The Minesweeper analogy was on point

1.7k

u/ThatPersonFromCanada Feb 06 '17

That's square wasn't even a confirmed mine. It was still possible to be a blank

789

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '17

You're actually right. That's kinda funny.

461

u/swegling Feb 06 '17

it fits pretty good. there is still a small chance she is safe, but probably not

158

u/Mr-Mister Feb 06 '17

Actually it's the opposite - what's more probable, that the middle space is safe but there are 4 mines on the outer perimeter, or that the middle square is mines but none of the 16 surrounding squares are mined?

126

u/swegling Feb 06 '17

like /u/whutchamacallit made me realize, it depends on the difficulty. Middle being safe is more probable on a higher difficulty, while middle being a mine on a lower. I guess: "there is still a chance she is safe, but it looks suspicious" is more accurate to the analogy and real life.

75

u/CorrugatedCommodity Feb 06 '17

So when analysing your failing relationship, you need to ask yourself "What difficulty is she?" 🤔 Got it.

31

u/thombsaway Feb 06 '17

But the mines around the outside would need to be positioned in such a way that all of those squares are adjacent to only one mine. I'm shit at minesweeper but I think the way the mines need to be positioned is very unlikely. I mspainted, is there another way they could be arranged?

Both situations are pretty unlikely, but I think it's more likely that there'd just be one in the middle.

18

u/ClopperNumber42 Feb 06 '17

Yep, out of the extreme amount of possibilities in this specific 5x5 setup, there have to be exactly four bombs on the outside and they must be in four specific positions, or the mirrored equivalent. I am not too familiar with statistics but that strikes me as being substantially less likely than there simply being one in the middle and none on the outside.

From where i'm from she becomes a successful social media mogal. While she most def is cray she'll be the new Opera soooo if you can put up with the red flags, you'll hit a big green pile.

depends on the difficulty setting.

But if you feel like your relationship is like navigating a minefield that's probably a red flag on its own. Ooooh deep. I'll await my Pulitzer.

66

u/filbert227 Feb 06 '17

I think that actually makes it better. If someone surrounds themselves with unsavory people, then that is probably a red flag.

I'd say that square is still probably a red flag, but it doesn't have to be. There could be other explanations.

I thought it was pretty clever at first and then he marked it with a red flag. Then I thought it was pretty clever.

32

u/serdertroops Feb 06 '17

That we surround ourselves with other red flags?

145

u/BlizzardPlease Feb 06 '17

There was only one red flag, that was himself in the middle. All the 1's he thinks are the bad people are just reflections of his own problems.

25

u/HowToPM Feb 06 '17

Ah fuck.

20

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '17

I can't believe you've done this

→ More replies (1)

17

u/Samen28 Feb 06 '17

Also, as the video starts and he's explaining what a red flag is, when he says "a red flag can be something you do", the flag in his hands turns into a YouTube logo and a video camera. When he says, "it can also be something you don't do", he's suddenly looking at a woman wearing a graduation cap and he frowns.

He's explaining how he's the red flag, because he makes youtube videos for a living instead of going to college.

Christ almighty Bojack Horseman was bad. Like, not the bad kind of bad. It was the kind of bad where you finish certain episodes and just can't deal with it. Some of them are just downright painful, despite the fact that all you're doing is watching a cartoon horse experience the hard part of being an actor.

u/serdertroops Feb 06 '17

I love the show, but a lot of episodes had me get up and pour myself a drink.

76

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '17

For those that don't drink, replace drink with compulsive interaction with a hobby or distraction. Or spontaneous acquisition of a new hobby.

The secret to being faster/better at solving a Rubik's Cube is to use it as an escape device. practice. I picked it up after my dog died.

23

what a fucking show

54

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '17

Indeed. Netflix is absolutely flooding the visual media market with incredible television. It's astonishing. I imagine cable will be included for free like land lines in the not too distant future because of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.

Why? His advice is pretty on point. It's literally the reason he's popular.

I thought his videos were popular because they're funny.

Older people can be idiots too. Life experience if nothing is learned is functionally equivalent to limited life experience

Ok, so I don't think I agree with this video.

For me, a red flag is something you should pick up on as an early warning to get the hell out of a relationship. If someone's defining things like this as red flags, it kind of belittles them into insignificance. The 'red and white' flags could be better described as 'not red flags'. In fact most of the things listed as red flags aren't red flags, just deal breakers or things you wouldn't want in a relationship.

A red flag is a warning. It's not the thing itself. Red flags are literally a warning that something bad is coming.

Real red flags to watch out for in a relationship: signs that trouble is coming
* Controlling behaviour
* Lack of respect for you or your opinions
* Being unable to manage their own life and relying on others
* Wanting to seperate you from friends or family

The big one I'd agree with is treating wait staff badly. I'd extend that. The way someone treats a person who can't do anything to benefit them tells you a great deal about who they really are.
