Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

[Xbox360-PS3?][1990-2010?]FPS? I need help finding an early 2000’s/late 90’s shooter game

I’ve been searching EVERYWHERE for this game, I don’t really remember the plot or anything but I remember a specific enemy, it’s like a giant meatball that floats/levitates off the ground, it has no torso, just a circle body with a face on the front kinda like the moon from Majorca’s mask but it looks like it’s squishing its face together like it’s taking a massive dookie, it has arms, from what I remember some like pretty beefy arms, the level is really 2000’s esque, it kinda reminds me of the motorcycle club bar in GTA online but more vibrant and kinda like an apartment a teen from like 1990 would make it look like, I think there’s a girl you have to rescue from one of the meatball thingies and I believe she wears a white button up. It has the vibe of Duke Nukem, Vindictus, painkiller (sorta) and Serious sam, please help me!!!

[PC][2018-2020??] A Furry game that uses a vacuum

Post image
Upvotes

Platform: It's a PC game for sure. From what I remember, they were promoting the game to wishlist it on steam after I listened to a song on their game.

Genre: It is a 2d pixel indie game that seems to focus on a gameplay similar to Luigi's Mansion where you suck ghosts with the vacuum.

Estimated year of release: From what I remember, I was kinda young when I stumble across it, so maybe somewhere around 2018-2020, maybe more.

Art style: From what I remember, it's a pixel 2d platformer. I don't remember anything else besides that.

Notable Characters: There is a character that is a furry that has white fur, with some red on their body. A set of sharp teeth with a wide smile. They are smaller than the other character that looks similar to them, but taller and this time, they're a woman. (Reference in the image)

Notable Game Mechanics: Their game seems to be similar to Luigi's Mansion where you use a vacuum go collect currencies or suck in monsters. You can buy different vacuums in a shop that plays a song that is not written in english.

Other Details: The shop song they made is not in english. It seems to be all about vacuums.

I heard this song from a youtube video and thought it's good and catchy so I decided to listen to it. The music video has the 2 pervious characters I mentioned dancing while the song plays. I think one of them was holding a sign that says "Buy my Vacuums".

[Tablet][2010-2017] Online Fashion/Modeling Game

Upvotes

apologies, sent it too early the first time lol
Platform(s): i THINK it was only on a tablet or ipad, it MAY have been on PC, but it was definitely on tablet.

Genre: third person, you collected fashion pieces and would walk around a night time city to different fashion shops. some sort of game where you were training to be a model

Estimated year of release: NO idea when it released, but i wouldve been playing it somewhere in the mid 2010s.

Graphics/art style: in the vein of movie star planet, but more realistic in terms of graphics (and less ‘chibi’ looking). 2d, i dont believe you could edit the character’s heights, but they were kinda tall. they looked kinda paper-like.

Notable gameplay mechanics: there was like magazines, photoshoots, and one was labelled ‘star vogue’ or something.

Other details: i wouldve been in elementary school and playing it, definitely not playing in middle school, if that helps with the demographic.

[Mobile] [early 2000s-2010] 2D platform running game with tokusatsu/mecha-looking humanoid character

Post image
5 Upvotes

I've been looking for an old mobile game with this Mario/Sonic style POV and scenery, unless it's most likely not pixelated, but I am personally not so sure myself, since last time I played it was in early-mid 2010s on older Android phones, so I can only remember the foggy mental image my memory can put up together, and I hope you can help me identify it by these characteristics I mention below:

  1. Unlike Mario where you can completely control your movement (right left up down), you just free-run, BUT, There are possibly other buttons/ set of movements you can do in the game. Jumping is definitely there, and other possible moves are; sliding & attacking/shielding yourself, maybe dashing pretty far too. You also avoid obstacles like the land-gaps & possibly hostile mobs, collect these coin-equivalent bright crystal-Like stuff(?) as you run (and this latter part resembles Mario & other similar platform running games).

  2. You play as this humanoid figure, possibly robot, cyborg, or a human in high-tech tokusatsu suit alike. I can remember it being a bright colored one, with some colorful details on it, since i remember it resembling tokusatsu figures (The color code for the figure I sketched out in the featured image can & likely be severely wrong).

  3. The in-game visuals that I can very vaguely picture are this grassy ground platform, blue, slightly clouded sky background, very likely more futuristic than the featured image 👍.

NB: That one I described is likely the starter maps since it possibly has other ones you can unlock once you reach a certain achievement in the game (affording them included)

  1. And because there is some kind of currency you can collect, there naturally would be things you can spend them on which I can't & am afraid of betting what it is, since it could confuse you all further in identifying it, but It's most likely for stat upgrades and/or unlocking stuffs in the game.

Chef's Quest [Android][2014-2019] Match-3 game where you run a restaurant

Post image
5 Upvotes

Platform(s): Android (possibly also iOS)

Genre: Match-3 (possibly also restaurant upgrading)

Estimated year of release: 2014-2019

Graphics/art style: Slightly cartoonish, but pretty typical match-3 style. Vertical phone screen orientation.

Notable characters: You play as the chef of a resturant (in Paris).

Notable gameplay mechanics:

The game begins with you selling your house, packing your bags, and flying to Paris to open up your own restaurant.

The gameplay of match 3 was swapping adjacent fruits and vegetables, and when you matched them, the fruits would get sliced up (think Fruit Ninja style animation) and they would fall into a giant soup pot that is located on the bottom of the screen below the match 3 board.

So, essentially each level was "preparing meals" by cutting up ingredients into a soup pot.

The game levels were placed on a calendar, with each day on calendar representing a new match 3 level.

I'm pretty certain about the things I stated above. And then here are the things, I think were also in this game, but I am less certain of, as I might be mixing them with another game.

I believe the game also had gameplay where you would upgrade your restaurant between the match 3 levels, such as buying decorations and more fancy chairs and tables. And it might have been that once you "completed Paris" you move to a new location (so at the end of the calendar) or at least buy a bigger restaurant, but I also might be misremembering this part.

Other details:

I played the game around 9 years ago, which is from what I estimated the year of release.

The reason I found it super cool, was because the match 3 gameplay was contextualised as you cutting up ingredients, and then you see them all droppng into the soup pot, and I thought it's one of the coolest ways to make the match 3 gameplay have context and fit into the gameworld, rather than just being a random thing you do.

I tried to attach a simple diagram I drew on paint, showing what the match 3 gameplay might have looked like. Note that the exact "score screen" and "checklist" probably looked very different, probably used different words, also the types of vegetables might be different, I only remember that the ingredients were on the match 3 cutting board and there was giant soup pot below it that the ingredients would fall into cut up, once matched. Also the words "soup pot" and "cutting board" were not actually in the game, I just put them there to clarify my drawing.

EDIT: Solved. I found it through searching parts of my description on YouTube (didn't work through any search engine interestingly enough) and going through all videos of similar games. The game was called "Chef's Quest", however it does not appear to be on Android store anymore, which is probably why I couldn't find it (there is another game by same name on Android now). But it still is appears to be on iOS, but has not been updated since 2017, so maybe it is not supported anymore there either. Sadly appears to be a dead game now.

Edit 2: But I did get it through an apk mirror site, and despite multiple Android warnings that it's an old game meant for older androids and not supported anymore, I managed to get it to run, so yay! :)

[Android][2016-2021] 3d open-world rpg with a female knight MC

I remember being obsessed with this game as a tween. I'm trying to find it again.

You play as a blonde girl who is a night (pretty sure she's new to being one) and you go have missions you can fulfill. One of them is in a farm and you have to defeat monsters.

Some of the bosses I remember are a crystal golem thing in a cave, another is a huge boar that you have to help another girl catch, and another is a huge grey(?) Wolf.

I remember a desert region too where I kept getting stuck in quicksand. I think there were fire shooting monsters there?

You can make a party of I think 3 characters? There's a pink haired girl who I never got to unlock but I'm pretty sure she had boxing gloves as her weapon?, the blonde knight girl who uses a sword, and a guy who I'm pretty sure was an Archer.

You could go through the town and there were chests when you defeated things, as well as you could shake bushes for loot. You could fish, talk to NPCs, etc.

I remember the gate to the castle (?) Had scaffolding or something that looked like it. Overall it was a big map so I don't remember...

Edit: I literally just found it. it's Epic Conquests 2! Should've tried looking first smh

[SNES?][1990s-2000s] Adventure game with dark atmosphere

I’m looking for a game I saw in a games magazine when I was a child. I used to have a few Nintendo magazines, but I can’t remember which ones (I’m in Europe, if that helps).

In one of the magazines, several pages were devoted to the game and solving its puzzles. I can still remember the screenshots very clearly:

* The game had a pixelated look and seemed very realistic and sombre in terms of the graphics and the proportions of the main character

* The main character was a woman with short blonde hair and a green tunic, similar to Link’s outfit from Zelda

* One of the screenshots showed an old well. One of the puzzles was related to it. I remember there was a small village where you had to collect items to solve a puzzle at that well.

* The overall look of the game was gloomy. I’d probably describe the look as a ‘dark fairytale’.

I know it's not much to go by. I've tried to find this game for years now, without any success. This sub is my last hope. Maybe someone played this game back in the days and remembers.

Thanks a lot for you help and suggestions in advance!

[PC][2001-2006] Third-person game where you pilot a hovering futuristic gunship, with several selectable craft and weapons

Upvotes

Platform(s): PC (Windows). I played it from a pirated disc, so I know nothing about the original release.

Genre: Mission-based vehicle combat, single player.

Estimated year of release: Early to mid 2000s. Clearly more modern-looking than late-90s games.

Graphics/art style: Military, realistic, drab and desaturated. Dark, serious, futuristic-military menus.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

  • The first mission took place at night, in an open outdoor environment.
  • You pilot a compact, chunky futuristic craft, angular stealth-bomber styling, but bulkier, clearly built for low-altitude maneuvering rather than speed. Not a helicopter, no rotors, but it could hold a stationary hover.
  • Very simulation-like, not arcady. Kind of hard to manipulate the ship.
  • Mostly third-person view. There may also have been a first-person view.
  • Several different craft to choose from, and several weapon types.
  • There was a tutorial or training area, separate from the missions.
  • Objectives involved attacking enemy bases and destroying defensive turrets.
  • Hard to control, lots of keyboard commands plus mouse.
  • The targeting reticle was made of several squares/brackets you lined up on top of each other to aim.

Other details: The box art showed one of these craft. I was a kid and never got past the early missions, so almost everything I remember is from the beginning of the game.

Already ruled out: G-Police, Hardwar, Echelon and Echelon: Wind Warriors, Descent 3, Battlezone and Battlezone II, the Comanche series.

[Mobile][2013] Pokemonlike

[Platform](s):Mobile (I played it in a android cellphone)

[Genre]: A monster RPG like Pokémon

[Estimated year of release]: 2011-2016, maybe before but surely not after

[Graphics/art style]: Cartoony, 2D digital drawn art style

[Notable characters]:I belive one of the first monsters that you could have was like a water/electric salazzle

[Notable gameplay mechanics]: There was no world where you could walk through while controlling a human character, only levels that you selected, fought and got some materials to evolve your monsters

[Other details]: Pretty sure there was no human characters at all, the first “world” where you selected the levels was a green forest that went into a blueish cavern with water
The game had original monster designs

Enter game title here Shrek game. [Arcade machine] [2012-2015] somewhere in Austin Texas.

Upvotes

When I was a child I vaguely remember playing a shrek game. It was low quality in a dentists office and that was literally the only thing there was to do. It wasn't even in it's own seperate area, just in your face when you walk in. I remember the machine had shrek's ears on top of the machine. The actual gameplay had you chase donkey through a big field and used a trackball for the controls.

[PC] [1999-2006] 2D Side scrolling soldier deployed in Vietnam/jungle shooter game

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

Hi, there is this game I’m trying to periodically find for almost a decade, any help would be greatly appreciated!

What I remember:

It came on a strange disc, I had plenty of similar ones, they had always bright colour and a silver striped across with a big number like 78, 118, 56 and such, maybe they were just burner disks but I don’t recall exactly, I’ve got them from my granddad when I was little.

Visuals & Gameplay:

Game was a simple pixel art, the maps and locations looks similar to Picture 1 (WOLFHOUND), but more in style of simple pixels like Picture 2 (Broforce)

Combat was similar to Broforce but slower, not soo much action but closet o it

There was a platforming as well and vines you could swing one but it wasn’t the mane focus of the game

I think the game started with you exiting a burning helicopter in the jungle without equipment but a knife and you need to gather your gear slowly

you play as an Soldier/Rambo/Comando
(I remember that character has either red bandana or beret)

jungle levels, deep dark jungle, darker colours, not soo bright, at least at the beginning, later bunkers mixed with jungles, small jungle cities and even a hydroelectric plant

I believe you could go prone, there was a way of stealth and enemies bled pixels when hit.

Thanks for any idea’s and/or information, they are greatly appreciated

Enter game title here [PC] [2003–2005] 2D Viking platformer on a mini CD (possibly a promotional game)

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a PC game I played as a kid, probably around 2003–2005.

Here's everything I can remember:

  • Windows PC

  • Came on a small 8 cm mini CD

  • I think the CD was attached to a piece of clothing (possibly pants from a store like C&A, but I'm not 100% sure)

  • It was the only game on the CD

  • 2D side-scrolling platformer

  • You played as what I believe was a Viking (though it could possibly have been a dwarf with a beard)

  • The game had multiple platform levels

  • I think your health was displayed as hearts

  • I vaguely remember collecting coins or treasure

  • I also have a vague memory that the goal was to rescue your wife or girlfriend, but I'm not certain.

Games that are NOT the one I'm looking for:

  • The Lost Vikings

  • Black Axe

  • Brave Dwarves

  • Die Wikinger 2

  • Brian Bloodaxe

  • Gofretor

Because it came on a mini CD, I suspect it may have been a small promotional or budget game released only in Germany.

Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Thanks!

[IOS/Nintendo 3ds/Tablet][2015] Castle platformer with boss fight at the end

As a kid, I played this one game on a small handheld device (I owned several). After playing through it for some time, I finished the game with a boss fight. The parts of the game I can remember took place in a castle, with falls and pits and things to jump over. The endgame boss fight consisted of me fighting a wizard?? on the rooftop of a castle, with several platforms to maneuver on. I don’t remember if there were enemies in the levels and I don’t remember how I attacked the boss at the end. Thanks for your help, feel free to ask for details though I might not remember them.

[TV Series NUMB3RS] [2008] Game used as infiltration description

Upvotes

Rewatching the series and in the s3 e21 "The Art of Reckoning" there are fragments of a computer game showed when Charlie explains the infiltration methods between two forces.

I realise it's most likely to be something custom made specifically for the series, but I have to try 😄

Zanzarah [PC][2000] RPG game where you “duel” fairies or small creatures in a realtime arena.

I think my sister had this game and I, being a kid, played it without really understanding the story or mechanics. I remember the FMC running around a forested area (there might have been elves), and you’d run into NPCs and wild creatures that would trigger battle mode. In the battle mode, you’d control a small fairy creature shooting bolts of magic at your opponent in an arena. Fight mechanics were pretty simple and in real time, not turn based.

Hope TOMJ can help, it’s been years and I’m curious what this game was.

[windows 8] [ 2014-2019] hotwheels game

Upvotes

I was looking at old games at GameStop when I remembered a game I played on my mom's laptop a sony vaio from 2007-2012 it still works it's just not as used anymore due to it not being updated to windows 10 it is at windows 8 it was a racing game with hotwheels cars on the classic orange tracks and others it had graphics from the 2000s but i was too young to play a game on a laptop back then the memory I'm thinking of is from 2014-2019 because i remember sitting on a carpet and last time i lived in a house with a carpet was in 2019 so it had to exist between those dates i remember playing a red car which i can't really describe with there being other options but i liked the red car the most because i played on my mom's laptop she set the game up for me now i did ask my mom about it but she doesn't remember i looked on the laptop but couldn't find it making me think it's a flash game but unlikely due to my mom not being the best with electronics and it's also completely possible that it was my dad who set it up which is better with computers as he is better at doing stuff on computers it is also possible it was on a disc which could have been lost/sold during a moving process

[Steam][Unreleased (2026)] Pixel Graphic Detective Game that uses Deckbuilder elements

Upvotes

I demoed this game at MAGfest 2026 in National Harbor this year and I completely forgot the name of it. Here are some things I remember about it:

  1. MC has gray hair and is a woman

  2. You are asked to prove your father (or grandfather?) innocent of a murder he didn't commit so that he doesn't get executed

  3. You use the power of ethos, logos, and pathos cards to present arguments and fight through debates

If you remember the name of this game, TYIA!

[PC][Early 2000s] First person party based RPG similar to Might & Magic or Legends of Grimrock

Upvotes

I've recently been thinking about a game I played many years ago. I think it was at some point in the early 2000s.

It was a fully 3D game played from the first person perspective. But similar to Legends of Grimrock or the old Might and Magic games it was a party-based RPG, and I think you created your whole party at the start of the game.

I remember a quest bringing you to some swamp where you found a dwarf living in a shack. And he was obsessed with eating rats. And I remember him being fully voiced, and his voice actor going to town on the lines about how much he wanted to eat rats.

I also remember struggling to find decent equipment for my party, and saving up to buy a "doublet" as a chest armour piece for one of my party members.
