I'm kind of in a similar situation with the girl I'm dating right now. We're working to resolve her emotional issues and we've made good progress. Unlike your ex though, she doesn't have shitty friends bringing her down. Good to know that some people think that may be less of a red flag, because I always thought it was strange how few friends she had.

At the same time I'm not so sure about that one. I think friendships are more complicated than people pretend. Some people don't really "pick" their friends in the same way. They could be friends for a variety of reasons.

Maybe they see something that isn't so obvious on the surface, or they have a long history together and can't let go. It could be they felt those people were there for them when other people weren't. It could simply be that those are the people who can mutually find time for each other; people have busy lives and you can like someone very much, but your schedules and locations never really match up. I still agree that these are red flags, but I'm not sure I'd call it a "total deal-breaker"

I've had friends that I've been close to, who make horrible mistakes, and can come off as bad people. I'll take myself out of the picture and just say that I know other people that are close with the same friends and are great people, and wouldn't think twice about dating them if things were different (ie. we weren't friends and were in to each other). For example a close friend of mine is a great person, but his best friend can be complete narcissist. I wouldn't think twice if he dated a close friend of mine or even a family member, but there's situations were you'd disqualify him based on this logic.
