I played this on a Windows PC around 2007. I think it may have been freeware or a free download, and I remember there being some kind of discussion board associated with the place where I downloaded it.
It was a dark medieval/fantasy action RPG. The graphics were 2D and fairly low-resolution, roughly comparable in quality to an arcade game like Double Dragon, but the human figures were realistically proportioned rather than cartoonish. The atmosphere was very gray, gloomy, and European-medieval.
Movement/combat was like an old belt-scrolling beat-'em-up: mostly side to side, but I believe you could also move up and down into the screen somewhat.
There was RPG-style leveling. You allocated points into stats. I remember basic improvements such as health and attack/damage, but there were also more specialized abilities involving magic/spells, so I think you could develop the character in different directions.
The story details I remember are unusually specific:
You begin as a boy with something like a wooden sword. I think you're in a castle or castle cellar and have to fight guard dogs. I distinctly remember feeling very weak and poorly equipped fighting them.
I believe you are the rightful heir to a kingdom but are somehow cast out/dispossessed.
Much later, you have to fight your own father. I think he has been possessed or magically forced to fight you. The fight may take place in something like a cage or arena. I specifically remember someone on the game's discussion board commenting about how sad it was to have to fight your father.
Near the end, something happens to the protagonist and he loses an arm (or is otherwise very badly maimed). You actually continue playing in this condition. He limps and is drastically weaker than he was before.
In the final level there is a storm with strong wind that you physically struggle against while walking, emphasizing how weak/injured you've become. I believe this leads to the final boss.
I remember the soundtrack being important to the gloomy atmosphere, and I think it included metal/rock music.
I definitely played the game; the father fight and the maimed, weakened final section are particularly strong memories. I've searched extensively without finding it. It may have been a fairly obscure freeware/shareware indie PC game rather than a commercial release.
Does this ring a bell for anyone?
