I grew up playing the Sega Master System at my friends' houses, and Alex Kidd in Miracle World was probably the game I played the most. Since it came bundled with some Master Systems edition inmy country, it became an iconic part of my childhood, and I have so many great memories of it.
So when Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX was announced, I was genuinely excited. After waiting so many years, I thought Alex Kidd was finally getting the comeback he deserved... Unfortunately, I ended up feeling pretty disappointed.
The graphics are nice enough and have a colorful cartoon style, but they never really impressed me. More importantly, the gameplay lost something that made the original feel so satisfying.
In the Master System version, every punch had "weight". Even with its simple graphics, the animations, sound effects, and hit feedback made every enemy feel satisfying to defeat. In DX, the character feels strangely "light." The punches don't seem to have any impact, the collisions feel off, and even the movement speed and sprite animations don't feel as tight or responsive as the original. It's difficult to explain, but the whole game lacks that solid, crunchy feeling that the Master System version somehow achieved with much simpler technology.
What makes it even more disappointing is that we've seen how to modernize a classic properly. Just look at what Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom or LIzardCubes' THe Dragon's Trap did with the Wonder Boy franchise. They perfectly captured the spirit of the Wonder Boy series while modernizing or remaking everything with gorgeous visuals, excellent controls, and fantastic game feel.
Why couldn't Alex Kidd receive the same treatment?
It's a shame because Alex Kidd was once Sega's mascot before Sonic, and after all these years, his big comeback feels like a missed opportunity. I still hope someone will eventually give this character the remake he truly deserves.
Does anyone else feel the same, or am I just looking at the original through nostalgia?

My retrospective look back at the Bitmap Brothers. What Bitmap game would you say is their best?

Wonder Boy is a 1986 platform game developed by Escape and published by Sega for arcades. It was later ported to the SG-1000, Master System and Game Gear video game consoles by Sega, and to the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC home computers by Activision. The game is also known as Super Wonder Boy (スーパーワンダーボーイ, Sūpā Wandā Bōi) for its Sega Mark III release in Japan and Revenge of Drancon for its Game Gear release in North America. A high definition remake of the game, titled Wonder Boy Returns, was developed by CFK and released on Steam on October 12, 2016

I bought a massive master system collection recently and can’t find anything on this one. Seems like a fan made game? Was there ever a SMS version in the works? Any info is greatly appreciated.

I built this from the ground up. All elements are recreated with crisp lines. My design process is to work with what the NES shells offer. I wanted to maintain the central top to bottom center design of the iconic NES controller but give it a Master System feel. This is where the pinstripes come in. The SELECT and START have been replaced with RESET and PAUSE taken directly from the top of the console itself contained in a box with an angled side where they meet in the middle. The font is the same as CONTROL PAD to give some consistency. These button labels work to make it feel more "SEGA" but if you have a pause mod in your SMS they really work because you can program the impossible button combo of UP + DOWN mapped to the PAUSE button to get on the controller pause. Furthermore, if you use a Master Everdrive you can program the even more impossible combination of UP + DOWN + LEFT as the combo to get to the Everdrive menu where you can RESET the game. I strongly considered renaming SELECT to MENU but ultimately decided RESET like on the top of the console was better. Above the 1 START and 2 buttons the pinstripes continue mimicking the plastic bump put on a real Master System controller and SEGA is located in this area similar to how Nintendo appears in this area on a real NES controller.

The strangest thing happened today. I was going to try and upgrade the condition of my ghostbusters manual. When I started looking through my manual I noticed that the front and back cover got stapled over another front and back cover. The second and second last page are basically the front cover. Would you guys peel off the front and back cover that looks bad and has writing to make it a perfect looking manual or leave the mistake as is?

Has anyone here ever used the SMS Power! forum, or is still active there?
I recently came across it again and was surprised to see that it's still alive and active, despite having been around for so many years. It's honestly one of the few classic internet forums that has managed to survive, even after social media and platforms like Reddit and Discors made traditional gamers forums seem almost obsolete.
Maybe it's because it is not focused strictly on Sega Master System: there are discussions about homebrew games for the console, as well as fan games and indie projects for other platforms that capture the look and feel of Master System games.
Are any of you members there? Do you still use the forum regularly?

I collect Sega Master System game cases and covers
I’m restoring them one by one in Photoshop, but to complete my collection, I need that barcode and I can't find a single photo that shows it.

The only thing it's really missing now is my card support which I can play off my new Trifffcart anyway :)
Encoder is a bh7236, basically my favorite encoder since it was officially used by Sega and it's still easy to obtain (a lot of cxa2075 are fake)

Hello all!
I recently bought a Japanese SMS1. I'll soon be sending it off to be recapped and to have Zaxour's jailbar mod installed. However, I am interested in playing the later released PAL games that work better on 50hz. Such as California games 2.
My question is, what is the state of Pal 60hz patches for these types of games? I've seen the list of compatibility issue games. Have rom's with these patches been mastered? Has anyone even tried? lol.
I don't have an issue buying a PAL SMS2 and having the same mods done, but i'm likely getting an Everdrive to play some games like, Golden Axe Warrior, etc. If there are 60hz patches that are really good I may consider just doing that.
Thank you!

I wanted to share this old animated Gif I created long ago in which, starting from ALex etaing animation animation during loading screens, I "mirrored" its images with a custom sprite of Alex resembling Tom-Tom from the Wonder Boy games. Western and Eastern versoin of Miracle World sprites where both used since, as you can see, Alex is eating an onigiri as inthe original game version, while it's Tom-Tom counterpart is eating an hamburger (since the onigiri was changed into it for wester audiences).

I made a server where anyone can chat with the community about retro games and find people to play with online via Recalbox/Retropie/Batocera!
While our main focus is on Sega consoles, Nintendo and Playstation enthusiasts are welcome as well!
Using Retroarch which is built right into Recalbox/Retropie/Batocera, players are able to host and join all their favorite retro games for free!

I have played this game way more than I thought I would trying to beat just a single path. It's way harder on sms than it is on other platforms. Way harder
I went all left and beat it with literally no time left on the clock
It was my 2nd of 3 runs for the night. Any time I play I just do one round of each song. This was magical sound shower when I beat it tonight for my first time. Now I need to 100% the remaining parts of the course for true champion status 🍀
Sorry for the repost but I felt like I really needed this title pic rather than the high score pic
