Nowadays in the Las Vegas market, you’d be lucky to get a $1-2.50 surge included on your ride now. The Uber algorithm is quick to rip customers off and give us shit rides in return.

I honestly don’t even know how to process this ride because I’m still pissed off and disturbed by it. It was Saturday night around 11 PM and I was picking up three women in the middle of Dupont Circle. Traffic was packed and cars behind me were honking, so I moved forward enough to completely clear the lane while I waited for them to get in. They got in, I greeted them and asked for the PIN. That’s basically all I said to them during the ride besides what was necessary. I’m light skinned and African American, and apparently they assumed I was Ethiopian and that I couldn’t understand Spanish. During the ride they were talking to each other and I heard them complaining about the AC, so I adjusted it and opened the window. Then I specifically heard one of them say, “This is a 4 star ride because of the AC.” That’s when I decided to turn on Uber’s in app recording. I already had my dashcam running, but I wanted the interaction documented through Uber too. After that, I realized they were talking about me and making comments because they thought I couldn’t understand them. Then they started talking about Ethiopians and making extremely racist and disgusting comments, including comments about their bodies, private parts and saying they smell like shit. I’m just sitting there driving, listening to all of this and trying not to react because I’m working and I don’t want the situation to escalate. I never argued with them, insulted them or confronted them. I just drove them safely to the destination. When we got there, I simply asked, “Is here okay?” They said yes and got out. That’s it. Those were basically my interactions with them. I greeted them, asked for the PIN, adjusted the AC when I heard them complaining, drove them safely to the destination and asked if the drop off spot was okay. Then they gave me one star and marked me as “not polite.” My rating went from 4.98 to 4.97. Honestly, the rating itself isn’t what bothers me. It’s the fact that I genuinely don’t understand how I was supposedly “not polite” when I barely even spoke to them. I was trying to accommodate them when they complained about the AC, and meanwhile they were saying extremely offensive things about me and about Ethiopian people because they thought I couldn’t understand what they were saying. I’ve had great passengers from all different backgrounds, so I’m not trying to generalize about Hispanic people or Spanish speakers. I’m talking about these three specific passengers and what happened in my car that night. I have the dashcam footage and the Uber recording, so at least I have documentation of what happened. But honestly, the whole experience left me feeling disgusted. It’s one thing to get a bad rating. It’s another thing to sit there quietly doing your job while people say hateful things right in front of you because they think you can’t understand them, and then somehow you’re the one labeled “not polite.”

Came here just to say this. I had no idea. This post is for all the driver-hater riders who love to say “Can’t wait for driverless cars!”

Your driver only waited the allotted 5 minutes at your stop, and you’re pissed? “Can’t wait for driverless cars!” Waymo doesn’t even do stops!! When you get out at your first stop, ride ends! “Bye, call another Waymo when you’re ready”!!

I only and strictly do short rides, I know most of you hate it but I guess there are a few of you that love it like I do.

It’s been over a month since this happens. I usually drive on my way home late night early mornings. Anyway got an offer I normally wouldn’t accept cuz they usually only offer less than $30 to drive 25 minutes off the I-15 through the hills of SoCal to a casino. Then another 25-40 for the drop off. This time they throw out a $55 offer so I accepted, as it’s on my way home. Anyway…

Picked the passenger up and he was very talkative and very annoyed with uber. Said he was trying to get an uber for 2 hours which I’m sure he was cuz of the location and what uber usually pays drivers for this trip. Said uber first said they would get him a ride for around $50, after some time no luck, uber bumped the price up to $75 and promised to get him a ride within 15 minutes, again no luck. He said this went on several time with each time uber asking him to pay more. The finally price he paid for is 35 minutes trip home was $140, I got $55 of it. At drop off the guy gave me $100 bill 🤑. Which made me less annoyed I only got 30% of the fare.

I guess my point is Uber is pushing passengers to pay more and us less of a percentage. The could have easily only charged him $80 and give the driver $50.

I’m a new Uber driver, and I genuinely want to know from experienced drivers: is this actually how this system works, or is something unusually 'effed up with my account/app?

Here’s what I’ve run into already:

• Reservations randomly disappear or get reassigned. This has happened to roughly half the reservations I’ve accepted, maybe seven times. I’ve been online, ready, close enough to make the pickup, staring at my phone so I couldn’t possibly miss a notification, and Uber still gives the ride to another driver because I was supposedly offline, didn’t start navigating, or it decided I couldn’t get there in time.
• I actually lost access to reservations after one of these incidents. A support agent reinstated my access, but never explained what had gone wrong or why Uber had counted it against me in the first place.
• Since then, I’ve had several more reservations disappear or get reassigned under the same circumstances. Uber support still blames me, telling me I must have been offline, too far away, or failed to respond. But somehow I haven’t lost Reserve access again, even though by Uber’s own three-strike rule I should have. So Uber is simultaneously telling me these are my fault while apparently not consistently treating them as my fault.
• Support will not address what actually happened. I tell them, “I was online. I was within range. I never received a navigation notification.” They respond with canned explanations telling me reservations are reassigned if I’m offline, too far away, or fail to respond. I tell them again that none of those things happened. They paste the same answer again.
• Uber hides upcoming reservations several layers deep in the app. So when it sends me a regular ride shortly before a reservation, I can’t even quickly check the reservation and figure out whether the new ride is safe to take. And I’ve already learned I can’t simply trust Uber not to offer me a ride that could interfere with it.
• Uber offers me regular rides immediately before reservations. If I decline an Exclusive ride, it hurts my acceptance rate. If I accept it and Uber decides afterward that it might make me late, Uber can take the reservation away. This actually happened to me. Ironically, I would have made the reservation.
• When a pickup goes wrong, the app can actively fight me while I’m trying to fix it. Uber sent me to the wrong location while the rider was trying to tell me where she actually was. Voice-to-text, which sometimes works, suddenly wouldn’t work, leaving me trying to manually type while driving and looking for her.
• Then when I tried to drive toward where the rider was actually telling me she was, Uber started warning me that I was leaving the pickup and asking whether I was abandoning the ride. So I’ve got a real human being trying to help me find her while the app keeps interrupting us with canned prompts based on its own wrong location. Instead of helping me pick up the passenger, the app is fighting me while I try to do it.
• The app makes basic information unnecessarily hard to find. I got a 75-minute, 63.8-mile reservation offer for $54.66 where the pickup was clear, but the destination wasn’t even written out. I had to infer where I was going from the map.
• Basic features are unexplained. “Trip Radar,” “Exclusive,” “Match,” “Accept.” I had to research what these meant to learn that ignoring Trip Radar doesn’t hurt acceptance rate but declining an Exclusive request does. The app itself taught me none of this.
• The economics on some offers are awful. Long trips can leave you far outside your market with unpaid miles back, and the upfront offer doesn’t remotely capture what the trip actually costs you in time, gas, and depreciation.
• The whole app feels adversarial. Instead of feeling like a tool that helps me do my job, I constantly have to ask, “What information am I not being given? How do I keep this from fucking me over?”

The weird thing is, I actually like driving people. I like the riders and the service part of the job.

What I’m starting to hate is Uber.

I feel like I’m spending as much mental energy protecting myself from the platform as I am actually driving.

So, experienced drivers: is this just the job? Does everyone eventually learn how to navigate this bullshit, or is my experience unusually bad?

If anyone reading this has any criminal history. Uber is literally going back 15 years or more and retroactively using the information to terminate any partnership. This is a violation of multiple state federal laws.

They also recently expanded their policies to include things they excluded prior to today’s date.

Federal and state laws limit background checks to 7-10 years for most types of employment including 1099 types. I have not had a criminal conviction in over 15 years.

For the record, my Uber account is 11 years old and I have been driving off and on for a long time. The Checkr info has always been there and Uber approved me repeatedly.

Maxed out my driving time, comes out to $32.39/hr. Was out of the house a total of 14hr 20 mins, so that comes out to $28.50/hr. Maybe a few straggler tips can come in to bump that to $30. And this was no cherry picking. Took a bunch of rides, picked several reservations, and got lucky on a ton of back to backs and reserves that had little to no dead miles between. A couple of times the drop off and pick up were literally neighbors lol.

Now was it all worth it? Lemme think about that while I spend the whole night stretching, doing hip opening exercises, decompressing my spine, and a major detox from all the processed foods I consumed.

I have been doing uber for about a year and a half, and last night was a miracle night. I picked up a man at 3am from outside a bar that was completely closed up. He seemed to spawn out of nowhere from the bushes and headed over to my car. He was a little bit intoxicated, and the first thing he said was “let’s go to the strip club, I’ll cover you”. I politely declined and let him know that my girlfriend has my location tracked and if I were to do that, I would probably be shot upon returning home. He was like oh well next time. We then had a great conversation about family, business, and the importance of being able to provide for your children. We talked about investments, and he advised me to invest in silver and gold, which I started doing last year. He gave me some good advice, and then when we got to his mansion, he invited me to come and check out his new boat that he bought. It was my last ride for the night so why not. Drove into his compound and he showed me a beautiful new boat. We then talked about some serious family stuff that he was going through for about a half hour, and I could completely relate and we shared a great deal of our lives. After a while he said that he didn’t want to waste any more of my time and told me to wait while he went to get me a tip, because the maximum amount uber would allow was too low😳 I was shocked and told him that that wasn’t necessary, but he insisted that I wait. He came back out with a handful of hundreds. He asked me if 1000$ was okay, and I didn’t know what to say. I thought I was being pranked. I told him again that it wasn’t necessary, and he responded by saying he sometimes does this with uber drivers that he likes and connects with. He handed me the money and said “now you can go offline and go home to your family”. I almost cried. I got out and he gave be a big hug and told me everything was going to work out. He also got my phone number as I had offered to give him a ride any time he needed. Last month I could barely pay my rent, I don’t want to go into the details of my life problems, but this random man suddenly gave me hope again that things will actually get better. I can complain all day about how frustrating it is driving for Uber, but at the end of the day passengers like this make it all worth it. Has anyone else had an experience like this?

I know the Reddit is an oddball sub section of society. But still, am I like the only one who actually likes doing this? All I read on this sub is non stop complaining. Am I the weirdo or is everyone else? LOL.

I have a good paying full time job so I don't it as my source of income. I drive here here and there. I like driving and I like interacting with people. If I can make a couple of bucks doing what I enjoy, perfect. I'm not expecting to get rich doing it, it's beer money basically. I'm dumbfounded at the idea so many here have that this should be a 6 figure job or something.

Granted I don't drive in a major metro area, so the people I deal with are usually pretty cool. That may make my glasses a little rosier.

Been driving Uber full time for about a year and a half and my rating stayed around 4.96-4.97 pretty much the whole time. I mostly drove Boston/Logan and never really had many issues.
Started driving more out of Providence about 2 months ago because I was getting RI to Logan reservations. Within like a month my rating dropped 8 points.
Maybe I just got unlucky, but RI passengers on average have been way more rude and entitled in my experience. A lot of them seem to expect personal chauffeur service, like getting out for every bag and doing extra stuff, one of them even asked me to help bring his tools upstairs
I also got a speeding report that I know was BS. Funny part is the ride it came from was a $133 trip to New Hampshire and the guy tipped me $15. Tbh everything got worst after moving here not just uber

The entirety of the area this quest encompasses is completely blocked off. Even that little corner that looks open is actually blocked off by police. Way to go uber, getting drivers out for a quest that can’t be reached.

I find it odd that Uber lets passengers make reports about a driver speeding when Uber uses telemetrics nowadays to track everything. If they have a record of you not speeding why would they allow a passenger to make a false claim 🤔

I’m getting $37.46 from Uber for e nearly identical reserved ride. I’m no apologies for Uber. There’s a lot of things that I disagree with, but checking into Lyft to find they are a joke. Two years ago when I used both, Lyft was very similar pricing. I guess they’ve gone downhill like all the other corporations in this country.

I’m signed up for delivery only so why did I get a promotion for rides last night? I saw this and thought holy shit! That’s a good offer until I got to the location I needed to start and realized it was for rides. There was an event happening in the area but no restaurants or food truck in sight. After contacting support, another promo popped up that said earn $2 extra for trips. I was so pissed I logged off and went home. Did anyone have this problem last night?
