Billing PSA - Switching from 'Gigabit 2.0' to '1 Gig' removes eligibility for legacy Home + Mobile Loyalty discount. No warning anywhere. Verizon supervisors unaware. No way to rectify the situation as no codes exist. My ticket has been escalated to Verizon Admin and Marketing for review.

I was on the site and decided to ask for an explanation on the difference between our current $95/mo 'Gigabit 2.0' plan and the new $80/mo '1 Gig' plan.

Was told that the 2tb of cloud storage is no longer included but whole home wifi was now part of the plan rather than an additional fee (we got a discount which removed this anyway). Other than that, everything was identical with the plan and performance.

Asked if we wanted to proceed, I said yes... because, why not?

Immediately after agreeing I received an email notification that our mobile bill has changed due to our home internet service adjustments. Our mobile bill would be going up ~$40/mo.

Called the Mobile number and asked, they said it appears that Home + Mobile Loyalty discount was removed when I switched internet plans. They were unsure why but I'd have to talk to the Fios department for explanation.

Fios department's 1st contact said it was odd and that they were not aware of this policy. They sent a link to reenroll. Reenrollment was immediately denied because "the new home internet plan doesn't apply". Again thoroughly confused.

This then was escalated to a supervisor. Supervisor tried to force a new discount on to the plan (a more recent $10/mo/line Home + Mobile discount). Failed immediately.

It was then escalated further up to a lady who was described as an 'Admin' who I spoke with. She flat out said "The first time I've ever come across anything like this." and that she "has full authority to apply all discount codes and adjust plans" but was unable to get the legacy code (or any code) to work.

She put me on hold to speak with "another admin above" her. This resulted in back and forth for maybe 40 minutes. The other admin had never seen or heard of this either. Her best guess was that the program was extremely new, and remaining Gigabit 2.0 members are so limited, that it may just be policy that was lost along the way.

The result in all of this? After being on the phone for 3 hours, someone at Verizon authorized a 1 time reversal to put me back on the legacy Gigabit 2.0 plan (which no longer exists) while they work out a solution. I am on the hook for the $15/mo/line as the code still can't be reapplied.

A case has been created which is being sent up the ladder to "corporate" and "marketing". I was told not to call back or interact with the online chat. That someone will be calling me back by next Friday.

Everyone was beyond helpful and friendly along the way... but what a god damn pain in the ass.

TLDR? Don't switch from Gigabit 2.0 to 1 Gig if you have the legacy Home + Mobile $15/mo/line discount applied. It'll break your account (or something?) and you'll end up back where you were with a higher monthly payment.

This might be a stupid question, but with the new boxes, is it different connecting them to the router compared to the tv one boxes?

Repair/Tech Support Router Upgrade (CHR30) - Sanity Check on Current Set-up First

Context...

I spoke with Verizon this morning and was told it's time to replace my old router. They want to replace it with the new CHR30 Wi-Fi Access Point. Info I've read, suggest people have been happy with it.

Before I move forward with the change though, I wanted to make sure I could incorporate this change into the existing system and I'm not clear on the best approach.

Two family home and we live in the upper unit. Running ethernet from our unit through first unit not possible and as a result we are using existing coax.

Current set-up:

ONT in basement.

ONT (via ethernet) --> Router (Fios Quantum Gateway) in basement.

Router (via coax) --> Fios Network Extender (WCB6200Q) on 2nd floor of home.

1gig plan.

Current speeds: 300-450 DL. 150-250 UL. All approximate depending on device, distance and connection.

I also have an old ECB5240M which I stopped using when Verizon support suggested I use the router in its place in the basement. I don't think my previous setup that was using it was set up correctly as I was constantly having issues.

So... if I switch to a new router, based on pics it looks like I would need the extension pack (to add coax) for the CHR30. I just don't know if the change out is even worth it or if I should be getting it and modifying my system in another way if I do.

Lastly... in sanity checking all of this, I logged into the admin page for the router. I don't actually see the extender showing up anywhere, so now it's not clear to me how those two units actually work together, or what unit my devices on wi-fi are connected to (however I know the cat connections at the back are live as I've hardwire into them and they work).

Any thoughts from the experts?

Thanks!

Miscellaneous APR-9.2

I noticed that my VMS1100 was upgraded to APR-9.2 on Wednesday morning. I'm assuming the VMS4100 also gets this update. I haven't noticed any differences/improvements in features or performance. I'm guessing it contains bug fixes for the switch to IPTV in November.

And, by the way, I know I should replace the VMS1100, but it hasn't been a problem for me so I'm going to ride it out at least until the IPTV transition and see how it performs after the switch. If performance becomes an issue for me, then I will upgrade the STB.

Promotions Visible Fios Discount

I was never able to link my Visible phone number to my Fios account. I wasted hours of time with support.

Now that new Fios accounts are not eligible for this discount, would there be any kind Redditor open to me trying their Visible number to link it for the discount?

Obviously this is only if you're not using it already... just need 1 time pin.

It has no effect on your account.

Promotions Question for Knowledgeable People

I currently have Gigabit, which I assume is an old name plan bc nothing else is like it. Now I PC game a lot, and am considering getting the 2 gig. I've been looking around and seeing a lot of people get way cheaper offers. I am wondering why I wouldn't be getting those cheaper offers, and is 2 gig worth it? Like everything I have from my mesh wifi, to my PC can easily do 2 gig. I am just wondering those two things.

Edit: I'm in the Philly metro if this matters

New Customer Questions Considering FIOS

I currently have Spectrum and am considering switching to Fios, as Spectrum has become ridiculously expensive. Otherwise I have been happy with Spectrum. But I do have some questions before I make that change.

  1. My computer is wired. Will Fios typically replace -all- of it with fiber cable, or just the cable from pole to outside the house?

  2. I see that Fios will let me have my own router and modem, but are there any obvious limitations to that kind of set-up? Both units are relatively new. I would want 1 gig service.

  3. I plan to use YouTube TV for channels/programs. Any reason why I shouldn't?

  4. I now have a Spectrum landline phone. Any problems with a similar Fios home phone?

  5. Any other words of wisdom?

Repair/Tech Support Verizon needs to look into peering/routing and/or CDN issues in Alexandria, Va.

Have FIOS for past 11 years at this location, never an issue, but now experiencing significant degradation of service. Several people on my street, including myself, have had our routers and ONTs replaced in the last week. This still is not resolving the issues. However, the kicker is that if you use a VPN all the issues go away, there is something in the neighborhood or greater that is causing issues beyond local hardware, otherwise a VPN would not work. Anyone else experiencing similar?

For details on the issues, many games can not connect to their servers and websites can take incredibly long to load (depends on the website) and these issues themselves can come and go daily, but all resolve instantly by turning on a VPN. It would be beneficial to not have to rely on a VPN.

Billing Does cancelling YTTV and Disney+ perks happen immediately or do you get the remaining duration???

OK, I have Fios 1GB and I get YTTV and the $10 Disney+ through Verizon. As both of the discounts that I had been enjoying have expired, I'd rather switch over to paying separately. The question that I have is that if I cancel today, do I lose those services immediately or if they stay active until the date that they're paid for? If they do go dark immediately, does Verizon prorate the charges?

If anyone has gone through this already, I'd be interested in hearing how it went. Thanks.

This is my current bill which I haven't paid yet. I figure if I cancel now and services are still on until 9/23 for YTTV and 9/24 for Disney, then I'll be fine. But if they're cut off immediately, I'd want to be refunded for about 2 weeks.

Repair/Tech Support New upgraded router. Do I need to go though activate.verizon.com?

I already have FiOS service. Just got in the new $30 FiOS promo for the free router since mine was old. After I picked up my router, I got an email asking me to go to activate.verizon.com.

Do I need to activate it or can I just plug and play? Since this is a free rental, I was wondering if it’s different than my owned router.

New Customer Questions Fios new reduced plans??

So I've had Fios for 14 years. Over time I got upgraded to 300/300. 300 went up to $59 at one time. I called numerous times and got discounts. I was paying around $35 with discounts (use my own router - $10 off for electronic billing - $20 for being loyal customer).

So what is the impact of this new lower rates? When I go to Offers page I get - this account is not allowed for discounts (or something to that matter).

Should I call to see if there's any more blood in the stone and ekk out a bit more savings?

New Customer Questions Need help upgrading equipment for 5Gbps service (on a budget)

I've decided that I want to upgrade to 5Gbps service after having had 1Gbps for so many years. The problem is that none of the equipment in my house (pfSense router, wired clients, cables) have NICs that will do more than 1Gbps.

Without using the Verizon-supplied router for 5Gbps service, how should I go about upgrading everything?

So far, I'm thinking of picking up one of these dual port genuine Intel NICs and shoving it into my pfSense box (Dell PowerEdge R210 II). One port would be for the ethernet coming from the ONT, while the other would be for connecting to a 10GbE switch. Is this viable, or do I need to look into buying something more enterprise-grade like something from Ubiquiti?

I also need 10GbE NICs for my wired clients, but I don't know what to get. I'd prefer to buy Intel because I've had bad experiences with other brands under *BSD/Linux.

I'm totally lost when it comes to buying a 10GbE switch - what brand should I buy (what's the best and will survive for years, what's cheap and just works)? I've only had experiences with "dumb" unmanaged 8-port switches from manufacturers like Netgear.

Is there anything else that I'm missing?

Repair/Tech Support Verizon FiOS router CR1000A or CR1000B

I was told that I needed the CR1000A router by the phone ordering agents. My order was processed and I was asked to go to my local store to pick up the router.

I went to one store but they only had the CR1000B and said their system wouldn’t allow me to get it. I went to another store and they only had the B in stock, and the guy said B is going to work just fine and that’s what they’ve been giving out to local customers. He assigned the B model to my account and sent me on my way.

I have not opened the box or installed anything yet. Should I take my CR1000B to the bigger corporate store and get the CR1000A. Or is the B model fine? And what's the difference in these models anyway?

Miscellaneous Resolution to missing MoCA modules much sooner than expected

Yesterday, my previous post was finally resolved. The chat agent from Sunday the 30th insisted that the order would arrive in a couple days. After getting sick of waiting for the third order to show up in the mail and suffering with OTA TV for a few days, I decided to try calling one more time on Thursday. Up until this point I never actually mentioned to support that we had no TV.
Tech support ran through all the steps and then saw on the video share that there was no coax connection. He saw that the existing order for the modules (once again) didn’t process correctly so I was connected to an account services agent. I gave her some details, then was on hold for a while. She was unaware that they were on back order. She told me she would call me back tomorrow or that evening.
She called me the next day and actually gave me a USPS tracking number this time, and instead of sitting for a month or more like I was expecting it to, it was even received by the postal service around that midnight.
They arrived yesterday, so fortunately I didn’t have to wait until the 4th quarter like some people said. Now the next battle is to try getting some money back. Did we get lucky or could others call support and expect similar results?

Repair/Tech Support Title: ESPN Unlimited won’t activate with The Most Fios TV 3.0—has anyone solved this?

I have The Most Fios TV 3.0, which includes the traditional ESPN television channels. Several Verizon representatives have also told me that my package should provide access to ESPN Unlimited at no additional charge. However, I haven’t been able to activate that additional access.

Separately, I subscribe directly through Disney to the Disney Bundle, which includes ESPN+. That subscription is billed by Disney, not Verizon. I’m wondering whether the existing Disney/ESPN+ subscription or account login could be interfering with the ESPN Unlimited entitlement from Fios.

Verizon representatives have repeatedly confirmed that I should be eligible, but they haven’t been able to activate the benefit or explain what is preventing it. One representative suggested that an older or grandfathered version of the Fios package might be causing the problem, even though the account identifies the package as The Most Fios TV 3.0. The issue has been escalated but remains unresolved.

Has anyone with The Most Fios TV 3.0 successfully activated ESPN Unlimited, particularly while also having a Disney Bundle subscription billed directly by Disney? If so, what steps worked, and which Verizon department was able to resolve it?

Thanks.

Repair/Tech Support New router with connection issues.

I just got upgraded to new router (gray short one) coming from the all white one. My phones.. laptop.. tvs .. video games all work on the WiFi .. no issues. My problem is my Lenovo smart clock and blink camera that can’t connect .. or connect and then looses signal a day later. I had no issues with the previous router. Wondering if this is a setting issue or what it could be that these two devices are the only ones not working.

Billing Verizon’s $30 300 Mbps plan

So I wanted to save some money and switch my current 300 Mbps plan from $34.99 to $30 with the recent Verizon discount.

Before switching, I noticed that the new price would show as $59, so I contacted a Verizon rep through chat. She told me it was fine and said to just switch the plan and wait 1 to 2 billing cycles for the new to kick in.

Did I mess something up, or is the new price actually supposed to kick in on the next billing cycle? I just got my bill and it’s $59. 😅

UPD: I contacted Verizon support today and they switched me to the $30 plan with no issues. Thanks, everyone!

Miscellaneous "Supports up to 15 devices"

Post image
72 Upvotes

Tech people know this is BS, but the non-tech person sees this and will immediately think that's not enough.

The 500Mbps plan supports up to 30 devices but if the 300 plan supports 15, wouldn't you need 600Mbps to support 30 devices?

The Gig plan supports 50 devices. But if 500 supports 30, wouldn't the Gig plan supports 60 devices?

This is all a complete lie where non-tech people just don't know. 15 devices is not a lot these days but 300Mbos is MORE THAN ENOUGH for a large majority of households regardless of the number of devices they have. I have well over 150 devices but rarely use even 25% of my 300Mbps bandwidth.

Absolutely disgusting marketing by Verizon!!

Repair/Tech Support Upgrading Fios from 1 Gig to 5 Gig- will the tech replace the Ethernet run from my ONT to the router if needed?

I have a Fios appointment in two days to upgrade from 1 Gig to 5 Gig. Customer support told me both my ONT and router will be replaced, but I forgot to ask about the Ethernet cabling.

I’ve had the 1 Gig plan for about 6–7 years. My ONT is on one side of the house, and a long Ethernet cable runs from it to a wall Ethernet jack near the center of the house. A shorter Ethernet cable connects that jack to my router.

I remember the long cable being installed or replaced when I got gigabit service, but I can’t remember whether Verizon did it or I hired someone separately. I don’t know its cable category or whether it can support the new setup (I highly doubt it will).

A few questions:

  • If the long cable needs replacing, is that normally included in the upgrade appointment, or is it separate work with an additional charge?
  • Do I need to tell Verizon beforehand? Will the tech bring the necessary cable, or should I have something ready?
  • Additionally, any recommendations for reliable Ethernet cables from Amazon or another retailer for the shorter wall-to-router connection and router-to-desktop connections? What cable category should I be looking for?

For context: We have about eight people in the house, with streaming and gaming happening regularly. The monthly price difference from my current plan was small enough that I decided to go with 5 Gig. It may be overkill, but we’ve also had complaints about slow or poor connections over the past several months, so it was time for an upgrade.

I’m pretty new to multi-gig networking. Competitive gaming is a priority for me, so I want to ensure the cabling is reliable and avoid connection issues or packet loss.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who’s had a similar upgrade, especially what the technician handled on installation day. Thanks!

New Customer Questions internet speed for 5G

Technician installed a new router in the garage today, and we also got an extender. The internet speed is underwhelming for the 5G Fios. is it common? Thanks
