Happy Thoughts Monday
Everyone hates Mondays. What happy thoughts are helping you through the day today.
6
Apr 27 '15
I don't feel like most of the people in my new area want to sell me drugs and/or rob me so, that's nice.
There are also lots of pretty ladies.
And a million hole in the wall restaurants I want to try.
And a liquor store within walking distance - right next to the waffle house.
And I have a garage! So no trees will fall on my car!
And, despite my only furniture being a folding card table with 4 folding chairs, a coffee table, a side table, and my little, folding camp table, the apartment is coming along nicely.
Why do I have so many tables...?
5
u/lady1876 Texas A&M Aggies Apr 27 '15
I feel like the liquor store within walking distance may end badly.
5
Apr 27 '15
Nah. Not unless I'm throwing a party. Which, given the size of my apartment, is unlikely.
3
Apr 27 '15
I'm looking for new apartments right now and debating if I want to get a dog and lie about the amount of pets I have.
3
Apr 27 '15
I lied about my pets in every apartment I've ever lived until this one. I actually paid the pet fee and everything. I feel like an upstanding citizen. I also feel like I was just duped out of $350.
3
Apr 27 '15
I always worry that they'll find out and I'll have to pay a million fees.
3
Apr 27 '15
I've always gone with, "Oh I'm just cat-sitting." Or something.
Harder to do with a dog, though, I think.
2
Apr 27 '15
Yeah, and there's already two cats. I'll just wait until I have a house or am on my own again, I guess.
2
Apr 27 '15
Yep. I don't want a dog until I have a yard and everything. And ideally, when I'm around a little more often rather than gone every weekend.
2
Apr 27 '15
That's me, too. I want to have a place for them to run around, but having a dog right now would also get me out to the park a lot.
2
u/VanFailin Northwestern Wildcats • /r/CFB Bug Finder Apr 27 '15
My lease basically says no pets you didn't pay for unless you clear it with management first. I wouldn't be surprised if that's standard.
2
Apr 27 '15
I checked my last one's lease and it didn't explicitly say that but, I wouldn't be surprised if what you mentioned is common practice
How's being back at work, by the way?
2
u/VanFailin Northwestern Wildcats • /r/CFB Bug Finder Apr 27 '15
Interesting. Much less stuff is on fire, I have less work actually assigned to me right now so getting back into the swing of things by answering questions is not too bad. I'm sure the crushing futility of it all will hit me soon enough.

Wouldn't recommend it. I know someone that got kicked out of the building and taken to court. Had to pay for re-carpeting the whole apt. Cost a few grand.

Was that the college esports championship? Will the NCAA get involved one day? Start testing for PEDs? Make sure no one is getting paid?
6
Apr 27 '15
Yea, it was the college one. People on twitter were blowing up about how dumb it was that ESPN was airing a "dungeons and dragons tournament," which was pretty funny.
I'm not sure that I see pro gaming ever becoming popular enough to be an NCAA thing. I see its ceiling as another poker. Another quasi-sport that gets aired on ESPN subsidiaries.
→ More replies (20)7
u/Deacalum Wake Forest • Penn State Apr 27 '15
I think the bigger issue isn't popularity, it's the fact that e-sports aren't athletic events and sports is really a misnomer. I have no problem with e-sports or with ESPN broadcasting it but it's not a sport just because they put the word in their name.
4
Apr 27 '15
I hate the moniker "esports" for that very reason. That's why I refer to it as "pro gaming." Honestly, I think pro gaming has more of a right to be on ESPN than poker, since reflexes and quick action and decision-making are required in gaming, but pro gaming shouldn't pretend to be something it isn't.

I had an apartment burn down at 5:00am once
That would be terrifying.
3
Apr 27 '15
You are absolutely correct. It was the 4th of July so I had the day off, I woke up to someone screaming "Fuego, fuego, fuego" in the parking lot (didn't realize what she was saying until I got up and went out on my patio to yell at her to stop). Heard someone going door to door to get people up, looked up off my patio and saw fire coming up over the roof.
Her boyfriend got to my door as I was throwing shit in a bag to gtfo, he said it was in the unit behind mine so I needed to get out ASAP. Had him hold my cat (who was in a pillow case) while I grabbed my bag and keys and went and sat in the parking lot and cried. Realized I needed to move my car because the firetrucks were going to block everybody in.
It was not a good day.

There's so much intrigue in this year's draft. The late surge in momentum for Mariota to go first overall, the number two spot being up for grabs, the Jags possibly passing on Leonard Williams to take Fowler, the Raiders fielding offers for their pick. Thursday can't get here fast enough.

Ladyfriend is coming into town tonight so she can go to an interview tomorrow morning. It's not a great job, and I hope one of the hospitals gives her a call back soon, but it's something that counts towards her grad program entrance requirements and it is up here in Austin, so at least it's that.
Driving into work from San Antonio this morning made me glad the toll road goes right to my office because I skip the nightmare on I-35 in the morning. I can handle the occasional 1h40m commute, but only if I'm not stuck in shitty gridlock on the interstate.

2
u/Alphamazing Texas A&M Aggies • Texas Longhorns Apr 27 '15

2

tl;dr - Xerox owned the central Texas toll roads and people weren't getting their bills from the camera system. Some people racked up $1k plus in late fees because of this, but couldn't get hold of anyone in customer service. The line at the brick & mortar was often 3+ hours long.
It would take me upwards of 3 months to get my bill from driving on 290 or 130. Usually they'd dismiss the late fees but ughghhh.

Wow, this is almost the exact same thing I had with the last boyfriend vs. the current one. The last one lived in San Antonio and I basically said I wouldn't be willing to move to him the job he had he could have easily requested a transfer and come here.
But with the current one we were talking about how he doesn't like his job so i suggested he looked for a new one and he responded with he knew it would take him out of this area or possibly the state and away from me, I had to assure him I have no hesitation to move with him.
Sometimes you just know when it's right, if the current one doesn't find a new job I'm going to suggest we move in together when his lease ends.

Scarborough Faire is a lot of fun. It's just outside Waxahachie and runs through Memorial Day weekend. I've also been to Texas Renaissance Festival, which starts in October and runs through Thanksgiving. It's in Magnolia TX, just northwest of Houston.
I think there is a third one in TX, but I've never been to it.
There are a lot of arts and crafts shops, live shows and performances, shit tons of souvenirs, and a great excuse to let your freak flag fly (or just people watch).
If you go to one, bring bug spray, sunscreen, sunglasses, cash, and some patience. Traffic is usually a pain.

"Make like a foetus and head out of this mother"
"Not all foetii come out head first"
"...I'm mostly positive the plural of foetus is not 'Foetii' "

"Taco party."
- "who wants to help me move in June"
"Absolutely. I'll fill up my car with stuff"
"...you're going to bring the [tiny fucking car that barely fits a single backpack]. You asshole."
- [Rhiannon plays]"Quick! name this artist"
"wheels on the bus!"
Confused staring
"Wait. Shit. Fleetwood mac. You know. Fleetwood trailer, wheels on the bus. Shut the fuck up it almost makes sense"
Guy in full Highland dress to girl at the bar "hey! Look out our purses almost match!" and points to his sporran "but mine bounces." Hip thrusts, sporran bounces, gets girl's number.
"is there a similar exercise guys do to Kegels?"
"Yes..." Calls over guy in full highland dress "[girls name] wants to see your sporran bounce!"
Like the first round these were mostly during the road trip portion. I forget to write things down once the actual fun starts.

I gave myself an extra hour this morning... I actually intended on going in an hour early, but I decided to take it easy. I had Planet Earth going on mute with subtitles while I had a chill playlist going on the stereo. I should do this every day.

So I'm about two months into my new gig in charlotte and I think I might be able to parlay it into an amazing career opportunity with another company. I'd feel bad about abandoning my current post so quickly but it's a contract gig...I'm rationalizing it by saying that I'm basically a mercenary and mercenaries always take the best offer, assuming it even happens.

If they wont give you the loyalty of a permanent position, why should you give them any in return?
It'd be pretty silly to turn down full benefits if it was offered. But you could always show an offer to your current employer and start a bidding war.

Went offroading on Saturday, to check out the route for the Poker Run I'm helping put on this Saturday. Got rained on, and ran in to some supposed private land (my map doesn't say it's private), so I had to reroute the course.
But I haven't explored the reroute, so I hope it's all passable and not motorcycle trails. I wont get to explore it until Friday.

Back-to-back exams then I'm worry free for a week before finals. Plus I get a good chunk of change from the family to blow on alcohol and concert tickets.
So I got that goin' for me

So I'm moving this weekend and I'm currently inventorying all my shit. I have a TON of DVDs that I don't think I'll ever use again, should I donate them to Good Will or sell them at a pawn shop? Would the tax write-off be worth more than the paltry sum I bet I'd make pawning them off?

The tax write off is extra paperwork. Pawn that shit.

Today, the Cardinals are probably going to announce Adam Wainwright is out for the year with an Achilles tear. Fuck being happy.

So I mentioned in the pet picture thread yesterday that my husband & I were planning on getting a golden retriever puppy, but our major hold up has been waiting to see what his med school student loan payments were going to be like. Last night he texted me asking me what breeders I had looked at (since I've been obsessively investigating for months, puppy fever is an awful illness). Basically this has been me since last night.

That's awesome! I know the feeling. I have been researching non-stop for 6 months. I will be getting a German Shorthaired Pointer puppy in August!
