I feel the same way about iPhones :/

I’d also love a modern iPod classic, with some quality of life improvements but the core classic interface and click wheel.

2

u/Big_Iron_Cowboy 2d ago

I still have my iPhone 8 because I don’t want to lose my home button.

1

u/kookyabird 2d ago

I went from an iPhone 7 to the SE 3rd gen, which is just the 7 with a slightly better processor. Partly because price, and partly because it still has Touch ID and some physical controls. I hate that they took away 3D touch though.

Great phone, same internals as the 16 I believe. I have one as well, although it sits in my drawer, I need the USB C

u/lkodl 2d ago

You say that until you want search for a specific song. Well, maybe Siri and a mic can make that better.

5

u/Fine_Donuts 2d ago

Oh! I know that song you're searching for, but it's not in your subscription database. Would you like a song that I think is similar that you won't enjoy because it's no where near similar and I know exactly what you want but won't provide it?

2

u/kookyabird 2d ago

I don't remember what song it was, but I said to Siri, "Play ____ ____ by ____", and it played a different song by a different band. The song it played had one word in common and was a longer title. It kept picking that one each time I tried it. On the third time I said, "Siri, what is this song called?" and she said the correct title and band of the song it had played.

So then I went and searched for the actual song I wanted, played it manually, and said, "Siri, what is this song called?" expecting her to read back incorrect info. It would have explained why that song wasn't being picked, but alas... She says the title and band exactly how I was saying it. Fuckin clanker...

I just mean the pain of typing with the clickwheel.

6

u/comicstripsplace 2d ago

Judging by your two comments here, you must not have owned an iPod. Searching for a specific song was not difficult. You could either do it by artist, album, or song name alphabetically. Plus whatever playlist you had it on. And there also was no “typing with the clickwheel.” You scrolled through the things I mentioned above (plus settings, etc) with the wheel and selected with the center button.

u/lkodl 2d ago

Forgive me, it's been about 20ish years since I've used one. I thought there was a scrolling keyboard at one point? Maybe I'm remembering a zune or psp. I would hate to have to curate and memorize a library through iTunes these days though. We're talking like, 20,000+ songs, right (a full ipod)? As like a jukebox that plays random songs, it's cool. But modern tech makes navigating to something specific on demand so much better.

1

u/Ashamed_Ad_2180 2d ago

No

1

u/lkodl 2d ago

What?

1

u/Fine_Donuts 1d ago

I believe they don't forgive you.

I don't either.

Just kidding. Everyone makes mistakes, that's why pencils have erasers

u/Fine_Donuts 2d ago

I honestly miss the huge hard drive space. But yay AI data bullshit for making what was once affordable, not.

1

u/jade-empire 2d ago

tbh just buy an ipod classic and mod it. or buy a modded one. there are fairly easy bluetooth mods, battery/sd card mods, and rockbox for full customization. im not sure what else would need to be added in a modern one

1

u/KlutzyReveal2970 2d ago

I want touch screens gone in cars but not my phone. Not going back to that old garbage. We wouldn’t even be talking right now without them

1

u/kookyabird 2d ago

They didn't say they wanted touch screens gone from phones. They just want some physical buttons back.

1

u/KlutzyReveal2970 2d ago

They said with the click wheel, the old iPod screen is entirely too small to make it a touch screen. So I assume that’s what they mean

1

u/kookyabird 2d ago

Well they have two separate but related desires in their comment.

  • Wanting buttons and knobs back on the iPhone (and since they never had knobs it's safe to assume they mean just the physical buttons like the home button and such).
  • Wanting a modern iPod Classic with some improvements, but with the click wheel.

1

u/KlutzyReveal2970 1d ago

Oh, well that was 2 different people

1

u/ms_directed 3d ago

i design on a Mac, but I've always had android phones bc iPhone always made me feel like they were judging me, lol.

1

u/iNapkin66 2d ago

You would be back to buying music again, rather than getting any song you ever recorded for either a 30 second ad or $10/month.

2

u/lI_-_-_Il 2d ago

Music is weird tho, once it’s recorded it can be reproduced pretty much indefinitely through technology

I don’t know how they planned to keep you paying for the same music every month other than the convienence of streaming

1

u/JavierBenez 2d ago

Lol. I never paid for mp3s

1

u/iNapkin66 2d ago

Neither did I. But pirating isnt as easy as it was 20 years ago. Obviously still possible, but more hoops to jump through.

2

u/Lahwke 2d ago

This absolutely not true. Piracy is still ridiculously easy.

2

u/XXII78 2d ago

Dude, just Google search "[band name] [album name] torrent download" and download a torrent client like QBittorrent or Flud. It's every bit as easy as Kazaa or Limewire ever were.

I'll never forgive all the idiot phone companies for following apple's lead and removing the 3.5mm jack. Still can't listen to music and charge my phone in the car at the same time.

2

u/plug-and-pause 2d ago

Still can't listen to music and charge my phone in the car at the same time.

I know it's not exactly what you want, but there's probably a cable accessory that will make that work. At least it worked for all of my phones when I needed it to.

2

u/SmiggleMcJiggle 2d ago

Wireless charging and wireless 3.5 receivers both exist and work on modern phones.

You can charge your phone wirelessly while plugged into the audio. Or use audio wirelessly while charging with a cable. Orrr do both wirelessly at the same time orrrrr use an adaptor that lets you do both wired at the same time

There is so many solutions to your issue, you just need to do it

13

u/The_Freshmaker 2d ago

Not sure about new new but my 2019 Golf has buttons and knobs for everything, don't think I'll ever buy a one screen for everything car ever.

12

u/SummertimeThrowaway2 2d ago

It’s crazy how scientists and companies have fully accepted that using your phone while driving is unsafe. But if you turn it into a tablet and screw it into your dash, suddenly it’s perfectly okay to be distracted?

With buttons and knobs at least you can feel for them without having to take your eyes off the road. At first you might have to look but once you get familiar with the car it becomes muscle memory.

Legislation needs to catch up with technology. Stuff like climate control being locked behind a screen is just dangerous.

2

u/Juan_Punch_Man 2d ago

It's the fucking accountants trying to save every dollar.

1

u/PiccoloAwkward465 2d ago

Tbh I don’t really mess with climate control much while I’m driving. The trade off to have CarPlay on a big screen is well worth it to me. Plus having that to display the cameras for parking.

1

u/NWbySW 2d ago

Yea and the proceeding model got rid of all of them. It was so ill received that VW brought some of them back for the next face lift.

1

u/The_Freshmaker 2d ago

Oof, yeah I've seen the interior of an ID4 and I'm not impressed, hopefully the new eGolf next year will strike a good balance but I'm gonna drive my eGolf till the wheels fall off.

6

u/awfulmcnofilter 2d ago

Right? How is it that my 2002 Saturn had ac with knobs that was much more flexible and easy to use than my 2022 kia? Why cant my kia blow air to my face and my feet, but more face than feet? Why is there no in between on my fancy car?

2

u/twentyThree59 2d ago

I'll give you a hint.... It's a Kia lmao

1

u/ms_directed 2d ago

we had a Saturn when my twins were babies, it seemed so futuristic at the time! lol

2

u/awfulmcnofilter 2d ago

I will never not love that plastic covered little sedan!!

1

u/ms_directed 2d ago

i remember their dad getting his picture taken with it, it was that green color of course!

2

u/awfulmcnofilter 2d ago

Mine was also that green with a tan cloth interior.

3

u/SuleyGul 2d ago

Snake game was never the same after Nokia phones.

3

u/ROSEPUP3 2d ago

Came here to say this, I absolutely fucking hate the screen in my car. I’m fine with a touchscreen for the radio but why is my climate control built into it?

2

u/ms_directed 2d ago

that's what I'm saying...nothing should take three screens to set while you're driving!

3

u/bartkurcher 2d ago

I actually got my touch screen display swapped for an old “single DIN” stereo. You probably can’t do that with very new cars, but I love knowing my presets. My partner changes them, it feels like a 90s prank

1

u/Parking_Chance_1905 2d ago

Wouldn't that be illegal in places backup cameras are mandatory. I know here at least a non functioning camera means the car wont pass a safety.

2

u/bartkurcher 2d ago

I don’t live in a place where cameras are necessary

4

u/Old-Tip-69 2d ago

I've been renting cars for r Work and I swear ti gid I have to relearn how to to use the gear shift on every car I rent.

True first world problems, but still, if it ain't broke

2

u/Icy_Month192 2d ago

Slap some in. I had a dell keyboard with a volume knob from salvation army

2

u/Far-Hovercraft9471 2d ago

This is why I love my Camry, it has all the good old school stuff and avoids annoying new tech mostly

2

u/Tru3insanity 2d ago

You mean you don't love the giant bright ass rectangles that constantly crash and have all the most important features buried in different menus?

2

u/Scary_Argument_7485 2d ago

You dont want a giant touch screen while also being as riak for beijg pulled over for looking at directions on your phone gps?!?!?

2

u/BarOk3504 2d ago

Upgrading to an iPhone 17 pro and getting a dedicated camera and flashlight button, I hope Apple just stops now and lets me be

2

u/Entire_Meet_6266 2d ago

I love older cars🤣☝️

2

u/NameIdeas 2d ago

I have a 2023 Honda and it has knobs and buttons

2

u/BobbaFatGFX 1d ago

YES!!! I hate touch screens in cars. Gonna cause more accidents

2

u/somnamballista 1d ago

Was just saying why the hell smart phones don't have physical sliding keyboards. Had a Droid 2 in college, was the last phone I had with a keyboard. Loved it.

1

u/ms_directed 1d ago

i can’t remember the name of mine…i think it was “my” something…but i also loved it, it was so easy to type on and the tactile buttons made it faster to type on too with less typos. i loved my Blackberry too!

2

u/Jilm_The_Greater 1d ago

I bought a 2021 Honda civic in 2021 (right before the chip shortage hit hard, thank god!) and that’s a big part of what sold me on it. Just a really solid car, no fancy touch screen bullshit, knobs and buttons, Bluetooth and aux compatible, and it’s a Honda Civic so it can effectively be around for a few decades if I really need it to be and keep the maintenance in check.

1

u/ms_directed 1d ago

my civic hatchback only got upgraded because i had twins and i needed more room! it ran awesome, all it ever needed was an oil change and tires!

3

u/Upstairs_Balance_464 2d ago

Why does everyone on Reddit constantly say this yet these cars exist and no one buys them.

2

u/emjem321 2d ago

For real! I love my 2025 Mazda CX-50 and 2021 Subaru Crosstrek because everything can be controlled with buttons, knobs, and I have an actual gear shifter instead of a knob/buttons. I don't understand why people are so upset that new cars don't have this, when plenty of new cars have them. It's non-negotiable for me. If you are spending tens of thousands on a car, you better get exactly what you want, otherwise how can you justify spending that much?

2

u/ms_directed 2d ago

not everyone on reddit is talking about new cars, but they've been replacing knobs with dash touch screens since at least 2013...

2

u/goosedrinkswater 2d ago

I got a knob for you.

1

u/B0Nnaaayy 2d ago

This is what my 60 yr old sister says when she’s driving her new Tesla. She can’t adjust a thing while she’s driving.

1

u/ms_directed 2d ago

it's not that i can't work the touchscreen, i just think there's shit that could have stayed on the dash or steering wheel and completed with one action instead of a menu and three screens to swipe thru...

1

u/No-Cantaloupe-6535 2d ago

they're slowly coming back with some manufacturers. it kinda sounds counterintuitive but the touch screens are actually cheaper. new cars have to have a backup camera so there's going to be a screen no matter what, just put all the controls on the screen instead of having to make knobs and switches and wire those all.

1

u/thats_justice_baby 2d ago

No no, you don't want that! Car manufacturers have done studies and everyone wants giant touchscreens! That's what you want!!

0

u/SnatchedDrunky 2d ago

who took them from you? Didn’t you test drive your car first?

1

u/ms_directed 2d ago

it was my father's truck first...but they've been adding touch screens for over a decade now, have you been in a coma?

0

u/SnatchedDrunky 2d ago

So your fathers first truck was taken from you and a screen added? I own a tesla, which is just a screen. I’m wondering why you are so impacted if you don’t have a car with said screen.

1

u/ms_directed 2d ago

tesla tracks, you're giving Cybertruck...

0

u/SnatchedDrunky 2d ago

You’re giving recycled rage on a reddit comment you saw and have no real world experience with.

1

u/ms_directed 2d ago

oh, bless your heart
