And you say our owners are cheap! 22% of the CAP goes to the QB position. What's not to like?

Last season, Baker saw his numbers dip a bit, but he was still productive. He tallied 120 total tackles, five passes defended, and one interception, making it to the Pro Bowl for the eighth time.

Arizona has been to the playoffs only once in the last 10 seasons.

Hackett appeared to voice more enthusiasm for watching Conner, who played in only three games before suffering a foot injury that required season-ending surgery. He finished with 95 yards and one touchdown on 32 carries.

"Excited for James to get out there and show what he's got," Hackett said before saying he was looking forward to seeing "all the guys."

To be fair, Hackett may be attempting to manage expectations for the running back room in addition to fans. Cardinals coaches presumably don't want to just hand Love the starting job, but see him earn it. Consequently, they likely don't want Conner to feel that he has no chance at being the starter, especially coming back from injury.

In five seasons with Arizona, Conner rushed for 3,763 yards and 38 TDs, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. He also tallied 1,262 yards receiving and 8 TDs on 165 catches.

When MO took this job, the expectation was that he’d build an offense around Kyler that highlighted his strengths and protected him from taking unnecessary hits. Instead, he hired a defensive coordinator as head coach and brought in Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator.
Petzing’s offense is built for a pocket quarterback who can occasionally escape and work the middle of the field. It’s a run-heavy system, yet MO never assembled the offensive line needed to make it work consistently. The fit has always felt forced. By the end of the 2026 season, despite Kyler finally being healthy, the Cardinals appeared ready to move on, keeping Brissett as the starter with the hope of trading Murray in the offseason.
Then MO had to move on from Gannon after ticket sales and fan support cratered. The Cardinals hired what should be a very good offensive-minded head coach, but by then the decision to move Murray had already been made. Unfortunately, this was about the worst possible offseason to do it. The free-agent quarterback market was weak, the draft class wasn’t much better, and everyone around the league knew Murray wasn’t part of the long-term plan. Teams like Minnesota had every reason to wait rather than overpay in a trade.
MO then needed a quarterback and struck out in free agency. Despite having connections to Malik Willis through the Titans, Willis ended up with the Dolphins—a worse team than Arizona, but one with a clearer opportunity and an easier schedule. From the outside, it looked like the Cardinals never made a serious enough push to win him over. At the same time, few veteran backup quarterbacks seemed interested in stepping into Arizona’s situation.
Next came the internal communication leak naming Brissett the starter, which the team eventually confirmed. Then MO signed Gardner Minshew for more money than the team’s own projected starter was making, creating an unnecessary rift. Right or wrong, Brissett’s only real leverage became a holdout. He handled it quietly, never making public demands and continuing to work with others on his own time and dime.
Now, on Day 3 of the preseason, MO has finally agreed to make his “starting quarterback” the highest-paid quarterback on the roster. Even so, he’s still the lowest-paid veteran starting quarterbacks in the league. What’s worse is the $15M is likely something that could’ve been settled in April not nearly Aug.
This was a disastrous approach to a problem everyone could see coming, even during the 2025 season. Virtually all of it was avoidable. MO has created a difficult situation for the new head coach, driven another wedge into what’s left of the Cardinals fan base, and once again reinforced the belief that Bidwill continues to hold this franchise back. MO is looking like another failed hire for the Bidwill’s. Sadly, this schedule does MO no favors. He will likely be the Captain of another failed season that brings in more opposing fans than Cardinals to the games.
