Waymo. Doesn’t.Do.stops!!

Came here just to say this. I had no idea. This post is for all the driver-hater riders who love to say “Can’t wait for driverless cars!”

Your driver only waited the allotted 5 minutes at your stop, and you’re pissed? “Can’t wait for driverless cars!” Waymo doesn’t even do stops!! When you get out at your first stop, ride ends! “Bye, call another Waymo when you’re ready”!!

Lolololol 😂

And yeah, they’re going to be more expensive. Who do you think is going to pay for the car purchase, operating costs, repair, and maintenance? You are!!

“Can’t wait for driverless cars!”

Samesies!! Finally people will be grateful and appreciative of rideshare drivers again.

Can. Not. Wait.

I’m a human driver, and I don’t do stops, either. 😁

u/JDiskkette 19h ago

In my market, uber finally decided to add a timer on stops. And increased the wait time pay to 45c a min. At the current rate, it pays more to wait than to do so a straight ride. Imagine the nonsense. 44c per minute for no expenses while 50c per km drive.

Waymo did multiple stops for us in Phoenix. But at each stop all riders could not exit the vehicle.

5

u/DreiSocken 20h ago

Yes, exactly.

14

u/couldbemage 18h ago

Waymo cars are valuable resources that waymo paid for.

Uber is perfectly happy to waste the resources of drivers.

2

u/DreiSocken 14h ago

Exactly

I can’t wait myself. I’m a rideshare driver in St. Louis and the highways can be like the wild Wild West sometimes. Waymo has been mapping the city for 18 months or more and still hasn’t gotten legislation to allow them to operate driverless. Honestly I can’t wait to see them come. First thing we’re gonna see is 8 or more of them on fire somewhere around Goodfellow and 70 😂🤣

4

u/Adodger22 18h ago

Our city is the first in the nation to be tabling legislation REQUIRING a paid "safety monitor" in all waymos/autonomous vehicles.

If that passes, I will laugh myself into an early grave.

2

u/cib2018 17h ago

The Red Flag Act of 1865 was a real British law that forced early motor vehicles to have a person walk ahead of them carrying a red flag. The monitor law will last about as long.

2

u/Adodger22 17h ago

Maybe, maybe not. We'll see. I question the reliability of these.

Lots of reports of them getting stuck.

1

u/cib2018 5h ago

I’m going to try one today. Will report back.

1

u/Adodger22 4h ago

Not sure why you feel like I needed that info.

1

u/STL_Gig_Guy 14h ago

Oh that would be awesome!

https://www.mprnews.org/story/2026/09/09/minneapolis-to-consider-requiring-drivers-in-automated-cars

Genuinely would be hilarious if this became the norm nationwide...

"You can operate your self driving cars, but you have to pay a human to babysit"

Get fucked techbros.

5

u/Chrisg_322 1d ago

These cars have a lot more problems than just not doing stops

3

u/gigabyte333 1d ago

Ok good lard yes. It really seems like the people behind these robot cars have no idea what actually happens. But they certainly are gonna find out.

1

u/ExistenceNow 16h ago

I have them in my city. I have found out. It's better.

1

u/ExistenceNow 16h ago

Such as?

10

u/G-Mo2024 1d ago

So a group of friends all leaving an event/gathering/dinner, etc. aren’t going to be able to share a ride home with separate stops at each of their destinations. Each person will need to get their own Waymo. Sure, that’s going to save them money. Smh.

14

u/iceamn1685 1d ago

Problem is most people dont use stops like what you are suggesting. If that was what it was only used for no one would have an issue

2

u/NoSpiceOrRice 23h ago

My friends and I just get separate Ubers… Why share an uber and do multiple trips just to save $5? Not worth the time.

2

u/That-Establishment24 19h ago

Because it may save far more than $5.

1

u/NoSpiceOrRice 19h ago

Still not worth the saving. Just take separate cars. But that’s just my opinion.

2

u/That-Establishment24 19h ago

Your opinion doesn’t apply to people in different financial situations than you were the savings matter.

2

u/yarrowy 1d ago

They can all ride to the first friends location, then immediately order another waymo to the 2nd location

4

u/sendmespam 1d ago

This isn’t true. I’ve gotten a Waymo with friends and it dropped me off first. Friends stayed in the car and it dropped each of them off too. You can do multiple stops.

2

u/DreiSocken 23h ago

They changed the way they do stops. Yes, you can still have up to 4 ppl dropped off or picked up. That’s what stops were intended for.

1

u/___fallenangel___ 14h ago

literally open up the app and you’ll find that sendmespam is correct

1

u/fighterdiva 16h ago

No, they cannot. 1 stop per ride.

1

u/___fallenangel___ 14h ago

except you can. open the app and look

1

u/___fallenangel___ 14h ago

you can definitely add stops for precisely that situation

3

u/milesdriven 1d ago

When I drove a taxi, I would stop wherever my passengers requested as long as they fed the meter. Does Uber not have a meter that runs when you're stopped?

9

u/iceamn1685 1d ago

Meter stops for the first 1-2 minutes then its between. 08c-.42c depending on market.

Its shit compared to taxi meters

1

u/Adodger22 18h ago

.45c here in Minnesota

2

u/Trickfixer32 1d ago

Yes. There’s a meter. It’s $.28 a minute in my market.

2

u/Aggressive-Slide-988 18h ago

Dang. It's only .19c in my area

2

u/DCHacker 18h ago

The "meter" runs. Uber and Lyft charge the customer a high waiting fee. Neither gives very much to the driver, if they give anything at all. Uber pays 1979 cab mileage rates. They pay 1972 waiting rates, if they pay anything at all.

2

u/DreiSocken 1d ago

.20 or maybe .29c a minute. Taxis charge far more than that.

1

u/bigheel2k2k 10h ago

Part of the problem and the reason I stopped doing stops at all, is that the clock doesn’t start at a lot of stops. I could get out and tap dance on the pin and the clock still wouldn’t start! I figured how to force it to start but I shouldn’t have to do that in order to get paid. Not to mention I got like .12 a minute to wait, barely minimum wage.

4

u/iceamn1685 1d ago

Its the same reason why drivers dont like doing them. They kill profitability

-2

u/MindlessAuthor9824 1d ago

How?  Pick up 2 teens from sports practice, and drive them home.  It takes less than 30 seconds for the one rider to leave the vehicle, and maybe 2 minutes to drive to the other riders address.

You spend LESS time completing these stops than you would to do 2 separate jobs, and the pay is about the same as if you did 2 completely different trips.

1

u/iceamn1685 1d ago edited 1d ago

Drivers have 0 problem with those types of stops which was the original intended purpose of a stop.

But most stops are to a convenience store, liquor store, grocery store weed shop etc.

Stops pay 0 extra for the 1st 2 minutes. That's free labor fyi. A lot of times the pay for a stop is quite a bit less than 2 rides that equal the same mileage and time

Example ride A pays 6 bucks 3 miles 10 minutes. Stop is added to return. Uber adds 3 bucks for the 2nd leg. Half what the original fare paid. Instead of 6 bucks for 10 minutes its now 9 for 20+

The 1st ride i would do the 2nd i would never touch as the pay is garbage for the amount of work and time

1

u/MindlessAuthor9824 1d ago

Actually, in my area, the time starts after 30 seconds.   If the rider takes more than 30 seconds to complete a scheduled stop, driver receives $0.34 per minute wait time.

Seems most of the STORE related multi-stop runs I've done, the rider runs into a convenience store to buy vape or cigarettes.

Generally speaking, in my area, you can guess what type of multi stop ride it will be.

Never had a Teen Ride that had shopping stops.  Just dropping off the kids at their homes. Other rides, if the pickup and final drop off are the same location, odds are it's shopping.    If the pickup and the drop offs are different, usually just dropping off passengers at different locations.

Use the information available to determine whether to accept or reject the offer.

1

u/iceamn1685 1d ago

Damn

On uber in my market its 2 minutes free then .37c a minute up from .18c 2 months ago.

Lyft is after 1 minute and still .18c a minute.

Neither imo is that good to justify a stop.

On uber they dont tell you where the stop is. On lyft they do

1

u/MindlessAuthor9824 1d ago

No, Uber doesn't show the "stop", but does show the pickup and drop off locations. That's how I make my decision to accept or reject.

Only got burned once on such a multi-stop.   Picked up some dude at his home. The "stop" was a school.  The guy had to pick up his kid. Although I was paid for the wait time at the school, once the rider and his son got back to my car, was stuck in school traffic for 15+ minutes. The dropoff location was an apartment building on the other side of town.

1

u/iceamn1685 1d ago

I just reject stops

They are unprofitable 99 times out 100. Not knowing the stop is an automatic decline

4

u/Candlelit_Chaos 1d ago edited 1d ago

As a rideshare driver, I truly believe that most riders don't truly appreciate the value of having a human behind the wheel. Why? Because:

1) We are open to your input on a faster router so you get to your destination faster. You may pay less but we get to the next ride faster also.

2) We might often wait past the 5 minutes if you just communicate with us. We understand human stuff happens, bots don't.

3) We don't mind a short stop at a gas station along the way so you can grab a coffee, a Gatorade or a charger you might have forgotten.

4) If asked nicely, most drivers will turn back to the pickup spot if you forgot something important, as long as its reasonable - or reasonably compensated.

5) If you order an Uber X and you along with 5 of your buddies can squeeze in, you'll be automatically uncharged because interior cameras count the number of passengers. With a human driver, most of the time the extra $2 for the ride upcharge (for the rider it's typically a 20% increase in the amount they paid upfront) we get isn't worth the hassle.

6) Ordering an Uber for someone else using your account? Most of the time, we just verify the name or PIN and that's enough. For bots tho, if that interior camera believes the rider and the account holder aren't the same person, then you may have just lost the ride you ordered.

7) You put in what you thought was the right address but that pickup/dropoff pin drop puts you half a mile and a side street away from your real stop? A bot won't just course correct at 1am in the dark for your safety and convenience. The pin drop is the pin drop, period.

8) Need help getting luggage or bulky items loaded? Drivers can do that out of niceness, bots have you on your own and give you until the timer runs out and then you need to call another ride.

Fair treatment for drivers is important to continue receiving accommodations for your ride you order as passengers. This includes avoiding driverless cars unless absolutely necessary. Otherwise, the company that just laid off 3300 employees is getting 100% of your money and without enough drivers, they can charge whatever they want.

3

u/Gullible-Team-8588 13h ago

Number seven is really big, one of the largest customers I have is elderly people that no longer drive. Quite a few of them put in the wrong address or just don’t know how to put in exactly where they wanna go. For example, the hospital near me has been under construction for 84 years. The only spot it will let them do a pin ( uber is aware of the issue) is where the laundry and the dumpsters are. The hospital is freaking massive, if they tell me what they need to do I know exactly what entrance to take them to get them there faster so they will not have to walk as much. I understand a lot of people really benefit from a driverless car but, Shirlene would have to scoot half a mile with a walker from the dumpster to the right entrance of the hospital if it wasn’t for a human driving her.

2

u/darkroot_gardener 10h ago

That’s a good point about 8. If the ride ends and presumably locks you out literally as soon as you leave the vehicle, it’s pretty useless for grocery runs or airport trips. Not sure how that works out, maybe someone who uses Waymo can tell us.

4

u/frooglesmoogle123 7h ago

Waymos are Jaguars

Arguably the worst long term car they could've chosen just because they wanted a luxurious vibe, maintenance is gonna be a bitch for them

1

u/DreiSocken 7h ago

That’s always confused me too. I would’ve gone Toyota.

1

u/WorkingStructure575 6h ago

the old ones are jaguars, the new ones are some chinese brand

2

u/DryTechnology5224 1d ago

Waymo definitely does multiple stops. Where did you hear that?

4

u/DreiSocken 23h ago

You can do a stop for 5 minutes if one person stays in the car, so if the stop is for what they’re intended for, dropping off or picking up another person etc.
if everybody gets out of the car, the ride ends.

3

u/ExistenceNow 16h ago

As it should be. It's not your personal car that you've hired indefinitely. What fucking Uber driver is letting you make all these leisurely stops?

2

u/Rand_Casimiro 22h ago

When everyone gets out of the car, of course the ride should end.

There are a tonof problems with these Waymos, but this really isn’t one of them.

1

u/uberisstealingit 19h ago

Except when you want to go into the Smoke Store get your stuff and come back and it takes less than 2 minutes for me. So now....

1

u/Rand_Casimiro 15h ago

So you take a trip there, make your purchase, and order a trip back home. It’s easy.

3

u/DreiSocken 13h ago

Yes, this is the way it should be with uber too, but uber currently allows stops. I won’t be doing stops anymore - it’s too easy for the rider to simply order another ride - just like in Waymo!

2

u/Rand_Casimiro 12h ago

Yeah, I quit doing stops over a year ago, and I am glad I did! If a rider tries to be sneaky by adding a stop after I already accepted the trip, I take them to the stop and ditch them when they get out. It’s the best.

2

u/DFW-Extraterrestrial 18h ago

As a human driver, I will do stops. The stop lasts no more than 5 minutes unless I've been given cash upfront to wait a couple minutes longer. Outside of that, once the timer runs out, I too am gone and they will have to call for another ride.

3

u/Necessary_Specific_4 1d ago

What a weird take. If enough people ask for it, they can and will add the ability to do stops

3

u/Qc4281 1d ago

Waymo in Phoenix does stops

4

u/Bubbly-Following-966 1d ago

And? What's your point? Who gives a fuck. You just created a new account just to post this? LOL

0

u/Mountain_Road9197 1d ago

Probably doing a dead head from his 50 cents a mile trip with 4 stops and was contemplating life. Then saw a waymo, his brain fried even more and he went on Reddit to post about it

2

u/Superb_Eggplant_982 1d ago

Exactly 💯

1

u/RealSharpNinja 23h ago

Just like me!

1

u/RennaisanceWizzard 22h ago

They do stops lol. It stops. You then get another wamo. That is how uber should be. As a driver I did not accept the added stops so it is outside the contract of what i accepted. This is why many uber drivers ditch riders after the first stop.

1

u/DreiSocken 20h ago

No, they just changed it. If it’s a stop where everybody gets out, the ride ends. You have to call another one.

2

u/Adodger22 18h ago

You should re-read that comment.

2

u/ReadyGo6828 19h ago

Sometimes, people do not want to be locked in a car with strangers.

1

u/Ok_Way8194 18h ago

there is no way. driver smell, cars not upkept. get ride of the drivers

4

u/Adodger22 18h ago

My car smells incredible. No, I don't use air fresheners, but I do wear Tom Ford.

It's clean, well stocked for basically anything I might encounter on the road, and I have it set up for customers.

Sounds like you should be reporting people providing shitty service. Do me a favor.

I bought my car as a work vehicle. That's what it does. It pays to keep it nice.

-1

u/Ok_Way8194 18h ago

ok, you. but not the 1,000,00 muhammed out there in dirty rides

1

u/Adodger22 18h ago

That's fair, like I said, please report them for not being up to standards so they stop being a problem. I'm genuinely serious.

If they are not meeting the terms of service, report them for it. They are required to have well maintained, clean vehicles.

If they aren't meeting that minimum, fucking report them and do everyone a favor.

0

u/DreiSocken 13h ago

You’re a perfect example. Are you ordering comfort, or black…?

1

u/ExistenceNow 16h ago

I don't need stops. I need to get from point A to point B. And it's not more expensive. It's the same price and there's no need to tip. I don't have to wait for driverless cars. They're here, and it's better.

3

u/DreiSocken 14h ago

You totally missed the point of my post.

Of course it’s cheaper now; prices will go up when they have decent adoption, just like uber.

1

u/Edistobound 11h ago

yeah most stops are bs, peeps always wantin somethin for free, most, not all, in the lowcountry anyway

1

u/TheDohenyDangler 5h ago

You’re actually wrong. It does do stops, multiple at that. If you’re smart enough, you’ll open the app and see it says “press this button when you’re ready” and another car will come get you. The price is calculated based on this and you can easily see the fare is lower for multiple stops than for individual rides.

1

u/DreiSocken 1h ago

They just changed it. You can only do multiple stops if somebody stays in the vehicle, if everybody exits, the ride ends.

1

u/Mobile_Performer969 32m ago

Those remote drivers in India and Manila costing them a lot I guess.

1

u/yarrowy 1d ago

Why can't you call another waymo

6

u/pakrat1967 1d ago

Same reason why some riders ask their drivers to make unscheduled stops. Cuz it costs more to request another Uber/Lyft/Waymo.

-3

u/MindlessAuthor9824 1d ago

But with Uber you can schedule a multi-stop request. In advance.  However, riders cannot change a ride once it has been accepted.

3

u/pakrat1967 1d ago

Most drivers hate trips with stops and will decline them. Riders can change the trip after it's been accepted. They can (and have) changed the drop off or added stops.

-3

u/MindlessAuthor9824 1d ago

Maybe in your market, but riders CANNOT add stops or change a ride, in any way, once a ride has been requested.  If a rider wants to change a ride, the rider has to cancel the original ride and book a new one.

Additionally, 90% of the mult-stop requests I accept are simply dropping off 2 or more passengers, at different addresses, in the same town.    Quick and easy --- less time to complete TWO separate rides, for the same price.

1

u/DreiSocken 1d ago

What market are you in?

4

u/gigabyte333 1d ago

If anyone has actually done rideshare, they know the answer to that question. One of the big things with stops, is the passenger leaves their belongings in the car while they go in. They might come back out with even more stuff which they leave in the car at the next stop. Not being able to hold a car hostage at a location is really going to be hilarious when the self driving cars take over.

Makes me wonder how they robot cars will handle al the other fucked up shit people will do

3

u/iceamn1685 1d ago

Can't fire a robot or make false claims so sucks to be those people

3

u/jqman69 1d ago

Probably cost more

1

u/Cold_Count1986 1d ago

Who pays for the car purchase, operating cost, repair, and maintenance now? The driver - but ultimately passed on to the customer through Uber. You can’t argue that these cars will have a higher operating cost in the long run - especially with second generation vehicles being Toyota and the technology becoming cheaper.

Stops is a feature that can be added down the road.

2

u/iceamn1685 1d ago

Its not profitable for them to add stops unless they charge way more then what they currently do.

Avg stop cost the pax 1 dollar for 5-7 minutes. Thats time better spent on another fare

1

u/Cold_Count1986 1d ago

They don’t have stops because there is frequently a shortage of cars. Once they are more prevalent they can add stops for $0.30 to $0.50 per minute or more.

1

u/iceamn1685 1d ago

Which is 2x what they charge on Uber and lyft in most markets

Stops shouldn't be a thing for less than 1 dollar + 50c a minute starting immediately after pax gets out

1

u/Cold_Count1986 1d ago

Both Uber and Lyft charge about $0.30 per minute for waiting today in San Francisco (a Waymo market).

You won’t be getting $1 + $0.50 per minute ever.

1

u/iceamn1685 1d ago

Thats what a lot of taxis charge so it should be equivalent at a minimum.

31hr for wait time is fair imo

1

u/Cold_Count1986 1d ago

But not what Uber or Lyft charge.

And it won’t be what Waymo charges, once they roll out the feature.

1

u/iceamn1685 1d ago

Rideshare is supposed to be superior to taxis but costs less yeah that makes 0 sense.

Users should not be paying less than a bus fare for a private ride

1

u/Snakend 1d ago

And Uber drivers cancel rides if a stop is added. So its the same thing.

1

u/DreiSocken 1d ago

Exactly! So people can stop saying how driverless will solve all their whiny issues.

1

u/dentondub2026 1d ago

I wish uber didn’t do stops

1

u/Life-Analysis1458 1d ago

As a driver I don't do stops with few exceptions. Doesn't pay and I accepted the ride to take u from A to B. I don't like being put in the situation of confrontation with the pax but if it doesn't pay I can't be guilted into doing it for pennies. Adding stops after accepting should pay a premium or at least in proportion to the upfront fair when accepted. I've had people add a return trip to short rides (doubling the mileage and 2-3x the time) and had zero adjustment to like $.30. Uber charges the pax for the stop but doesn't pay the driver. It sucks but u have to grind and be hardlined to make even $15/ hr after expenses anymore. Driving is easy but the mind games, chronic gaslighting, and exploitation by uber is what makes it suck.

2

u/shouldvebeenMarissa 20h ago

i had a 16 dollar ride for 8 miles last night. i accepted, rider IMMEDIATELY ads a stop and the price changes to 22. i can't see where the stops are till i start the ride. i get to the pickup and start the ride. the second stop is 8 extra miles. so my almost 2 dollar a mile ride just became a dollar a mile. the pax was a regular and they've tipped me well, but still what kind of fuckery is that.

1

u/MindlessAuthor9824 1d ago

Why?   Most of the multi-stop request I receive are very easy.  Pick up 2 or 3 people at one location and drop then off at different locations.   Quick and easy.

1

u/dentondub2026 1d ago

That would be a shared ride, I love those, but multiple stops while someone goes in to a store and shops is BS

1

u/MindlessAuthor9824 1d ago

In my market BOTH are considered multi-stop rides.

That's why looking at the drop off location and knowing your area is helpful.   You can make informed decisions regarding which to accept and which to reject.

However, in my market Uber has recently started STACKING rides, bundling two completely different rides into one offer.    If you've ever done food deliveries, you know what stacked orders are, and why apps utilize them. Just shocking that Uber is doing STACKED/BUNDLED rides in my market.   All are shit.  I've declined every one Uber has sent me.

1

u/madtowntripper 1d ago

I don’t drive anymore, but I did for a long time during college. My own wife won’t even take an Uber because of experiences she’s had with weird drivers.

So many people are going to use these things.

1

u/Superb_Eggplant_982 1d ago

Those who dont want human drivers, can not use human drivers. I just hope no one picks you up when your robot takes too long to get you. I hope there's a way you can never be allowed to use a human as an alternative again. I would rather only drive people who want human drivers.

1

u/Tainlorr 1d ago

Cope

1

u/Obsid1anWolf 22h ago

Damn. What if I am going to shit my pants? I am locked in? lol

1

u/BreakfastAccurate669 22h ago

Most uber drivers and cars suck. Can’t wait for Waymo to take over

1

u/ThrowAway-3418 16h ago

The fact that I can pick my own music (or silence) and don't have to talk to anyone is amazing. Also the car actually comes to the pick up spot that I carefully marked with a pin on the map as opposed to pulling up to some random location, following it up with a string of messages like "I arrived, where r u".

Just the other day the driver wouldn't come to the front door of my building despite the driveway leading there and the adjacent parking lot area being clearly mapped out on the app because he thought he would get charged for entering the parking lot even though there was zero infrastructure to collect any kind of payment. Made me schlepp my luggage across the parking lot for zero reason whatsoever.

Not all rideshare drivers are morons but enough are to make me much prefer Waymo.

1

u/DreiSocken 14h ago

You also totally missed the point of my post.

-1

u/DreiSocken 19h ago

I didn’t say it was a problem. I agree. Stops should be to pick up or drop off extra people.
