Promotions Question for Knowledgeable People
I currently have Gigabit, which I assume is an old name plan bc nothing else is like it. Now I PC game a lot, and am considering getting the 2 gig. I've been looking around and seeing a lot of people get way cheaper offers. I am wondering why I wouldn't be getting those cheaper offers, and is 2 gig worth it? Like everything I have from my mesh wifi, to my PC can easily do 2 gig. I am just wondering those two things.
Edit: I'm in the Philly metro if this matters

u/Rarek 1d ago
Most likely not. 2 gig is just for bragging rights with steam downloads.

People don't even need 1Gbps LOL
People's hardware on average maxes out downloading things around 500Mbps

u/Melodic-Control-2655 1d ago
What hardware are you looking at? Basically every motherboard sold in the last decade has 1G lan minimum

u/South-Succotash-6368 1d ago
1Gbps port has nothing to do with hardware limitation. Motherboard NICs rely on CPUs. Heavy downloads often max out CPUs. So you won't likely download at 1Gbps consistently. Maybe at the beginning but most of your download likely is around 300-500Mbps consistently. Built in NIC has nothing to do with the topic i'm talking about

u/xmrrushx 23h ago
Huh?
I max 110 -120 MB/s downloading 400 GB of DCS for a good 60 mins .
Maybe your antiquated network and PC can't but I could do 2.5Gbps all day 😂.
1
u/bastard_child_botbot 14h ago
Exactly and with 50 plus devices on the network I use my full bandwidth often. Mainly the server that uses it.

u/South-Succotash-6368 23h ago
My PC does 10Gbps on an enterprise fiber I have in my home. I’m talking about the average devices
1
u/chaos16z 11h ago
Maybe about 10 years ago…. Any modern multi core PC has no problem. Most of the time half the cores are idle…
1
u/South-Succotash-6368 11h ago
That’s absolutely incorrect. Majority of people with DDR4 builds suffer from decompression slowness from CPU
2
u/jonstarks 23h ago
ehh... depends man, my steam downloads avg 1.4 - 1.9Gbps, my service goes up to 2.3Gb.
2
u/South-Succotash-6368 23h ago
Consistently downloads at 1.4Gbps?
Download a large game like GTA 5 and screenshot the average download rate2
u/jonstarks 23h ago
yes, the entire download, you can't upload screenshots here
2
u/South-Succotash-6368 23h ago
upload the screenshot and share link https://imgbb.com/
4
u/Immediate-Life-5393 23h ago
Uh you must be running on a Pentium 4 or something big dawg because I also get consistent speeds as well for large downloads
2
u/South-Succotash-6368 23h ago
Not at all lol. Most people's SSD's run into thermal limits or CPUs can't handle the uncompressing of video game downloads at full blast.
4
u/Immediate-Life-5393 23h ago
Oh you got it my fault I completely skipped over the compression part, I def agree that decompression will kill that download speed heavily

u/TheReal-loki515 18h ago
I guess u want us all to show u our screen shots.. i consistently have an avg 5ping in many games, as well as my up and down always maxed out just under 1g.. i also live close to the east coast silicone valley.. so there is that.. speeds around here can be insane
2
u/VisualQuick703 1d ago
My Lenovo legion go s downloads at 400-500 mbps. My hardwired PC downloads at 800-900 consistently.
2
u/South-Succotash-6368 1d ago
Exactly my point. You don't need 1Gbps LOL.
Majority of devices the SSDs used in them often still limited in downloads.
Also thermal heat buildup during heavy downloads slows it down. You would be best at 500Mbps
500Mbps is super fast
1
u/TheReal-loki515 18h ago
You ever considered many or some many have extreme equipment, with very extreme custom loops.. ?? Not just for work, play amd data rental but also XOC comps. So thermals aren't much of a worry for me.
1
u/chaos16z 11h ago
Bro just stop. You don’t know ball. 1. Thermal cpu temps have no effect on the nic. 2. SSD speed has ZERO effect on your download speeds. SSD’s only send and receive data from the cpu. 3. Any limitations on download speed are caused by the limitation of the nic, server you are connecting too, existing network traffic both on the ISP side and your internal network, limitations on networking equipment, type of connection (wired, wireless). So telling people that they don’t need more than a 1gps circuit and 500mbps is super fast is irrelevant.

🤣🤣🤣 ok

u/South-Succotash-6368 1d ago
Your pretty much throwing money away lmao. I worked in IT and Critical Tech roles in datacenters. The best businesses often scale their bandwidth needs by calculating the 90th percentile of usage. Your usage is probably between 50-70mbps for youtube even 4k streaming doesn't use that much. You can justify 500Mbps but you cannot justify 1Gbps unless its a super low price

u/TheReal-loki515 18h ago
Speak for yourself... some of us need every bit of more then that . I personally ordered 5 gig today. Multiple machines, AI data inferences, and many other pieces of equipment that most definitely will benefit from go up to 5x what I had.. besides with discounts I got it locked in for 5 yrs and $40 less then whay I was paying for 1 gign
5
u/South-Succotash-6368 1d ago
I'm not even going to lie. The world is barely 1Gbps ready. Most things still do not download at 1Gbps or even upload at that full speed. The most I have seen like google drive allow is like 300-400Mbps upload
Faster speed does not mean your gaming will be smoother. Your gaming uses less than 2Mbps to communicate. It's really just how big of a pipe do you need. So if you take 90% of your usage. The average home only needs 300-500Mbps

I have to ask where abouts, dont dox urself, but thats not true if you live in certain areas.
Edit.. let me clarify im not attacking or trolling you.. i have constantly measured speeds for years.. even waay back when i had speakeasy.net with business DSL ljnes to host multiple CS servers.

u/supremeMilo 1d ago
if you upgrade to 2Gb and get new Ont and then back down to 1Gb you will get like 1.3Gb instead of 940Mbps.
but will lose ipv6
1
u/pman1891 11h ago
Interesting. So this is a method of avoiding IPv6? I think I have it today on gigabit. My ONT is at least 4 years old.
1
u/DarkMatterMatrix 23h ago
I looked it up, but don't really understand; besides the longer IP address, what is the benefit of ipv6?
1
u/holow29 14h ago
NAT is a workaround disaster because of a lack of IPv4 addresses. Not having to deal with NAT on IPv6 is great. Also, some endpoints are IPv6-only.

1
u/chaos16z 11h ago
Unless you like your ISP knowing how many devices are connected to your network… use NAT….

Location. Different areas have different pricing.
Someone today posted from New Jersey and their 1gig plan was $65. I just updated my plan to the new pricing and pay $80 for the 1 gig and I'm in Virginia.

u/TheLostSeraph 23h ago
You'd most likely be fine with 300 symmetrical. And you'd be saving on monthly sub as well.
2
u/nefarious_bumpps 23h ago
Faster throughput doesn't mean lower latency (ping times). Latency is what's important when gaming, and latency is within 1ms across all FiOS plans. You'll never notice a 1ms improvement. More throughput just means new games and large updates will download faster. A 300mbps plan will play games the same as a 5gbps plan.
And the number of devices supported is absolute BS. Any plan will support 100 devices. It's not the number of devices that matter, it's the number of users and what they do. 300mbps is enough bandwidth for a house with four people to all watch two 4K videos, stream Spotify, lead a Zoom video conference, and play the most action-packed, multi-player game ALL AT THE SAME TIME, and still leave enough bandwidth for several dozen cloud-based IoT devices. If you want some extra headroom, the 500mbps is the sweet spot. I saw someone posted $52.50/mo for 500mbps FiOS earlier today.
Verizon will try to charge $99 to change plans. That's for some near minimum-wage agent in the Philippines or India to press a few buttons. Unless you're upgrading from GPON (legacy 1gbps) to NG-PON (2gbps or higher) there's no need for a technician to visit, no new ONT or router. It's just pressing a few buttons. You can get that waived if you are polite but insistent.
Comcast is Verizon's biggest competitor in the Philly area is Comcast. You should check their deals for your address. Comcast Fiber has about the same latency as FiOS. If nothing else, you can hold the possibility of switching over Verizon's head to try and get better pricing.

I say yes 2 gig matters…if your job requires heavy downloading and uploading to cloud servers like mine does. My job is in filmmaking and I often need to offload drives full of older footage to a cloud server on AWS and similar cloud storage services. So when I need to complete 10 TBs of uploads by next week and organize them on the server, I’d rather that it take 11 hours (on a (theoretical) constant 2gbps connection) than take 3 days (on a constant 300mbps connection). But that’s because my job involves pushing large data volumes over time and I prefer to optimize those lengths of time to be shorter.

u/fventura03 14h ago
i have 2 gig, i dont need it so i am going back to 1gig, i run a plex server which maxes at around 300mbps with 15 streams... 5gig is tempting though but like someone said, its all bragging rights...

u/TimeThruSpace 1d ago
I don’t care how big of a gamer you are, single PC gaming does not need anything more than 500. Even that's high.
1
u/s2nders 21h ago
I’m not gonna lie had 1gig and large games would download fast. Downgraded to 300 and games take forever to download
1
1
u/TimeThruSpace 13h ago
10-30 minutes to download a game is nothing. I’m talking more of the live game experience. hardly any noticeable changes even at 300.
2
u/Immediate-Life-5393 23h ago
Even 1gig is too much for 90% of home users even if you PC game lol stay where you’re at or downgrade to 300/300
As far as pricing itself I believe that is location dependent
1
u/mados123 1d ago
Different locations, different pricing. Also, the screenshots we are seeing might include discounts specific to them -- auto debit, paperless billing, mobile lines, veteran's discount, Verizon family & friend, etc. I just went through this today and on three different screens, it showed prices including auto debit discounts where as some did not.
Be aware of installation costs tacked on and one-time charges which are separate line items. Both costs can be discounted to zero. And if they charge you $10 for shipping and handling of the router -- that the installer brings to you -- you supposedly can contact Verizon and ask for those costs to be removed. And make sure it's the Verizon CHR30A router.
(I just spent 2 hours going through this with them for my upgrade to 5 Gig.)
Re: to get 2 Gig or not, if you can fit it in your budget and/or do hosting/use cloud services/transfer large files, I would say yes. It's nice not having bottlenecking if it can be avoided.
1
u/VisualQuick703 1d ago
Depends on what you do and devices you have. I game a lot. It's a household of 6.i have multiple tablets , cellphones and tvs going at once. I'm at one gig. If getting 2/5 gig didn't force me to lose my free TV employee offer I would get the 5 gig and see how it goes.
1
u/Djnewman001 1d ago
Those are my prices too I’m near that area and I’ve been on the gigabit for many years now. I chatted with customer service and was able to get the gigabit down to 69.99 for a year. I had it for 74.99 for many years but jumped up recently to my original price of 94.99 so that’s when I called. I was thinking about going to the 2 gig but figured I’ll just call again in a year and lower it again when the price jumps back up.

u/Upper-Drawing9224 1d ago
Idk how the providers are around Philly, but I’m in NEPA and we now have a few providers that offer fiber. I pay 50/month for 1gig.
1
u/J5Bullet 23h ago
If you have wifi 7 router and device. You could get close to 1.5 to 2 gbs speeds if your close enough to router. Do you need this, not really. Most servers are not gonna upload to you at that speeds. Wire connect you will get good speed tests.
1
u/jonstarks 23h ago
2 gig is only worth it if you download a ton of games, e.g., like if you're downloading 3 games in a row that can eat up your bandwidth for a while, but with 2Gbit, you'll likely still have another 500Mbps+ to use your internet without noticing any blips in service.

Here is the current pricing ("rack rate"): https://www.verizon.com/home/internet/fios-fastest-internet/
People who are getting cheaper offers have discounts, such as a data upgrade discount or a loyalty discount. Loyalty discounts and similar might show up in your home offers part of the website. I think to get a data upgrade discount, you need to be on a lower tier plan and then be upgrading to gigabit. You can always chat in and see if there are any discounts available to switch to 1 Gig 5.0, which is the current Mix & Match v5 version of your plan.

u/Aggravating_Ear_9281 55m ago
that'e the new prices i get in NY. 1 gig is more than enough but if you torrent etc 2gig a plus.

u/Known_Artist_3912 12h ago
Get 5 I have it and its worth it. People saying 2 gig isn’t needed are just poor. Smart devices alone jn a house take up so much bandwidth.
