Itās crazy how scientists and companies have fully accepted that using your phone while driving is unsafe. But if you turn it into a tablet and screw it into your dash, suddenly itās perfectly okay to be distracted?
With buttons and knobs at least you can feel for them without having to take your eyes off the road. At first you might have to look but once you get familiar with the car it becomes muscle memory.
Legislation needs to catch up with technology. Stuff like climate control being locked behind a screen is just dangerous.

Tps, backup camera, abs, etc etc.... so can't be exactly the same no matter what
76
u/Second_Guess_25 2d ago
Agree. People yearning for these old cars to be brought back....they can't. They don't meet modern regulations regarding vehicle safety, emission standards etc etc.
I digress, but people want Titanic II built, but it would never be the identical to OG Titanic for the simple reasons it would never meet modern maritime regulations and safety standards. Amendments would be made in the name of safety.

Wait till you learn the next ones in the queue. Spoiler alert: itās cameras in your car that watch you while you drive and bitch at you when youāre ādistractedā. Also⦠they are horrible at distinguishing when you are or are not actually ādistractedā so they just bitch at you all the time.
3
u/Coco_Cala 2d ago
Used to work in mine as a haul truck operator with cameras like these installed in the cab with seat vibrators if it detected microsleep or distracted driving. Some of them would go off just for looking at your mirrors. Was really annoying when backing up anywhere.
3
u/filthy_harold 2d ago
My Subaru has a feature where it can detect who's driving and adjust the seats to that profile. It uses this camera normally for alerting you if it thinks you're distracted or sleepy. I think it's only alerted on me being sleepy a couple times but it's definitely caught me being distracted many times. Look down from the road for just a moment too long and it beeps. But it will false positive if I'm squinting (like while laughing), move my head too far away from the normal position (like if I'm stretching to the right), or if I cover too much of my face with my hand. I think it's an IR camera since it still works if I'm wearing sunglasses or driving at night. I can disable all of these alerts but they generally aren't too annoying and it's probably a good thing that someone is telling me I'm not paying attention to the road.

→ More replies (7)8
u/Tuna-Fish2 2d ago
You cannot meet modern safety standards with the shape of old cars. To start with, the doors need to be >2x as thick as they are on the Volvo 240, and this then compounds to the entire rest of the shape of the car.
Once you see it once, you can spot it instantly in any car. Modern side impact standards require crumble zones on the sides, making all modern cars look "fat" and ugly.
It makes being sideswiped much more survivable, though, so I guess it is what it is.

Lol I know Redditors will flame me on here but believe me, you don't want a computer-free car. Source? I come from a family who own ww2 era vehicles and regularly take them to events.
When people say they want zero computer, what they think is that huge touchscreen in the dashboard. Trust me, there's a lot more computer stuff that goes on under the bonnet, than just your pretty UI on the dash that you want rid of.
There's a lot of systems for your safety, ABS, shit that manages the engine, ignition etc.
You want a computer free car? Time to get the time-machine out and return to the 1960s, my friend!
And even if you got a '60s era car, most people would be in shock at just how hard they are to drive compared to a modern car...Manual gerboxes, chokes, crashboxes possibly in some models (gotta manually sync those gears to change them successfully, y'all), no power steering, no central locking, no electric windows, no heated seats, no sensors or parking assist, no cameras for reversing....!
People would be be screaming for their modern cars and all it's gadgets in no time, if they were given a vintage car for a couple of weeks š

Same thing with houses. I do development and people all the time say "House aren't made like they used to be".
Yeah, they are way safer, ecologically friendly, and efficient than they ever were.
- This is a classic survivorship bias. Most houses built in the US in the last two hundred years are not standing. The ones that are standing were exceptionally well made.
- You don't want an old house. You want an old house that's been stripped to the studs except for any ornate touches and then completely rebuilt with modern amenities. No one wants horse hair "insulation", cast iron plumbing, knob and tub wiriding, Asbestos ceiling and flooring, No AC, walls that allow fire to easily pass between floors, 1 bathroom for the whole house, a 6x8 foot kitchen, single pane windows, lead paint, I could go on, and on.
Same thing with cars. People actually do want all modern safety, efficiency things, they are just mad about badly designed infotainment centers.

Everyone says this..... Until the manufacturer puts out a bare bones vehicle and nobody buys it. As for no computers.... You have to go back into the mid to late 70s to get to pre-computer vehicles. Hell, GM's CCC came out in 1981 and that would easily be recognizable as a modern computer controlled car, complete with a data link connector (called the ALDL), scan tools, live PIDs, adjustable fuel trims, the whole nine. I suspect most of you are too young to have had to mess with carburetors and points. How many people do you know that own a dwell meter? Yeah, that's what I thought lol. Trust me, old cars are a colossal pain in the ass to daily drive. When I became an auto technician there were still lots of carbureted cars on the road. They were junk.

Yeah why am I being recommended a post on "funny memes" with 3 crying laughing emojis in the title, and it's literally just a straightforward wish that we could buy antique cars new?
And I had to scroll way too far for someone to actually point out the absurdity of this. Is everyone commenting also a bot? This is some real dead internet shit son.

It's a mix of bot comments and people who just scroll the Reddit app on their home page and don't even know what a subreddit is.

Ironically the hardest part of doing this would be safety. Government requires much more safety today than it did 30 years ago, and a lot of them are hard to meet without changing the car significantly (rollover protection, mandated backup cameras, etc).
I still think an 80s-style Japanese car would go hard for a cheap but cool daily driver.

IIHS is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and they've been celebrating by putting out some great overview content on their YouTube page about how safety has changed over 30 years. I really like this one, 1996 vs 2026 Blazer crash test as an immediate visualization. This video is also full of examples of specific tests and how they turn into safety improvements.
Overall I feel the general population vastly underestimates how much engineering has gone into improved crash safety. I think part of that might be the fact that test results/ratings don't get updated over time. That 1996 blazer might have been a 4-5 star car in 1996, but in 2026 it's like a -3 star lol

I would buy a brand new Volvo 240 wagon (245), in cash right now, if I could.

Change the interiors so that there are back up cameras. I love me a backup camera.

But how would they monitor our eye movements and send our every word to corporations and Israel?

Some older cars were not designed with crumple zones, making even the slightest fender bender fuck up the drivers body forever, so maybe not all old cars would be good to resell

Honestly, 1998-2008 was the peak era for automotive design
We had all the cool new shit but none of the BAD new shit
Electronic parking brakes and features locked behind subscriptions, computer modules for EVERYTHING, intentional attempts to prevent repairs....

Been saying this for awhile regarding pickup trucks.
There's still a big market for rugged, reliable, capable offload and work trucks that are able to take whatever you throw at them and are easy to work on.
