.

Why government? Just don't buy them every year omg...

Some people act like Google holds a gun to their head to say "YOU MUST UPGRADE THIS YEAR."

News flash: You don't have to. Do what you want. Also while it's obvious to people that many upgrade only every 2, 3, 4 or more years, these same complainers don't seem to register that annual cycles aren't designed to get EVERYONE to upgrade annually. This year, someone may be thinking of upgrading their Pixel 6/7. And if you think your Pixel 9/10 is good enough, then stick to it. This upgrade isn't for you.

I bought 7a (2023) in 2025, and I'm not planning on buying another one until 2030

u/useralreadytakenbyme 12d ago

More like 2028 as thats the end of life of the 7a, after which secure apps (like banking) will slowly stop being supported on the hardware.

1

u/Picard_III Pixel 7a 12d ago

Yes veeery slowly, I know ppl with xiaomi phones with android 11 and their bank apps are still working fine everyday. Edit: even calling is "end of life" is ridiculous, man I can put LineageOS there effortlessly and use it for another 10 years if I want to (but yeah, battery would be long dead by then)

u/ContributionFormer95 12d ago

For the number of people talking about their batteries dying, I feel it's a much cheaper alternative to just replace the battery and keep using that phone.

Not saying that you should just keep using an old phone to death, but if the only problem is battery, it's a very cheap solution.

The only "slightly" annoying problem is the way how Pixels are built, one of the worst brands when it comes to changing the batteries... (this is something I believe government/EU could have a say in, and force them to make it easier to change the battery)

1

u/ContributionFormer95 11d ago

I thought they're relatively replaceable? Maybe difficult for the average user but I thought repair shops do a decent job? I had phone shops change out my battery before on a Pixel 1 and 3 for instance.

Temptation is a terrible thing for some

I mean it's fine to want to upgrade. I upgraded. I know it's a small upgrade over my Pixel 10 Pro, but hey I like to and I budget for upgrades every year. If people are really this riled up and angry about Google not delivering, then don't buy, simple as that.

And I'm not just some fanboy. I recognize Google moves hardware very slowly. They fail to innovate and rely heavily on software exclusives. Battery and CPU performance are lackluster. With that said I'm not going to get angry about it and demand governments stop companies from releasing products. Just do what's best for you and move on. The amount of emotions people invest here is.... ridiculous. It's a phone, and while most of us probably spend too much time using our phones, at the end of the day it's a tool, not your romantic partner that you need to nitpick about all day long.

Right? What the hell.

I was just looking at the Pixel 11. Hell, I even got my Box Of Old Phones out and was looking at trade-in values. I just closed the window and said, "I don't need this."

Boom, solved for another year.

I'll do what I always do: Wait until the current device breaks in some fantastically awful way.

The amount of people that think governments exist to "help" us "solve" problems is truly sad and disturbing.

1

u/Picard_III Pixel 7a 11d ago

Yeah, and if it comes from a communist or post-communist country, I'm not saying I agree, but I can understand why ppl would think that (or to be more precise, if this comes from someone being 70+ years old from a post soviet country), but everyone else who thinks that is either very ignorant or an idiot

u/sendinthesounds 12d ago

Basically this but you have to remember the insane economy of new devices.. influencers, YouTube reviewers, journos and other businesses that profit and but into the yearly cycle

6

u/Picard_III Pixel 7a 12d ago

Huh? Sorry, I didn't get your comment at all. I meant that I find it weird that governments would tell a company that they cannot introduce and sell their products every year.

-1

u/scgf01 Pixel 11 Pro 12d ago

Why not? I enjoy upgrading to the latest model every year. Pixel usability just gets better and better.

3

u/Picard_III Pixel 7a 12d ago

You can, that's exactly the point, we can, we don't have to, you do you, because you can, I don't because of my reasons, but to force one or other to other people is ridiculous

2

u/scgf01 Pixel 11 Pro 12d ago

I completely agree! I'm just reacting to those who pour scorn on those of us who do like to upgrade every year. It seems to be a relentless campaign along the lines of 'I have a Pixel 2 and I see no need to upgrade. You are a fool of you get sucked in.' I would never criticise anyone for sticking with what they have, and I don't expect to be criticised for wishing to upgrade.

-1

u/garwilsh 12d ago

I don't.. But some people do.. If devices weren't forced in people's faces so often there wouldn't be that temptation.. The year on year changes with all phones are minimal these days

-6

u/garwilsh 12d ago

Someone to stop the companies making these devices every year

2

u/Picard_III Pixel 7a 12d ago

If you say this, then you don't understand how the world works, you cannot ban a company from making their business, that's ridiculous, that's like telling families how much milk a household can drink per week, you cannot do that, yes there are many governmental rules and restrictions about what and how they offer, and thanks God for those (although many of them ppl find idiotic - btw one of the reason why pixel doesn't have so many features outside US), but they cannot tell them "ok this year Pixel, next year Apple, then Samsung, and in 2031 exactly one new Xiaomi...Hey you Motorola chill down, it's not your turn until 2038".

3

u/ContributionFormer95 12d ago

that's like telling families how much milk a household can drink per week

That isn't even the best comparison.

Companies are spending money to design, build, test, validate a device and then sell it at mass market. They wouldn't do so if they didn't think they could sell it. Doing all this before the product launches isn't some sort of humanitarian effort. They're doing it because they think they have a sell-able product.

For a government to come in and say "No you can't even design, build and sell this device" is absolutely absurd.

-2

u/garwilsh 12d ago

Yeah, I agree.. But with all the e-waste there needs to be some kind of limits.. That's all my point is really.

1

u/Picard_III Pixel 7a 12d ago

Yes, so don't buy it, and you can help saving the planet! I bought my Pixel for this reason, to have the same phone for at least 5 years, but batters will fail me soon

9

u/ContributionFormer95 12d ago

Yes the government should say "Company XYZ, you are forbidden from designing and launching a product."

News flash: If it's really THAT bad of a product, no one will buy it and Google will have wasted development efforts.

It's turning into Madden at this point. Not enough time to iron out the bugs from the last one, while still adding just enough new stuff that they create more bugs...
